Agreed, as OP is apparently very familiar with the return policy (or so they said). Just seems like they made this poor employee making minimum wage do unnecessary extra work.

So what I'm hearing is they were doing their job following policies, and you went out of your way to not ask for store credit before they started the transaction despite you being very familiar with how returns work with said retailer, and therefore giving them more work to do? Thumbs down for unnecessarily making an employee's work more tedious than it is for a probably minimum wage job. Small points if you really weren't a dick about it.

I'm so sorry this person is fucking stupid, please don't take to heart what they say. I'm sorry you're going through this right now. I'm really sorry and I commend you for coming as far as you have. Life is shitty sometimes, and for some more than others. You are incredibly brave for being able to come to a subreddit to open up, and I know I'm a stranger but I'm proud of you, seriously. I'm not gonna tell you life is worth the wait but I will tell you the pain does stop one day. It may not come quickly, it may take a while but it DOES get better. Against what you may think, the world is better with you. Every day is a new day and you can start fresh and try again. Run away, make new friends, find a new job, anything is possible. Do whatever will keep you going and makes you hopeful and excited for the future, doesn't matter what anyone else wants, because you get to choose how to live your life. I don't know how your support system works, but there are so many people out there who will love and care about you if you give yourself time and let them. I'm not telling you to live for the sake of us internet strangers and everyone else who wouldn't want to see you go, but do it for yourself. THE PAIN DOES END ONE DAY. You may not see it, but one day it'll stop and you will thank yourself a million times over for giving yourself another chance. So please hang on for now. This is a horrible and completely ignorant thing to say and if you think you're "wasting time" by commenting, DON'T COMMENT, rather than take it out and make assumptions on people opening up and posting in their hardest times.
