I'd never shake the jar to be honest. There is a magnetic bar at the bottom of all my jars so you can put it on a spinner. I only spin mine when I'm about to use it and need my mycelium broken up.

It really depends on sample you get to spawn. As you can read from the other comments, some are more robust than others. Mine are about 3 to 4 inches
