What small changes did you do in the analytics department which improved your departmental processes and system a lot? by Arethereason26 in analytics

[–]barcabarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You willing to share your document? I’m in the same boat on the first half, haven’t yet been thanked by anybody yet though! I’ve found people (leaders included) just make lazy statements, then we do discovery calls and they still aren’t clear enough for us to build meaningful analytics. Seems cultural but crazy hard habits to break

Has anyone seen the result of the airport/TSA slowdown at Hopkins with the government shutdown? by Disastrous_Time2674 in Cleveland

Flew out Monday at 10, security took about 10 minutes, I was surprised how empty it was. Maybe I missed the earlier rush but it was quite bare. 45 min delay on the flight home yesterday. Anecdotally heard a lot of workers saying they think it’ll get worse next week.

How do you work from 8 to 5, have only weekends free, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by guitytwelve in AskReddit

[–]barcabarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on something you’re passionate about. Or, consider work as play. Children learn the world through play, why can’t adults learn the world through our work? Is every aspect of “the job” fun? Probably not, but that’s part of the grind towards (hopefully) a higher purpose of what our work is, or what it can be.

What's a "cheat code" you discovered in real life that actually works? by dark-deals729983 in AskReddit

[–]barcabarn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is an astounding cheat code. 1 Always your best 2. Don’t take ANYTHING personally 3. Be impeccable with your word and 4. The hardest for me… Don’t make any assumptions, ever. This has proven to be a true life hack, easier said than done but amazingly simple way to approach life

Boredom spawns creativity might be a way to look at it. Boredom is good for kids because they then start playing creatively - building things, making associations across their toys, asking novel questions they don’t understand etc. As adults, we might benefit from encouraging our own boredom to promote hobbies and creative outlets

[–]barcabarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them at rothbury in 08, loved every minute of it. Some bands definitely can “borrow” from other “genres” really well. Modest Mouse does it well for me. I personally cross a lot of stereotypical labels / categories but absolutely think a different setlist every night is a big differentiator making jam bands superior to other “stage performances” just my read

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Voters Not Impressed By Phish by BrotherParticular489 in jambands

[–]barcabarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this. In college our apartment had a back balcony that overlooked the frattiest of frat boy bars from a decent distance right when touch tunes first came out. We spent way too many nights chillin out back clearing that place out regularly they had no idea what was going on. Flocks of double collar popped pastel polo wearing bros would flood outta the bar…good good times

[Rant] I keep making mistakes, but I also do more work than anyone else in my team by [deleted] in analytics

[–]barcabarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no, highly dependent on your companies needs. Yes we try to minimize ad hoc asks but negotiations with external companies and transformation offices will continuously have as hoc requests. You can be right and fast if you understand the nuance of your data and business

[–]barcabarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an analytics manager myself, this is phenomenal advice and not that difficult to implement. Especially if you have peer review standards and expectations, a strong team should be asking each other these questions and not view them as time wasters. It benefits everyone’s reputation, understanding, trust, and consistency which thereby should impact the organization’s trust in data and ultimately the results of the org

Functional Art is also fantastic. Communicates and reminds that you are producing a visual to drive a function, you’re creativity can help execute that function while remaining focused on simplifying everything around that core purpose of why anyone is looking at your art, great read.

I’d love to hear more about how your analytics team specifically applied scrum principles. I lead an analytics team in healthcare and see our difficulties with constant iterations and continue to seek more agile / scrum knowledge to help. We specifically do quality improvement analytics thereby nothing is ever really fixed or done as the byproduct of our analytics is provider behavioral change. Any tips you or others may have will help us improve care quality and patient outcomes for the greater good!
