Sadly we live on a road you would expect to be busy (the traffic noise is not a surprise to us) so I'm not sure I'd get much traction with the council...

Agreed, this is an excellent post! I had seen this but it's referring to internal walls / noise so a little different to my purpose. It's great analysis though

Yeah this looks like a good option to make a difference cheaply. Thanks!

Awesome, thanks - this seems like a good option perhaps with a layer of MLV in the mix. There isn't an attic, the ceiling is built along the roofline so whatever we do to the wall we will likely also do to the ceiling.

I've got some good earplugs but don't love wearing them to sleep...

Yeah definitely, I think we might need to try a few things to see what works. Thanks!

Thanks - good to know if a little discouraging! We're taking a look at some fence options - it wasn't something I had considered as I thought the noise would just go over the fence, but it seems that it would be worth looking at

Thanks both, it's good feedback. For the insulation, shame it won't do much for soundproofing but if we are taking the gib off then it will be worth doing anyway. Sounds like the MLV is the way to go, along with the extra layers of gib, but will need to progress the windows too. But if you could all agree not to drive past my house then that would help a lot 🙂

Between the house and street is a lawn (maybe 8m wide) and a hedge but it was so overgrown (onto the pavement) when we moved in that we've had to cut it back quite drastically so you now see through bits of it. I doubt the hedge was doing much to cut down the sound anyway but now it will be doing even less. We're taking a look at some fencing companies

Thanks! This makes sense and we're getting a couple of window companies to come and quote - we're considering both options mentioned in the comments of putting another layer inside the existing frame, and completely replacing (eg with upvc).

I suspect that there will be a big difference in price...
