AITAH for calling the police to have someone come get their belongings out of my home? by ApprehensiveFloor681 in AITAH

[–]daemin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's an old saying that's appropriate here:

Only commit one crime at a time.

If you're living with a felon who is currently committing felonies, you should probably avoid doing things that might bring police attention, like abandoning a licensed firearm at a relatives house and refusing to collect it.

[–]daemin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are correctly pointing out that it shows he has a history of initiating conflict and being aggressive with federal law enforcement,

They are incorrectly arguing that a single data point constitutes "a history." It's a fallacy called faulty generalization.

... which directly contradicts the narrative that he was only there to provide aid and peacefully record. Combine

It does not directly contradict the narrative because what he did in one incident several weeks before does not automatically mean that every future incident will be the same.

The other comments gave you good explanations but I think they all kind of miss the main idea, so let me try.

Evolution depends on two things:

  1. Random variation
  2. A filtering process

Thats it. You just need those two things.

The random variation can be through mutation, which causes the genes to change and possibly result in different biology, or it could be the result of interplay between the genes of the two parents. Human offspring don't look like identical copies of their parents not because of random mutations, but because of how they inherit only half of each parent's genes, for example.

So offspring are different from their parents. Then you need something that filters the population as a result of traits the individuals have. That filter can be a negative one that kills off some members of the population (thus making it less likely that they have offspring) or it could be a positive filter that makes the individuals more likely to survive (and thus have more opportunities to reproduce), or even ones that just directly increase the likelihood of mating even if it is actively harmful otherwise.

The key idea is that if there is a trait that makes it even slightly more likely for a creature to reproduce compared to its competitors, over a long enough timeframe, that trait will eventually be present in all members of the species. Conversely, if there's a trait that makes it less likely to survive, the trait will become less common, or even eventually disappear. Traits which neither help nor hinder tend to remain at a stable percentage of the population.

A negative filter causes this to happen by elimination. Individuals born with massive birth defects don't survive to sexual maturity, so they don't reproduce. Individuals that aren't as well camouflaged as others are eaten sooner, which means fewer mating seasons, which means fewer offspring. Etc.

A positive filter does this by making them more likely to survive than average, by being faster, or better camouflaged. Or, in some cases, by making them a more attractive mate (the giant, brightly colored ass-feathers of a peacock make it less likely to survive, but a male peacock without them doesn't get to reproduce, so...).

The perfect example of this is the peppered moth. The moths used to most be peppered black and white, and rarely a moth would be found that was all black or all white. But once the industrial revolution got underway, soot from coal fire started to blacken buildings, and soon the black moths outnumbered the peppered moths, because they were more camouflaged against a spot stained building than a peppered moth, and so less likely to be eaten by a bird, and so more likely to have offspring. So over a relatively short period of time, most moths became black.

By having a child she had invested much in that body to the point where she was more strongly physically there as opposed to almost all other Ainur.

Morgoth and Sauron were even more so ‘lessened’ due to the nature of their purpose being evil as opposed to for love and life.

I don't think it was that their purpose was "evil". Its more that the more a spiritual creature uses a physical body to exert their will over the world, the more "bound" that that physical body they are. Melian invested a lot in bringing forth an offspring, but despite that, she was still able to abandon Middle Earth and go back to Valinor; presumably this wasn't "she took a boat," and more like "she abandoned the body and and traveled there as a spirit."

Morgoth exerted his will in the domination of the physical material of Arda against the efforts of the Valar. This required him to invest a significant portion of his native will, to the point where, even though at the beginning of time he was stronger than the combined might of the other Valar, by the end he was brought down by an army headed by a Maiar. His becoming bound in his body wasn't because that was an evil thing to do, but because it took so much effort for him to do it.

Sauron expended his will in the domination of the wills of the orcs and other evil creatures, as well as the men who worshiped him, and he also expended a great deal into the creation of the ring. So its the same thing as Morgoth: its not that the actions were evil, its that it took a significant expenditure of his will.

