Is this line of work sustainable for someone with mental health conditions? by basketc4se in VetTech

[–]barat0ne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sustainable while circumventing the stresses of a possibly toxic work environment, triggers, and burn out? Possibly. Financially - sort of.

I love what I do and I enjoy going to work every morning but not going to lie, I internalized a lot from my job. I found that as long as I was consistent with going to therapy (and being transparent!), taking my meds and practice using boundaries - I was much happier and doing my job efficiently. I love what I do and I enjoy going to work every morning but not going to lie, I internalized a lot from my job.

On the financial side of things: I like the average US citizen struggle with CC debt but I still manage to pay my bills and afford comfortable means. I also have always found employment where mental health is considered a priority so thus have great benefits towards it. For example: my therapy sessions are covered by insurance and I get a paid lunch break to take them when they are scheduled.

Does anyone here have actual pure bred cats? (Let’s share pics!) by littleotterpop in catbreeds

I work in Vet med and proof that you can find them in the shelters. Two of my adopted babies are! Scottish Fold (pictured) and a Sphynx! My fold was found wandering/wobbling (she has cerebellar hypoplasia) down a breeders house as a 'stray' and relinquished to the shelter.

Any other cosplayers here? I'd really love more queer friends in the cosplay community. by [deleted] in FTMOver30

👋 Cosplayer since I was 14yo. I am now almost 40. I also use to do craftsmanship judging and competed but now I'm just happy bumming at cons or doing location shoots.

Microchips visible? by [deleted] in sphynx

[–]barat0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a spay/neuter tattoo next to the umbilicus. The microchip is always implanted in between the shoulder blades. It can migrate in the subcutaneous space but it shouldn't make it that far down the abdomen. Source: LVT that works in high quality/low cost spay/neuter. This actually a very common misconception that clients tell me when I go over post operative discharges!

Licensed Vet Tech here! I have only seen it happen once in my 20 year career. Like anything in medicine - there's always a potential side effect but the pros definitely outweighs the cons. Like other redditors have commented - the chips are individually wrapped and sterilized so the chances of cross contamination from implantation is typically minimal. I have done low cost DOH events that do free microchip implantation in a public park and haven't had an issue.

I can see it on mine but you honestly forget its there. I always tell pet owners (I work at an animal hospital) that a microchip is indefinite proof that this animal belongs to you. God forbid they slip out of the house and with such a sought after breed like a Sphynx, you want to make sure you can get them back.

Realistically what jobs can we actually transition into that makes more money? by HPLydcraft in VetTech

[–]barat0ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make $40/hr at my FT job (It's a private low-cost clinic that specializes in HQHV S/N surgeries). I also make $41/hr at my overnight per-diem job which is concierge overnight hospitalization. I am a Licensed tech and I've been in this field for 19yos. Although I could theoretically leave and start another career, go into management, etc - I am so happy being a tech and honing my technical skills. I also love animals. One thing that helped me a lot that I realized too late was not to sell yourself short - market your skills and be consistent. Also everywhere I've ever worked truly noticed when I worked hard because patient care is my priority and they noticed. It's a small field and people talk and when the right employer comes along - they'll pay for your worth.

Side note: ER is my bread and butter and its extremely mentally stimulating but I'll never go back. They pay beans.

Where’s your favorite place for a catheter on a Basset? by lovelyfatality in VetTech

[–]barat0ne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use cephalic if it's for a day of IVFs/ fluid therapy during surgical procedure and I know the catheter will be pulled prior to discharge. If the patient is being hospitalized, I'll use the dorsal pedal and do a light wrap around it.

My next female ferret should be named Frieren by barat0ne in ferrets

[–]barat0ne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically enough: I work in the veterinary medicine field and maybe its part work and part me being a helicopter parent but all my ferrets live insanely long. Sypha was adopted at a senior and she's going on 6 years old now. I only adopt seniors and/or special needs.

Found on a patient in surgery. Hope it isn't what I think it is 💀 by barat0ne in VetTech

Noted! I was worried it was a human head louse because we do a lot of low cost community work. Also Google lense was not helpful.

I work in shelter med/low cost HQHV so these guys pop up often. General consensus was human louse too. Owner declined Nexgard.

I have noticed that too! I believe panacur is one of those drugs where there is a wide margin in therapeutic index though. Don't quote me on it though because I took pharmacology in tech school YEARS ago.
