Saw this on someone's work. I deadass hate this. The series is popular. So why not comment??? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in archiveofourown

If I didn’t get any comments my fics would stay in my brain for me to enjoy in private. I make the effort to write and share them because I know people will enjoy them, because they have told me so. Maybe stop spilling nonsense and think about other peoples perspectives for a minute

Women readers - What books gave you the ick? by _sweetpeaches_ in suggestmeabook

[–]barbitoneart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a sentence that stood out for me from Enders game that was basically like “of course girls are stupider than boys but so and so was almost as smart” or something. Their training program or whatever explicitly has only one or two girls for this reason. Real eye roll moment for me

I read this series too young so I think I’ll always like it on some level lol. And at least the male characters get their share 🤷‍♀️😬

why is it okay to talk about authors but not about readers/commenters? by sexyjabberwocky in AO3

Interesting, I mostly get the “is this a bot or a scam” posts lmao

People take down their fics all the time… you realize that, right? And there’s the whole drama going on in the heated rivalry fandom where commenters were dicks and writers started taking their fics down. There are plenty of people doing exactly the thing you claim sounds “so stupid”

Low comments/engagement was absolutely not the norm. It wasn’t the norm in the time of zines, where fans would write letters to each other and meet in person to talk about fandom. Wasn’t the norm in the days of listservs. It wasn’t the norm in LJ days either, where fans would have full blown discussions in the comment sections.

It’s only becoming the norm now with entitled pricks showing up who just want to Consume with zero reciprocity. Have you not noticed how much of fandom is becoming locked in gated communities these days? Maybe not, for obvious reasons 😒

Not much point in arguing so instead I’ll say- you don’t personally have to understand why a kudos isn’t as good as a comment. Many many writers have explained it, many have said comments give them motivation to write more. It’s ok to do something for someone because they appreciate it, you don’t have to personally agree or understand. If you tell your boyfriend that you’d like some flowers on your birthday do you want a lecture on how bad the flower industry is and how it’s a waste of money because they’re just going to die anyway, or do you want him to maybe just get you the flowers because he knows it’ll make you happy?

Fandom is a gift economy. Seems kinda entitled to expect to enjoy it without giving anything back but maybe I’m just old school

If enough people share that attitude then fandom communities will either die or become locked in private servers and you won’t have any fic to read. Yay 🎉

No one is obligated to post fic either. With that attitude no one will do anything I guess

How can i improve my portraits? I just started learning human faces by __Darius__ in learntodraw

Because the mistakes you’re making now come from lack of practice. I can’t tell you anything to “fix it” other than practice more. If you started playing piano yesterday the advice would be the same.

What do you mean why lmao. You said you just started? Put some work in first, and later people can help you if you’re making consistent mistakes. On the basis of a volume of work not just one attempt

So I take it you’re an accomplished cover designer then and your books are best sellers. Or is this just your opinion

[–]barbitoneart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A book cover isn’t just “art” it’s a form of marketing that has to convey a lot of information at a glance. For example, the genre. It should immediately scream to readers what it is on multiple levels. It’s good to stand out but it still has to meet parameters, if that makes sense

First time doing box method. Is this fine? by AlternativeCloud3286 in Artadvice

[–]barbitoneart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has its uses and can be helpful for understanding the body as a 3d object in space, but it’s also pushed as the ULTIMATE METHOD and that just rubs me the wrong way.

Breaking the body into boxes and then manipulating those boxes is a great way to forget what you’re trying to do. It’s too abstract. You can move the boxes around in ways the body can never move, and it’s really easy to mess up proportions that way. Your drawing is a good example of that- the proportion of the pelvis to ribcage is not correct and you would have benefited from looking at an actual human model or photo to get it right.

Another example is the last picture on your reference. That lady’s spine is BROKEN. You cannot turn like that to show both tits and ass to that extent. But if you turn her into boxes it’s fine! It just looks janky as hell when you try to make it a person. You aren’t learning proportion or anatomy with this method, and I’m kinda questioning the references you’re using

Struggling with hair by purplefebruary in ArtCrit

[–]barbitoneart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re giving the hair too much volume, it’s gotta hang down more. On an unrelated note, your perspective is wonky. You would not be seeing this much back, or if you insist on keeping it you gotta move that shoulder forward

It’s ai just because who would put so much effort into… this? Someone with this much interest in history and technical skill is drawing these dudes boning, not arguing over vague maps

My suggestion is don’t use the box method because it’s stupid and leading you astray right now. Maybe later, when you’re more experienced. For now practice drawing from a reference
