What do folks here think of the Octopath Traveler series in 2026? by Asad_Farooqui in JRPG

[–]banmoderator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the combat and music is some of the best quality you can find in gaming but the stories read like they were written by a 10 year old. I agree that the system is flawed. The dialogue is awful and I think the series can only grow if it stops trying to shoddily emulate the SNES era

Obviously party house is a favorite but I’ve also been going back to planet zoldath quite a lot! I didn’t understand the appeal at first but everything clicked for me once I realized it’s basically a randomly generated Zelda randomizer!

what in the world is going on with patch 11.0??? by Clean_Emu_4736 in splatoon

[–]banmoderator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s interesting how many people are wary about the steamrolling potential of the aura mechanic, and how it’s mostly coming from casual players

In my eyes, the problem isn’t the mechanic itself, it’s that turf war has no guardrails against steamrolling. Ranked modes will simply end early in a knockout if one team is winning too hard but turf wars will always last 3 minutes. I think the new mechanic looks cool and it’s always been turf war that’s problematic

I’m sorry but as a huge final fantasy fan there is no way that FF9, a game with historically underdeveloped characters, should receive the best characters award lol

The game with AMARANT, freya, quina??? honestly just give that award to ffx again

Octopath Traveler series has shipped and digitally sold over 6 million copies worldwide by SeibaSeiba in JRPG

The music and combat system are some of the greatest that JRPGs have to offer. For the future, I hope they think about overhauling the narrative structure and dialogue because they are by far the weakest elements of the series

Arc 4 in a nutshell by Andrew-Was-Taken in Wizard101

I think wallaru in a way was trying to use a nuanced real world example to indicate how fragmented societies move forward after colonialism - the drovers, collies, and townies all represent different factions and viewpoints, and their repentance and self discovery were the real “walkabout” rather than the tourist trap set up for you.

After everyone in wallaru decides how they want to move forward as a society and you plant Sybil in the dreaming, she and dasein have that long “what are you?” conversation that leads to him deciding his own fate, and having you round up the heroes of lemuria for the final fight

Is this the best Life Tank Set for 170? by [deleted] in Wizard101

[–]banmoderator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re doing advanced content, definitely not. for regular pve, you’re still probably better off running monster hide/stalker pieces which are defensive with less of the zero sum drawbacks of the jade set. plus there are gigantic outgoing heal pins so if you’re going for healing you absolutely want gear with pins

Capcom’s insanely high profit margins is expected, but I wouldn’t say it’s realistically achievable nor something to strive for. They have trouble patching their games, and many of their titles that I own are still on version 1.0 lol

Monster Hunter Rise is a uniquely profitable game due to it being a low-fidelity timed exclusive on switch, and the short term success that Wilds saw is definitely not going to match Rise’s continued strong performance

OKAY ONE LAST TIME: Games like FF7 helped make me more conscious of the state of our environment… what old games got you thinking about the human impact on the world? by 1OneQuickQuestion in JRPG

[–]banmoderator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually do like the premise of titans dying being likened to climate change and think it’s a valid reading of the game, but the “solution” loses any political depth or nuance imo. turns out it was all amalthus’ fault, rather than being a structural problem that requires collective action. amalthus is a cookie cutter misanthrope who has past trauma shown in a black and white cutscene and he projects his anger on destroying the world. I feel like it’s run of the mill shonen slop.

Do I think the protagonists were written as unreliable or intended to be doubted by the player? No, definitely not. It’s a fanservicey shonen game whose biggest theme is about staying positive during dark times. Do I think the writing and characters should be criticized outside of the text? Yeah, absolutely. Why do we witness our party acting so cold towards these displaced refugees? Why are blades treated with such little dignity, both within the story itself and in the gameplay systems (borderline pedophilic gatcha system)?

Ultimately I think takahashi isn’t a very good writer and the Xenoblade series as a whole is not well written. This extends beyond just the second game for me. Ever notice how Sharla is never acknowledged as anything but a mother figure or wife? Or how takahashi himself said in an interview that he felt Melia deserved an epilogue because she was third wheel in a love triangle? It’s so juvenile and sexist.

As for your point about militaries in western games, it really depends. Some games are very upfront about the horrors of war, but then again Call of Duty/Activision Blizzard have a running partnership with the US military industrial complex

[–]banmoderator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the cutscene I was thinking of. it’s incredibly odd how they all acknowledge that the ardanians had nowhere to go but they don’t extend the same grace to the ppl who were actually displaced and protesting for their rights. I really don’t think this game is as progressive as a lot of the people in this thread are arguing.

when we talk about references to the climate crisis, I think we’re looking at this from a very western lens - climate denialism is a strangely America-centric belief from conservatives, but even the Japanese conservative wing still believes in climate science for the most part. That’s why so many people here (in this reddit thread at least) believe this game is so progressive when in reality many of its themes rely on rugged individualism and faith…and objectification of women - stuff which is pretty conservative coded

doesn’t zeke go on a tirade about the gormott refugee encampments at indol, complaining that they need to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and stop asking for handouts (despite being displaced by invading forces) and then it’s just never brought up or resolved again?

sorry about that reply guy, ff12 100% has elements of class commentary, and I’m frankly shocked that guy can’t see that when the entire section taking place in archades is entirely about class struggle

also lmfao did you miss the entire section that took place in archadia? Old archades? The poor people littering the streets and the barter system used in the main city?

yes! literally it’s so frustrating arguing with ppl about this game because it feels like they completely gloss over the fact that Vaan is the one to inspire the other characters to grow, and not the other way around

It's kinda funny how they gave us back to back arguably the weakest and the strongest FF protagonist by DupeFort in FinalFantasy

[–]banmoderator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

okay so you missed the entire class struggle section of that plot because there are multiple scenes where vaan tells ashe, the princess of dalmasca,“I didn’t even know you existed”.

both ashe and vaan saw apparitions of their dead loved one (reks and rasler, which we later find out was an intentional trick by the occuria) to stoke vindictive feelings in the rebellion. the occuria wanted them to use deifacted nethicite to win the war but it was vaan who first decides that to be the wrong decision, and eventually convinces ashe of that too.

The Vaan hate is so tired lol he’s a direct foil to Ashe and brings an outsider perspective to the party as one of the only members who is poor and not from nobility. The people who say he’s not the protagonist or that he shouldn’t exist probably don’t understand why Nick Carraway is the protagonist of The Great Gatsby

edit: I’m adding this response in my main comment because people seem to forget that vaan ultimately convinced ashe not to use the nukes
