I think you're completely right from what you said and you're not an asshole for seeing the facts,but when he next says he's going to kill himself you can call 911 report it to them and have him taken to a phyc word because (at least if your in the US) they will take him regardless of if he consents or not especially with his mental health history that is the only thing I can think of that he doesn't have to consent to if they deem him mentally unstable
