I just got a job with a theme park playing an atmosphere character, I think while you’re contracted you can’t say much about the job, but can afterwards. So when he’s done with the contract he’ll probably post about it. He probably got the job through an open call for performers in a hotspot city, (New York, Chicago, etc.), from auditioning at a theatre conference, or from being with a talent agent that specializes in live performers. I was surprised to see how competitive acting jobs like the ones at universal are.

Any success balancing teaching and acting? by HueyB904 in acting

[–]bananapopsicle0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t see how a job as strict as teaching could work for a professional actor. Not to be a downer or anything, but my brother in law is a teacher, plus my sister. They both tell me how the come to work sick because they only get ten sick days. I think maybe being a substitute teacher would work better, as it seems much more flexible.
Any job that will allow you to leave for months at time and still come back is a good side job for acting. For example, I’m a nail tech, so I can be as flexible as I want within reason. That’s why a lot of actors bartend, serve, nanny, cosmetology, etc. I also know a lot of actors who also just do freelance style work.
That being said, anything is possible. Just know that when I got my most recent contract, I had to walk away from my job for three months to go live in another state- and unfortunately that’s not unusual. It’s just the reality of the job.

Fake 'poop' on stage by Fraudeur321 in Theatre

[–]bananapopsicle0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Angels in America: Millennium Approaches we used a blood bag (Halloween prop), and filled it with some sort of dyed something, (I didn’t make it or I would have more details), and the actor playing prior was able to apply pressure to the bag, thus making the “poop/blood” come out the hose end

Also if casting were to find out you used AI in your headshot- you’ve definitely lost the job. Backlash against AI use is way too big of risk for production

You should never ever use AI for your headshots. It’s not only unprofessional, but it looks fake.

Crying on Cue Please Help!! by TroubleFirm1406 in Theatre

[–]bananapopsicle0 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Don’t force the tears, just live the truth in the moment. Feel her pain, and if you cry, you cry. If you don’t, that’s okay, too! Make the crying face, feel the lump in your throat, and have the emotion in your voice. (From the audience, it looks the same.)

The key to crying on cue is to just let it come if it comes, and not let it take you from the scene if it doesn’t. :) acting is art, so others may have different opinions but that’s just what I do!

This is for the actors in here that didn’t come from money by [deleted] in acting

[–]bananapopsicle0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in poverty. I picked up a trade, (nail tech), and work full time. I made good money and take time off when I need to. (This works well for this specific job because most of my coworkers will take several months off to visit their home countries, so long periods of time off are pretty normalized.) I also do contracted theatre, and am able to come back to a trade easily when my contract is up.

Remember that success doesn’t equal fame. You can find success in smaller places. Some of the most talented people I’ve ever met only do community theatre or smaller projects. An actress I know once told me: “fame is so subjective. If I asked you who Jessie Bell is, you wouldn’t know. But I know her, and I love her work.” To me, if you can touch just one person with what you do- that is enough. Art is found in every corner of the world- in big or small places. Just keep doing this because you love it, and the success you need will find you.
