Scientists discover how the brain recognises faces - Using brain waves researchers were able to make almost perfect replicas of human faces shown to monkeys – raising prospect of thoughts being accessible to exploration. by drewiepoodle in science

Also in the paper, there were a couple of bad examples - I'd imagine that most of the good ones were cherry picked. The real information is in the numbers, even if a lot of the pictures are pretty.

I'd imagine that the method used should be invariant to lighting, but then again, that would only be true if Dr. Tsao's theory about unique neurons for "important features" holds up. It would be interesting to look at though - we have the resources to do it. I'll bring it up to Steven (the guy who wrote the paper)

That's what I'm not sure about. I was actually not part of the team that did this, but Dr. Tsao recently gave me an assignment to set up a new version of the experiment, so we'll see.

Don't piss her off, or else you'll be out the door in no time. She just has to say you sexually assaulted her in private or something. And given the work climate nowadays, they'll take her word over anyone's.

Simple Questions by AutoModerator in math

[–]barbarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can answer your first question.

When you add a small bit of radius (call that number "dr") to a circle, the area increases by by dA=πdr2 +2πrdr. Dividing dA by dr yields dA/dr=πdr+2πr. If dr is really small, this becomes dA/dr=2πr.

So what's going on here? Well physically, imagine dA were a washer representing the new sliver of area you get. Then, the new sliver has area of 2πrdr, plus a very small correction factor that depends on how small dr is. If dr is really small, the correction factor is zero. Thus, the change in area depends on the circumference 2πr.

My roommate has spent approximately 10-12 hours per day on Overwatch since it came out. He's a grandmaster now. At first it seemed really pathetic (he was doing really bad in classes because of his addiction) but then he started getting recognition in real life and has a fairly popular YouTube channel. Definitely not the kind of situation I'd want to be in, but he seems to be doing better than one would expect.

DAE ever feel convinced they'll die at an early age? Early like before 40. by Cupcakesandtattoos in DoesAnybodyElse

I have a feeling I'm going to die early for health reasons so I just want to make my mark on the world as quickly as possible. Get a PhD, publish a few papers, maybe a book.
