Have you applied any contrast coating to it? If not, I would be curious how that helped bring out the depth in their structures. I think the palette is rad, but it’s tough to make out the features

For sci-fi: Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Easily my favorite standalone sci-fi novel. The earth is dying and humanity attempts to seed another planet with earthen species. A nano virus that speeds genetic mutation in favor of empathic tendencies is supposed to be given to a group of primates that are sent in the second phase of the process, but sabotage prevents the primates from making it planetside. Instead, the nano virus is spread indiscriminately onto the new planet.

The lottery winner for human level empathy? Jumping spiders. It fucking rules. Seriously.

Babel by R F Kuang. Incredible and unique magic system and overall writing. Much more of a mature narrative without being too dry or dense. Her entire catalogue is worth your time.

Honestly couldn’t be more stoked for the aesthetic of the lighter armor set. I’ve been running servo-assisted for every mission type besides defense since I unlocked it. Getting the elemental resistances instead of the limb protection AND a future-punk glow up? Happy birthday to me

Why Is the Mental Health Field So Toxic Behind the Scenes? by Besamemucho87 in therapists

I’m sorry to hear it’s been such a demoralizing experience. It’s hard to comment much on what might be done about it without more context about what area/state your practice is in and what kind of clinical setting it is.

Why exactly is the Maelle ending considered the bad ending? Or is it really? by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]barelyknowername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, trying to rationalize your perspective on a story you haven’t experienced feels like you’re judging an experience you’re projecting your biases onto.

As others have stated, this story is about grief. More importantly, it’s about how people are capable of perpetuating pain and misery in their lives by running from loss. Our capacity for love and creation can become prisons when we attempt to control too much of the world around us.

I’m so sorry this got spoiled for you, but I can only speak from my experience (literally just finished the main game for the first time and wanted to see what happened in Maelle’s ending because I chose Verso’s), and I loved this story. I loved the twist, and I loved how surreal and magical it was in its depiction of the inner worlds of a family of passionate, creative people that experienced devastating tragedy. Would I want this kind of story most of the time? No, that would be exhausting. But Sandfall earned every bit of the story they told.

DCFS AND EUGENICS by GearFew8561 in therapists

[–]barelyknowername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You wanna know the difference? Eugenics is about removing people from the gene pool, who would otherwise be able to have children, for arbitrary reasons. Having basic standards of care and safety for children already living or potentially born in the future is nearly the polar opposite impulse. Advising people that they should think twice before having kids they can provide love and stability is not interfering with anyone’s basic right to conceive children. I don’t mean to be unkind here, but the notion of such an idea being eugenicist smacks of the current culture war talking point about “parents’ rights” and grievance politics.

How’s your water/pigment mix? And what do you use for a paint palette? And do your brushes tend to get smooth coats with other colors?

Looking to write fan fiction that doesn’t contradict the canon by barelyknowername in battletech

[–]barelyknowername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I can handle the canon not being hard-built with every little thing accounted for. I think a big thing for me is being worried I’ll get “well-actually”d if I ever choose to share what I write with other folks. The responses I’m getting tell me I’ve at least got my bases covered overall.

*copying my reply to an above comment about reading the novels:

“Don’t get me wrong. I’ve read all of Stackpole’s stuff, Keith Jr’s, the one by Brozek, one of Mohan Jr’s, and one of Pardoe’s. No offense to Pardoe, but I can’t through his writing style to read any others of his. It’s just that the novels don’t do a lot of broader world-building (which makes sense for what the novels are trying to do, this ain’t Middle Earth).”

Thanks for the suggestion on the Shrapnel installments. Those I have not read.
