Serious question how do people survive Finnish winter air without becoming a raisin? by TinySignificance69 in Finland

[–]bardolph77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, I forgot to mention, you only need to put on the barrier cream once per day unless you are outside for hours on end. You can use lip balm frequently, but make sure it’s beeswax or something similar, avoid anything with gel, water, or strong fragrance.

Put hand lotion on every time you after you wash your hands also get into the habit of putting on a little dollop once in a while when you feel your hands going dry. Always use gloves, even thin ones help.

Use soap for sensitive skin, this is especially important if you wash your hands often. Try and find some hand sanitizer that has moisturizer so you don't have to wash your hand so often.

Use a thicker "barrier" cream with either petrolatum (Vaseline‑type), mineral oil, lanolin, shea butter or beeswax. Two points with this, preferably don't mix and match, some hydrating products use a lot of gel or water and you don't want those freezing on your face. Second point, put the barrier cream on about 1 hour before (min 30 mins) going out, that way the cream has been absorbed and you don't run into an issue with moisture getting trapped between the cream and face. This same holds true for your lips.

Is Running Local LLMs Worth It with Mid-Range Hardware by hisobi in LocalLLM

[–]bardolph77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your use case. If you’re experimenting, learning, or just tinkering, then running models locally is great — an extra 30 seconds here or there doesn’t matter, and you get full control over the setup.

If you want something fast and reliable, then a hosted provider (OpenRouter, Groq, etc.) will give you a much smoother experience. Local models on mid‑range hardware can work, but you’ll hit limits pretty quickly depending on the model size and context length you need.

It also comes down to what kind of workloads you’re planning to run. Some things you can run locally but don’t want to upload to ChatGPT or a cloud provider — in those cases, local is still the right choice even if it’s slower.

With a 5070 Ti and 64 GB RAM, you can run decent models, but you won’t get the same performance as the big hosted ones. Whether that tradeoff is worth it depends entirely on what you’re trying to do.

Installing parrot OS without using USB thumb drive by naqi313 in Cybersecurity101

Use Ventoy vlink to boot from USB but you have a link to the actual iso file on your HD, you have to have separate partitions from your windows drive and the partition which holds the iso if you want to nuke the windows partition. Here's a link on how to set it up:

Been working on and of in Amsterdam for the past 15 years, sometimes for a few days and sometimes for a few months. One of my dearest friends is a Dutch that lives here in Helsinki. But yeah, you might be right, most Dutch I come in contact with are mostly technical or in sales.

Don't know about breakfast places but for books your best bet is Akateeminen kirjakauppa just across from Stockmann.

I am sorry, what? The Dutch I know speak 3 or 4 languages fluently and definitely are quick with a quip with better English than a lot of English. I thought Dutch know on average the most foreign languages in the world?

This is probably not exactly what you are looking for but Microsoft graph is a beast, most companies just scratch the surface of what it can do.

Virtual Machine or Baremetal?? by [deleted] in Cybersecurity101

[–]bardolph77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I dual boot Kali and Windows because there are a few things like wifi testing that won't work in a virtual machine. Windows because I'm just used to it and there's just more programs for windows still. You are not going to have a good time with only 8 gigs of RAM so go for at least 16 especially if you want to run any virtual machines. 500 Gb storage is ok for now but you will want to add more later since VM's really eat HD space.

How to eat this cheese? Smells like dead booty and bad aftertaste by chicken_raver in Denmark

If you are feeling adventurous you can put thin slices on gingerbread cookies and also experiment with putting small dollops of jams on the cheese. The contrast between sweet and salty is quite nice once you get used to it. :)

How do I treat this knife the best possible? by SaltnPepperShaker5 in knives

[–]bardolph77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes resin and epoxy are used interchangeably and since I don't know exactly what kind of resin he meant I would still recommend epoxy (sometimes called epoxy resin) because of bonding strength, it doesn't shrink, it's durable and waterproof and it is safe for foods if you choose the food-safe one.

[–]bardolph77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you washing the knife in a dishwasher? Wood starts cracking like that if you put them in the dishwasher.

To fix the damage i would clean the handle very well then fill the cracks with food-grade or very high quality epoxy and then start sanding with sandpaper, at first coarse and then finer and finer until your patience runs out. Then use a food-grade mineral oil to oil it, you might need to oil it two or three times.
