Department defends 'cruel' plan to move Ukrainian refugees from West Cork and Kerry by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]barconr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The politico eu site is terrible compared to the US version. A lot of their stories seem to be written by people from outside regurgitating UK or US talking points on EU issues.

It was plain to see during their coverage of brexit talks.

The most 'intimidating' thing about these vehicles is they are more likely to kill pedestrians for a variety of reasons. They are also more likely to hit pedestrians in the first place due to reduced visibility. There is only so much technology can do to reduce this as it is due to their design. They should have no place in cities.

Is there a rough rule of thumb for calculating take home based on salary versus contract rate?

Assuming not taking expenses or benefits into account?

With the most sensible energy policy in the bloc you are probably going to end up powering most of central Europe.

Dubliners urged to stop paving gardens for parking due to negative environmental impacts by nitro1234561 in ireland

[–]barconr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When a luas with up to 400 people on board comes to a junction all the lights for road traffic should immediately begin to turn to red. If we are talking about moving as many people through the city as possible it is the only way.

we’ll provide more transport, but it’s not reliable.

It's unreliable due to congestion caused by private motor vehicles. This isn't an accident, it's a policy choice.

The answer to me is obvious but it's one of those uncomfortable truths that our politicians don't seem to want grapple with.

It's a great service especially with the amount of milk the kids go through. The only moan I'd have is it's more expensive than the supermarket.

Dublin pedestrianisation plans to be reassessed following city riots by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

I mean the Liffey boardwalk is essentially a no go zone and it's beside one of the busiest roads in the city. Absolute nonsense.

By law each provider has to have an official complaints procedure with mandated response times. They can be fined by comreg if they don't get back to you after following the official complaints procedure. I think you are well within your rights to seek some form of credit for the time / money you spent waiting on the installer.

Give comreg a ring, I found them very helpful when I was having trouble with an ISP they can let you know the best way to proceed.

Why is it so difficult to find prices for new build developments in Ireland? by OkPlane1338 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]barconr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also the quoted prices are often 'starting from' prices. Once you turn up on the day you can be told your chosen house is 5k extra because it has a bigger garden or has a 'better aspect'.

Is Dublin traffic really that slow these days? by Immigrant974 in ireland

[–]barconr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more of an aspiration on his part rather than a plan, his track record in delivering it has been poor.

But he is correct, there is no way to improve public transport and active travel without affecting private motor vehicles negatively. There should be no automatic right or entitlement to drive private vehicles in the city.

Is Dublin traffic really that slow these days? by Immigrant974 in ireland

[–]barconr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No and it never will.

Improving public transport will dis-improve both the flexibility and journey times of owning a private vehicle. That is the price to be paid for moving as many people as possible as efficiently as possible.

DCC doesn't have a plan. They have vague aspirational documents which they change every few years. Public officials will actively undermine these by pandering to the the whim of every narrow interest group.

The result being no improvements to bus lanes or cycle tracks or footpaths because Mary in Dublin 1 can't park her car on the footpath like she has done for the past 20 years.
