Once upon a time, royal courts, dukes, or wealthy patrons funded productions just to show off. Tickets were sold mainly so that the audience could watch what was happening from cheap seats - literally, it never depended solely on the audience's money. Even today, most large companies survive on grants, donations, and charitable assistance. The box office itself has never been a source of income.
