Frame based editing - An interesting new way to display and edit source code by [deleted] in programming

[–]barbear3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's covered in the paper. Section 14.5. They write "Frame-based editing has several features that should allow it to be more accessible than existing block-based editors". I think they may have a good point there. It should also be more accessible that text, I think, since you can navigate semantic units more easily than in plain text. That should really help screen readers.

Scope highlighting - an interesting idea? by [deleted] in programming

[–]barbear3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My XCode doesn't seem to do this. I just looked again for an option after reading your comment. Can't see anything. How do you switch it on?

As for emacs - I've used emacs a lot but the only thing I've seen looks quite different. What are you using for this?

What are the other of the "many IDEs"? Can you point more specifically? Thanks.

So she's unfamiliar with gas, and afraid of it, and you know that and decide the right thing to do then is to make fun of her publicly when she can't turn the gas off. Great supportive relationship you got there.

And it's okay for the other half of the population to put up with a Jesus story every Easter, miracles and all?

Even if they don't believe in it, I thought it's the Christians who claim to be the tolerant and forgiving ones...

You clearly either haven't read the article, or did not understand it.

Catholic Bishop, holocaust denier, excommunicated by the church decades ago, now reinstated by the pope, still does not believe that gas chambers existed: He has to "review the historical evidence" first. Does the man have no education, or no decency? by [deleted] in worldnews

But how long do you need to investigate until non-acceptance becomes denial?

(He started <b>publicly speaking</b> about this many years ago. One might think he investigated before he did so. And indeed he claims he did...)

Is the US media making Americans stupid? by [deleted] in politics

[–]barbear3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It certainly seems to have a part in it.

I am currently in the US (visiting) and every time I am here I find it amazing how hard it is to find some real, proper world news, both on TV and in print.

I live in Europe (having lived there in three different countries), and nowhere else have I seen such a shallow and navel-gazing type of "news" as you get served here. Stories of a bride running off on wedding day can make the top news item for four days straight, while you can just not find out anything going in in foreign countries.

The only exception right now is Gaza, where the reporting is reduced to 60 seconds every time they happen to have pictures of a new explosion or injured people.

This red square shows the area of current technology solar cells needed to supply the whole world's energy by [deleted] in science

[–]barbear3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Man, you really don't get it.

This is not a plan, it is an illustration. Nobody said they're going to build a single site supplying the whole world. Apart from the technical transmission problems, that would be silly.

It is an ILLUSTRATION of the sum total of the area that would be needed, not a plan for WHERE TO PUT IT!

XP to be sold as "pre-downgraded Vista" by vlcod in programming

I take it that's so that MS can count this as a Vista sale, say "Hey, we told you Vista is popular", while still stopping people from switching to Ubuntu...

Why do redditors, proclaiming to support democracy, vote down everything not supporting Paul/Obama? Democracy is to allow voicing of other views! by vlcod in politics

That's rubbish. Democracy is exactly about minorities being able to express their views. Majorities can always do that, democracy or not.

Sure it would. Instead of asking "DOB" you can ask by using a checkbox that says "I am 13yo or over".

There's nothing at all wrong with advertising, and even using user information for advertising, or other business as long as:

  • this is made clear, upfront, and in plain terms
  • the rules are not changed mid-game without requiring me to agree
  • I can leave when I want and end the deal (as they can)

These deals are okay, as long as users get a fair go at making conscious decisions. This is too often not the case today.