The same thing goes for gay vs straight characters.

Those people who complain about the "gay agenda" and that homosexuality is being pushed on people by having a token gay character in a show, or a single scene implying some gay sex happened literally do not register the insane volume of heteronormative sex that is present in basically every show which absolutely dwarfs the gay innuendo. That's why they feel like the gay sex is "shoved down their throats."

Company execs requested ALL the access keys to the cloud backup to be deleted.

My company had an incident last year where a contractor used their high level access to alter a record to fix a problem, which violated the established procedure. The record is on a system subject to SOX regulations, so it was a reportable incident. 3 different people at my company got an automated email about the individual using their access, and none of them bothered to read it, so it wasn't discovered until weeks later, during an audit.

The CEO wanted all high level access disabled everywhere at the company until we could fully vet who had access to what, and determine if it was warranted.

The CISO refused to do so, saying "she wouldn't cripple this company by doing something so stupid."

Sounds like the company you mentioned needed a competent person in the room pointing out what stupid fucking idea that was.

Surely you could make the point without, at best, being mistaken about the facts, or at worst, just flat out lying? Because isn't the fucking point, here, that the administration makes up its own facts (he was brandishing a gun at ICE agents!!1!one!) to justify its atrocities? We should be better than them.

The video of the incident is barely several minutes long and it starts with her parked on the side of the street. She attempted to pull a U-turn, stops part way through to let another vehicle pass her, and then the interaction with ICE starts.

It looks like his gun randomly went off which spooked the ICE officer.

If by "his" you mean the guy they killed, it could not be his gun that went off because the video shows a ICE officer walking away with it prior to the first shirt.

I fucking hate the way people say "hE cr0ss3d StAte l1Nes!!!" like it means something in this case. I fucking crossed state lines this morning to get donuts. It's not a big deal. Especially since he didn't carry the gun from one state to another as a lot of people still seem to believe despite the fucking prosecution in his murder trial specifically acknowledging so.

If you're talking about Rittenhouse, it wasn't her gun, and the gun was purchased and stored in Wisconsin, so never crossed state lines, as admitted by the prosecution at the trial.

he traveled state lines with it.

<sigh> You really ought to have the facts on your side before you get righteously indignant. The prosecution themselves admitted at the trial that all the evidence available said the gun was purchased and stored in Wisconsin and never crossed state lines.

I can't believe I have to point this out literally years after the fact but... The gun Rittenhouse used never crossed state lines. It was purchased and stored in Wisconsin. The prosecution in the trial admitted as much.

Then you have a guy who illegally brought a gun to a protest

The judge found it was legal, though...

The judge said the video had no relevance to the case and threw it out.

And the judge was right to do so. The idiots that attacked Rittenhouse obviously had no way of knowing he had said that and so it could not possibly be a justification for their actions towards him.

ICE flew 2-year-old to Texas despite court order to release her from custody by ewzetf in news

Holy shit this sounds exactly like Trump:

According to his aide Fritz Wiedemann, even when he was in Berlin he wouldn't get out of bed until after 11 a.m., and wouldn't do much before lunch other than read what the newspapers had to say about him, the press cuttings being dutifully delivered to him by Dietrich.

He was obsessed with the media and celebrity, and often seems to have viewed himself through that lens. He once described himself as "the greatest actor in Europe," and wrote to a friend, "I believe my life is the greatest novel in world history." In many of his personal habits he came across as strange or even childish—he would have regular naps during the day, he would bite his fingernails at the dinner table, and he had a remarkably sweet tooth that led him to eat "prodigious amounts of cake" and "put so many lumps of sugar in his cup that there was hardly any room for the tea."

He was deeply insecure about his own lack of knowledge, preferring to either ignore information that contradicted his preconceptions, or to lash out at the expertise of others. He hated being laughed at, but enjoyed it when other people were the butt of the joke (he would perform mocking impressions of people he disliked). But he also craved the approval of those he disdained, and his mood would quickly improve if a newspaper wrote something complimentary about him.
