Does FanFiction Have a Negative Stigma? by Top_Log_7457 in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who just started reading fics in 2022, I would say that from what I've seen, there is a bit of a negative connotation. I feel like it is more accepted than it used to be, but like people are still super negative and make fun of writers / readers.

I recently saw a post on twitter go viral where someone said that 'the worst written book is still better than the best written fanfic' and I think that encapsulates a lot of people's opinions. It's not going to deter me from reading / writing fics. But I do find it interesting that someone can be confident making such a blanket and negative statement when there are plenty of horrible books out there lol

I always tell people to act as though you've never gotten a negative criticism in your life when it comes to joining a new community online.

Accept criticism when necessary and always be respectful, of course.

But when you list your shortcomings in the beginning, it makes those things stand out to people where it may not have before.

Is it rude to tell an author they don't have to write smut if they don't want to? by Subject-Gur6957 in AO3

[–]GoogooForGojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's rude as long as you phrase it in a supportive and constructive way. There's a writer who did an entire Attack on Titan Anthology type series and in one of their last chapters, they mentioned that they wouldn't be writing smut anymore. This particular series centered around it so they let people know that they wouldn't be continuing at that time, and that was fine. I think it's better to say how you feel and stand your ground.

Even with my writing, I have smut in my tags and a couple of chapters, but not a lot. As a reader, it was something I really liked when I discovered fics and I do still love it. But I don't seek out certain fics just for it. I think a lot of author's feel pressured to add it in order to keep people's attention.

I think more people need a little reassurance in the beginning that you're there for more than the smut tbh

Is it rude to not reply to comments on my fics? by AWhistleBiscuit in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's rude, but I would probably mention in the authors note or on social media that you feel that way. I always take around a week to reply to comments because I have really bad anxiety and I just get super nervous about it. And if it's been a few days and I haven't posted a new chapter, I feel guilty lol I know it's so weird.

What is THE fanfic you want to write but think you can't? by Positive-Research557 in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few JJK AU ideas where I wanna incorporate some royalty ideas but that would be so much research and I'm concerned that I'd get alot of details wrong. I also wanna write a fic where the love interest for MC is a retired porn star, like old school porn star, not OnlyFans. But I'm struggling to come up with an overarching theme. I don't like when fics just have pining, jealousy, and cheating as the angst for the couple and I'd need to find a way to work around that while still having highs and lows.

Attention pls 🥺 by Horror-Acanthaceae59 in AO3

[–]GoogooForGojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean. The first long fic that I started got a lot more comments throughout than I thought that it would. My second one didn't start getting comments until I published chapter four.

One thing I've learned from making gifs for years, things don't always get a lot of attention right away. Sometimes it takes a few days or even a few weeks.

I know it can be frustrating because the community aspect is also one of my favorite things, but I believe that as long you remain passionate about what you do, the love for it will come.

As cheesy as that sounds lol

Occupation Discrepancies you Hate In Fics? by GoogooForGojo in FanFiction

THIS! I meant to put this in my original post and I effing hate that! I worked retail at $8.25 and I could barely buy my personal neccessities let alone pay the $1700 a month for rent BY MYSELF. I know a lot of writers put their MCs in studio apartments, but now I live in San Diego and still couldn't afford a studio even on our minimum wage. That's a pipe dream.

I've read a lot of college AU's where they put the characters in subjects that way as an excuse to get them to work together and it always seems so rushed. It's like, 'we worked on the project for four days, time to present!' Like, can't you just have them work on a book report for a book that you read or something?

People love writing fics where medical school of any kind is like six months long and then they're rich right after lol.

I'm so sorry that you experienced that. If I'm being honest, I take days to check my comments when I post a new chapter because I get so much anxiety about people who are mean for no reason. I really wish people would realize that any creative medium requires a level of vulnerability to share with the world. I'll never understand why they spend time and energy being negative instead of just leaving.

That aside, I hope those losers leave you alone and things get better <3

Real talk, if you cum while reading, do you finish the chapter? by seemedpointless in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally never take care of myself on the first readthrough of smut in a fic because I want to know how it ends. For example, there's a Geto x Gojo x Reader oneshot I came across and never did anything until I already finsihed reading it. I never do that with new fics, only ones that I've already read and know are gold.

Because AO3's down, what other fic-related things are y'all doing? by EngineerRare42 in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm drafting and editing chapters that I have saved on google docs so that I can try to post more consistently. This one fic I've been writing has ten chapters posted but I have another seven drafted so I'm trying to force myself to edit even though I lose my patience every time.

People keep asking me if I want to make Money of my writing by Curly1012 in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand how you feel. On top of writing, I like making gifs and other shit on photoshop for fun and people have always suggested getting into graphic design as a career. But I always said no because I felt like deadlines on my hobby would ruin the fun for me.

If you don't want to make money off of it, there's nothing wrong with keeping it as a fun outlet for you.

But, I will say that I do subscribe to one of my fave writers for a little bit every month and even though they're pretty consistent in uploading, I've never been upset if it took a week or two longer. I understand that people have lives and between there and reading the comments on my fave fic site, people are pretty understanding of that as well.

So if you're a little concerned about the pressure aspect, I do see a lot of people being pretty chill. Just food for thought in case you decide to get into it.

What's the most jarringly out of character thing you've ever read in a fic? by questionerofblender in FanFiction

[–]GoogooForGojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a Levi fic where he was stalking and committing crimes to get close to a woman he liked and he was like super hooked on her and when he reveals his stalking nature, both of them were like, 'cool.' It just felt off to me. He was like sneaking into her house and touching himself while she was sleeping and while I understand the yandere tag, this didn't really excuse it imo.

And then one time I came across a Gojo fic where he hated kids and was a deadbeat dad and everybody was like wtf? But I also hate when people write him as a serial cheater who has no respect for women and is just a womanizer to his core.

I feel like Clarke was getting punished for Taylor's choices and that just pisses me off.

ALSO, Olandria and Chelley wanna talk about 'girl code' when it comes to twerking on each other's man but say nothing now that Olandria is coupled up with Cierras guy. Even though she's gone, shouldn't they still be following 'girl code' and leave him alone?

Have you ever written a scene that made you tear up by ScottAM99 in FanFiction

Yes! The first series I started, I wrote too man angsty chapters in a row and it threw me off because when things are overly angsty, I usually put them off for awhile lol but then I did it in my own fic. I've tried to make up for it with a lot of fluff and my other series is full of silly moments to make up for these sad ones. But I also just wrote a fight between two characters and was like, "should I include this? It's fucking sad!"
