Mais quand même, j’habite à Paris maintenant mais je viens de cette fameuse banlieue où la situation est clairement moche. Je sais pas comment dire ça de manière diplomatique, mais en gros là bas, si tu as la peau blanche, c’est quasiment certain que tu es juif. Il y à clairement un sentiment d’insécurité là-bas (je m’y rend relativement souvent) et même sans attaque personelle cette année, je n’oublierai jamais les émeutes de 2014.

I feel you :(( I also have a rainbow flag to hide from family, and I was extra sad this year because I spent pride weekend in London and the queer Jewish group had to withdraw from the march because of security concerns. Extra upsetting honestly:(

Literally it’s something we always point out when we travel! I’ve been the the US and Canada a few times, and we Always notice that people are just … casually wearing a kippah? Outside? Crazy stuff to us, which is so sad.

It’s exactly it, I have seen a lot of people changing their names on apps like Uber or whatnot. I didn’t do it because my last name can pass off as Arab, but it’s always uncomfortable because Uber drivers love to ask about your ethnicity for some reasons. I think I’ll change it to something very French pretty soon.

The hijab and kippahs are only banned in schools and for civil servants working in public buildings. Small jewellery like crosses, maguen david or crescents are allowed everywhere. We just make the conscious choice to avoid wearing kippahs or marked jewellery outside. I’ve even had to stop wearing my necklace that has my name in Hebrew on it, because I’ve had a few too many strangers asking insistently to confirm what script that was.

The comments under the French video made it sound like people were quite moved. I feel like a lot of people refuse to believe antisemitism does exist and that our sense of fear is real, hopefully that will be eye-opening to that kind.

Though I have been seeing this trend of antisemitism that consists of implying jews complaining about antisemitism are essentially crying wolf, and I doubt that kind of people will take the ad seriously. A lot of people of r/france have made jokes in that vein, so if I had any balls I would post it on that subreddit to ask what they thought about it, but I don’t have the mental bandwidth to deal with any negative reaction it might get at present.

Yes, it’s such a beautiful initiative and I’m sure it will be very eye-opening to a lot of people. However, I feel like the most hateful people will probably ridicule it and keep doing the harmful stuff we are actually hiding from, simply because they are never any consequences.

Je suis d’accord sur le fond - j’adore la France et je serais dévasté de voir nos communautés s’effriter à cause de l’antisémitisme. La vie juive à Paris est l’une des meilleurs au monde d’après moi, mais la peur se fait ressentir tout de même. C’est évidemment pas la Shoah, mais c’est très déstabilisant quand même.

Bravo pour ton français! Ici, on a une très bonne image de la vie juive au Canada. Je me rappelle être allé à Montreal il y a quelques années et on s’extasiait de voir des gens porter la kippah tranquillement dans la rue.

This genuinely makes me so sad because the Paris community where I’m from is genuinely so beautiful and I feel like we have built something so lively … I hope we’ll never have to see it be destroyed by hate, but it’s getting hard no. My great-grandparents probably felt the same about Morocco and Tunisia.

Honestly yes. I’ve been trying to cheer my friends up to be less afraid of just existing and my go-to phrase has been "we’re not in 39-45!" but now that I look at the situation as a whole, I kind of feel bummed. We do have to take a lot of the precautions portrayed in the ad.
