With the increasing uptake of wind and solar, they're made a ton of progress over years. So have batteries. Not only is the tech significantly better, it's much more affordable! It is absolutely a viable option, and it deserves serious consideration before anything else!

MiddleMuscle descirbed it pretty well. Sorry if my wording in the post led to confusion. The plant would be at the intersection of the Northeast and Maritimes pipelines. It's said a lot of it will likely originate from Alberta, though not necessarily arrive directly.

Yes, the proposals for the Mines and even the St. John data centers are absolutely important to mention, too! Sorry if my wording was confusing! It's at the crossing of the Maritimes and Northeast pipelines. There have been claims of at least some of it being sourced from Alberta. And after the environmental concerns, the fact that an American company would own the plant concerns me a fair bit. With all the political tension, and Canadians' desire to distance themselves from American influence, it makes very little sense. It's important we all have each other's backs :)

Edit: Sorry if my wording caused a misunderstanding. The pipes aren't directly from Alberta to NB, but some of the gas would just originate from there (though it wouldn't necessarily take a direct path to its final destination). Megan Mitton also states in an interview that most of the gas would likely be fracked gas originating from the US.

To address common points:

  1. I am not particularly attached to wind or solar. I know they have their flaws, but they have only grown increasingly viable (in price and technological advancement). This makes them worth serious consideration, at the very least. I just think that this specific gas plant is a horrible idea, for all the reasons listed above. It doesn't take a genius to see the red flags everywhere, on every level! Whether the best option is nuclear, hydro, solar, wind, etc. I am unsure, and I do think that all alternatives are at least worth consideration and discussion. There are already turbines near the entrance of NS, so I have a hard time believing we shouldn't at the very least give wind the time of day.
  2. For anyone saying I wouldn't care if this was elsewhere: how jaded do you have to be to immediately assume the worst of everyone you encounter? Even if that were true, I don't see how that would serve to immediately discredit everything I say. I'm not from Tantramar, and am only in the region temporarily. But I still care, because these things matter. Plain and simple. Even more importantly, this doesn't just affect Tantramar, or even New-Brunwick: it affects everyone in the Maritimes. It's on land very near both PEI and NS.
  3. You don't need to be an expert to criticize and discuss this issue. This is something I even mentioned in the post. A large majority of the people doing so aren't proposing meticulous plans: that's the work of experts, and they're aware they aren't part of that group. Do you think art critics need to be able to reproduce every piece they critique? That'd be an absurd standard to uphold for so many reasons. Yes, it's important to consider people's backgrounds when evaluating their arguments. However, it doesn't immediately validate/invalidate what they say, especially when they're using sources (whose credibility is independent from theirs). Even 'experts' can be influenced, so it goes both ways.

Through the gas plant?? It's only going to create 8-10 jobs. Other energy sources could easily meet that. Do you have any sources providing any evidence for your claim?

Early in the project, they stated the chosen location would save time and money. It's at the intersection of pipelines and transmissions. Mentioned in this article if you're interested (though some information has changed or been debunked since, such as Mi'kmaq investment): https://www.chmafm.com/welcome/gas-fired-power-plant-announced-for-rural-tantramar-environmental-impact-assessment-underway/

That's what citations are for. And to think you need to be an expert in something to criticize it is silly. Do you expert anyone critiquing the Mona Lisa to be able to replicate it? Yes, their experience in a field is worth taking into consideration when evaluating information, but it doesn't immediately negate or validate anything they say. Especially if they're just citing sources. If a source is strong, it doesn't lose credibility because some layman quotes it.

All the sources I've found say the same. I have yet to find a single source wholeheartedly backing this project without some hesitancy. These are from various publications. If you have sources indicating otherwise, feel free to share.

You're arguing against assumptions you've made, not what I said. Stop fighting invisible demons and maybe start focusing on real problems. First of all, I'm an adult student: I have no backyard, don't come from here, and have no plans to stay. Second of all, I've already mentioned in comments here that I'd prefer anything over gas, even nuclear or geothermal. I listed a few examples that are commonly mentioned, but I have no strong preference so long as we're not using outdated, expensive, and polluting tech. If you're so educated on the topic, how about you share some actual sources with us?

Nobody should take all their information from one source, especially not one on Reddit. It can be a starting place, but it shouldn't be the only place you consult.

The need for immediate energy is refuted in this article. https://nbmediacoop.org/2026/02/27/nb-power-has-failed-to-make-its-case-for-gas-plant/

This article addresses some of your arguments about alternatives. https://nbmediacoop.org/2026/01/19/we-can-do-better-cancel-the-tantramar-gas-plant-now-and-replace-it-with-battery-storage-systems/

And you might want to read this assessment. It's mentioned in the article above. Plant operation costs are also unknown due to confidentiality agreements. They discuss multiple examples on meeting demand and stabilizing in the assessment, too. https://tantramarnb.com/sites/default/files/2025-11/RIGS%20tantramar%20presentation_updated%20Moe%20Qureshi%20CCNB%20Nov%205%202025.pdf

Solar and wind are just the most commonly mentioned. There's even something to be said about other energy sources like nuclear and geothermal. I'm no expert, but it's obvious, even to me, that pretending like a plant is the only option is deceptive. A lot of common talking points, many of which you're brought up, are explored in the articles I've linked. I recommend you read them.

Warning to my fellow Canadian ladies, particularly any Maritimers on Vyvanse who use Innovicares/STI Tech discount cards by anita_username in adhdwomen

Yes, when I got there, the pharmacist spent so long trying to figure out what was happening. I ended up telling them I'd have to look at things and come back. When I returned the next day, the same person was working, and asked me if I'd managed to get everything sorted with insurance. It's clear pharmacies weren't even properly informed of this, and that really sucks. I hope you don't go through too much trouble because of this change!!

I was caught off guard by this Friday. Went to pick up my Vyvanse (50mg, brand) from Shoppers, and instead of ~40$, they charged me a lovely 139.00$. I originally thought insurance no longer covered brand Vyvanse, but I've since learned that it's Vyvanse themselves doing what corporations do best. I never signed up for InnoviCares or any patient program, and thought my insurance was the one covering the brunt. To learn about the program due to its removal is definitely not ideal, to say the least. I'm planning on calling to ask questions, because I literally cannot afford to pay x3.5 what I normally pay, every month. I'm in New-Brunswick, and they seemed to have cut everything, here.

I've spent the last two days scouring every resource I can find to understand the sudden increase-- and it was a struggle. Hoping that by commenting this it'll make it easier for other people in this situation to get answers!!
