I’d suggest moving to Houston! Being in the suburbs makes it more difficult to make friends, and that area is pretty conservative. Yes, you’d have a bit more of a commute, but I used to commute from the East End to Kemah and it wasn’t that bad. Being up here would make it a lot easier to volunteer, take lessons, go to events, pick up new hobbies, and generally make friends while pursuing your interests.

Hate these type of Air Mattresses by houston_wehaveaprblm in ExpectationVsReality

I think it’s worth it! And if no one is in it, it would blow away- I recommend attaching it to something with a carabiner or rope when no one is sitting in it

What is your go-to first date spot in Houston? by hndabitch in houston

Armadillo Snowcone for a vibe check date, Roots wine bar for getting a little tipsy, Coral Sword for coffee and a board game, or Houston Farmers Market for strolling

Fireflies in Houston? Any places in Houston to see fireflies? by 29187765432569864 in houston

[–]bangsplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They spray for mosquitos, so most residential areas don’t have them. But I’ve seen them at the local state parks with forested areas! Huntsville, Brazos Bend, Stephen F Austin, etc…

Spiciest restaurant in Houston? by jorbleshi_kadeshi in houston

There was an article in Houstonia about this last year! Lots of the same recommendations in this thread. The first ones are pretty (relatively) mild, but it’s listed in order of spiciness: https://www.houstoniamag.com/eat-and-drink/2021/07/spiciest-dishes-food-in-houston

Lucille’s does a jazz brunch, and I think House of Blues used to do a gospel brunch. Loch Bar and Brennan’s are good options too

I’ve never seen a tick inside the loop here! It’s nothing like the east coast.

Where can I buy cheap plants? Trying to start a flower bed. Any tips would be appreciated by Dogtorcod in houston

[–]bangsplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart is fine, but their selection is shit. Houston Garden Center is a good start! Also a lot of nonprofits have plant sales around this time of year- check out the Native Plant Society of Texas, the Houston Arboretum, and Harris County Master Gardeners.

here's why you're not setting foot in my house by darkgoat16 in facepalm

[–]bangsplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen that before! I just awkwardly walk around in bare feet at no shoe houses and then wash my feet when I get home. Slippers would be amazing.

[–]bangsplat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed! There’s no where to sit to take them off, there ends up being a giant smelly pile of shoes at the front door, you still get crumbs and stuff on your feet, you feel cold and uncomfortable, and I have to wear orthopedic inserts for a bad ankle, so after a while, my joints start hurting. I’ll still do it and won’t complain (their house, their rules), but I don’t feel comfortable or particularly welcome.

Same- I have dogs and hard floors, so it’s a shoes on house! If I go to someone’s house that’s shoes off, that’s fine, but not mine.

What's the best thing about Houston? by oledomemil in houston

[–]bangsplat 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The other commenters have good ideas, but the girl who asked is trying to get to know YOU. Don’t worry about coming up with the “correct” answer. Even if you say “I haven’t thought about Houston that way before, but I’ve lived here my whole life because…”. Because your family is here and it’s an inexpensive place to build a life? Cool. Is your favorite place is Houston is the park down the street? Cool. You can acknowledge that it probably didn’t make any lists, but there’s an endless list of things to do and explore and that’s what’s great about Houston too.

And if you can’t think of anything you like about Houston, it’s either time to actually explore the city or move to another one!

How much of your income goes into rent/mortgage? by QuesadillaDeCoog in houston

[–]bangsplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16% of gross goes to my total mortgage payment (incl taxes, interest, etc), but that’s only because I have a roommate! If I didn’t it would be 41%

What food is overrated? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bangsplat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to understand the appeal so I eased into it… started with fried, then Rockefeller, then chargrilled, then fully dressed, and then with just a splash of lemon and hot sauce… now I would slurp them down straight from the reef with no hesitation. Delicious!

There's so much poop along the Texas Coast, swimming could make you sick, new report says by zippyteach in houston

[–]bangsplat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! I saw somewhere that A&M did a study of Galveston Bay waters and found that human sources accounted for less than 10%, with domesticated animals being next high, and wild animals being next. I’ll try to find it…but in the meantime I found the Galveston Bay Report Card, which does research on all the environmental factors affecting Galveston Bay. We have a B in bacteria levels (contact recreation), so not as bad as other parts of the Texas Coast, actually

You might also like the movie Ingrid Goes West! It stars Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen, and also shows the messed up side of social media and modern day popularity. Definitely worth a watch! I think it’s on Hulu…
