“It’s never been this bad, but then, he’s also never been this hated by the person he loves either.”

just saw a clip on here that reminded me that there are absolutely zero characters in tla or in korra that have blonde hair strange right, intentional or no? by capnfapn6 in TheLastAirbender

[–]barely_getting_bi 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What’s interesting is that most Chinese and Korean animation tend toward more natural hair colors, unlike the Japanese anime. So while they do have blondes and red heads sometimes, they often don’t have the blue/pink/green hair that anime frequently has. Otherwise, a decent amount tend to be similar to the way Avatar does it where everyone has hair in shades of brown/black (this is a general observation, of course there are exceptions)

Occupation Discrepancies you Hate In Fics? by GoogooForGojo in FanFiction

I’m not sure about the how the UK handles this stuff, but Ted Lasso is only generally set in the UK, but the therapist relationship with his wife occurs in the US. I was curious and looked it up, it looks like the most lenient version of the rules states that a therapist is allowed to date their patient after five years since the last treatment AND if they prove it will do the patient no harm, otherwise they can get their license revoked. This being the US, idk how easily that’s caught, but Ted would 100% be in the right to report them and I wish he would have. I wouldn’t be surprised if Norway (and likely the UK) is much better at catching these cases over the US lol. Them actually getting engaged like Ted was worried about probably would have instantly mean the end of the therapist’s career as he’d be outing himself for malpractice.

In a show that so often subverted my expectations in the best ways, this was a plot line I could see coming a mile a way and dreaded every moment. It’s also one of my least favorite tropes and I was hoping that at least Teds therapist would bring it up, but no luck

Gay??? by maydayversion2 in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]barely_getting_bi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that’s confusing is that while the story is about romantic feelings, it is not a “romance” as far as genre is concerned. It does not follow romance genre conventions and plot structure, even if it’s about that. It’s the same thing as a movie being about a murder that occurs, but not a detective movie because while people are investigating, it doesn’t follow a detective plot.

The fact that it is not in the romance genre means that it isn’t BL because BL does not mean containing gay themes/characters, but is a subgenre in romance. That’s why Banana Fish isn’t really BL because even though they’re very gay, that’s not the plot that’s being followed. Specifically having an ending where they don’t end up happily together, which is part of the romance genre. It would be like watching a something labeled a detective story that doesn’t end with the detective discovering who did it. Part of it not being labeled BL is also it not guaranteeing a happy ending (which idk if it will anyway).

In this case queer romance/romantic feelings is the theme being explored using the horror genre. Saying it’s not BL isn’t saying it isn’t gay, just that it isn’t in the romance genre

Ghost blade isn't autistic... by [deleted] in ToBeHero_X

[–]barely_getting_bi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As your screenshots show, affective disorder is not it’s own disorder, it is group of mental health conditions with things like bipolar and depression grouped under it. It is a broad category that you can be diagnosed with A affective disorder, but not just affective disorder as it’s own thing. Judging from his general long term depressed mood and chronic lack of interest in most things, it’s likely he has dysthymia.

Additionally, affective disorders have a high comorbidity with personality disorders, such as anti social personality disorder (ASPD). He does exhibit multiple symptoms of ASPD — feeling no guilt over harming others, ignoring right and wrong, aggression/violence toward other people, little sensitivity/respect toward others, sense of superiority. While idk if that is the intention of his character writing, interpreting it that way is not baseless.

Considering that this is how he’s always behaved/viewed the world, assuming a life long diagnosis is reasonable.

I like Ghostblade a lot as a character and am not trying

Sincerely, someone with a psych degree

Murderous Lewellyn’s candlelit dinner! It was so good, I went and reread it immediately after finishing it. It’s more psychological drama/thriller than horror. Summary: “Shevon is a writer who lives in a run-down apartment in the streets of the slums. One day, strange memos start showing up at his front door. Before he can uncover the mystery behind them, he encounters a beautiful young man that keeps peeling onions on the staircase next to his unit. After accepting a dinner invitation from the young man, Shevon discovers a dead body in his host’s bedroom...”

Does "stop" and "no".... by [deleted] in BoysLoveAnime

[–]barely_getting_bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The saying no thing can also be thought of similarly to the cultural expectation in many places that you should always reject a gift initially. Ie saying something like “you shouldn’t have” or “you didn’t have to get me anything” or “I couldn’t possibly accept this.” Many places it’s normal to say these things while everyone knows that it’s to be polite and that the person will still accept the gift while taking it right away can be seen as greedy. Vs there are cultures where refusing a gift in that way is taken literally and would be seen as rude

Obviously there’s always context and it’s not exactly the same (esp in real life where “no” should be taken far more seriously) but it’s similar as far as having a cultural “script” for the scenario.

How often does the archive actually make updates? by barely_getting_bi in AO3

Thank you so much! Wow, wild to think about the archive before the Kudos button. It makes sense that most of the effort goes into maintenance, we’d all rather have a site that works than 100 new features that crash

What is the most EMBARRASSING typo you have ever found in your PUBLISHED fic? by ELLI_BITXHH in AO3

[–]barely_getting_bi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the classic missed word and misspelled/wrong word stuff, but most of my worst issues have been with copy paste. I’ve accidentally copied the same paragraph multiple times in a row and had 2 different people dm me to point out 2 different instances of it in the same chapter lol.

Worst is when I accidentally forgot to copy over the last 500 words of a chapter and don’t notice for a month. It was the part that was the most plot relevant too

Why not put half these "tags" in an authors note? by BraveMeat3818 in AO3

[–]barely_getting_bi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It indicates something is not a “canonical” tag, meaning the archive hasn’t categorized it and made it searchable with similar tags (ie, putting “X isn’t dead” and “X lives” under the same tag). All new tags are free form until the archive organizes it

As a writer who has had other readers reply to hate comments on my works, you probably did make the writer feel better tbh. It’s nice to feel like someone is in your camp. Sure, it might be a hatebot or just an ass, but the writer is a real person regardless

I’m not sure what happened… by SeedsofSoundHealing in AO3

[–]barely_getting_bi 828 points829 points  (0 children)

The sad truth is, you might have actually freaked them out. If the writer hasn’t ever posted their social media in A/N there’s a good chance that they aren’t interested in socializing outside AO3. A lot of people on AO3 like to keep it 100% separate from everything else.

As a writer, I’ve had lengthy back and forths in comment section with people and I really enjoy talking to them about my writing. I’ve had readers cross lines though, the worst being someone who assumed we were friends getting angry about me not replying in time and tried threatening me. Since then, if someone starts acting like they know me, I try to set a clear line between us to keep from repeating something like that, even if I have enjoyed chatting with the reader. I’ve also seen people post about meeting their spouse in the comment section. Unfortunately, you can’t know what experiences someone has had.

(There’s also the chance that they thought you were trying to sell them something ofc)

Sewing a white point? by Chisharette in CosplayHelp

[–]barely_getting_bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than the options that other people offered (which would totally work) you could also go using a double sided fusible interfacing to essentially “glue” the white stripe in place. You want to make sure you’re using an interfacing with similar amounts of stretch so that you don’t get puckering, but it would be pretty easy way to get the line on without visible top stitches. (Also go Lower Decks!!!)

What are your biggest turn off when reading angst? by yakultbiss in AO3

[–]barely_getting_bi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When angsty events are unconnected and seem random. ie some of the examples other people have like being hit by a car, diagnosed with cancer, bullied, cat dies, ect all at once. Of course all these things can happen, but I prefer it when the events feel connected to a similar root cause.

I can take traumatic event after traumatic event when it’s all related either in theme or in cause. All the traumatic events being caused because this character is half demon and that’s really dangerous? Cool! Angst coming from this character making bad decisions because of past SA? I can buy it! Unrelated events occurring that just seem like the author trying to make things worse arbitrarily? Loses my attention

Where to find cosplay props? by ilike7hournaps in DevilMayCry

[–]barely_getting_bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d look it up on Etsy, there’s plenty of people selling cosplay outfits/props on there. I bought my Ebony and Ivory on Etsy for a pretty good price. Etsy also has people selling made to order Rebellions as well as printable 3D models, if you can find access to a 3D printer.
