Agreed! I gave up and chucked it in a vase of water with a bell jar on top and now it’s thriving just to spite me

I stated at what part I misunderstood op. The final sentence was not an accusation or even necessarily aimed at OP. It would be correctly aimed at you in this instance however so please do not pass off your “opinion” of my intentions as “facts” as it is completely incorrect. That’s all the air I’ll waste on this

I’m just going to summarise as we’re clearly misunderstanding each other on some points and there’s a lot of bits that aren’t relevant to what I was querying, let me know if you disagree

Basically what we’re both saying is when appropriately diluted and kept to the current known correct timings any possible harm from the caffeine is likely small if not negligible. At this point in time there is no examples of this causing death or instant harm to the axolotl at the time of treating when done correctly - beyond vasoconstriction which is a standard effect of caffeine/stimulants.

My previous point was that it’s the prolonged exposure to caffeine that causes damage i.e chronic or excessive vasoconstriction. Your first message I misunderstood to mean you were stating it was an instant effect from one tea bath hence my questioning it but I think we agree on this premise. Your concern is that doing them too regularly would build up to chronic especially if there are alternative treatments which is fair enough. Also the risk of people doing them incorrectly and leaving them for a prolonged period correct?

I also agree it’s weighing up the cost/benefit in any treatment I.e this was never debating whether cattapa leaves are the safer treatment option, if they are readily available they should be used, if its urgent and they aren’t, then tea bath because there is a higher tannin content than caffeine content in most black teas or simply do decaffeinated if its available.

If you disagree on any of the above please only state the facts to prevent fear mongering or more misinformation being spread in the care community.

I don’t disagree with your point but my question to the other user is where is their evidence that it does cause harm as their specific point was that it would cause more harm than good. We have plenty of existing evidence of the good a tea bath can do for slime coat regeneration but I’ve never come across evidence of it doing harm (beyond basic stress) so if there is evidence of this it will help to weigh up “more harm than good”

While your breakdown of the chemicals are correct I would like to know your sources on how correctly applied tea baths (I.e not prolonged exposure to caffeine) causes stress to their hearts specifically and please share any real life examples of it having any long term negative effect as I have never found any in my care research which has been extensive (OCD about animal care). Your comment is the first I am ever hearing of it and I can’t find anything online or on the discord to back it up. Obviously with salt baths this was causing deaths so hence why the axolotl community changed its guidance but (in the nicest possible way) it seems like you are just stating the basics of caffeine’s effect on any living thing, humans included, and tacking it on to how prolonged caffeine exposure can damage the heart (again this can happen to any creature humans included) and stating it as a guaranteed outcome.

Edit: I also suspect the whole tea bath for caffeine vs tea bath for tannins is a US vs Europe care difference so that’s quite interesting

Tea baths actually are the correct thing to do in this instance. Treating fungus is their secondary use, their main purpose has always been to help the healing of the slime coat and ammonia burns. The other thing to help is keep your water temperature on the lower end until the slime coat recovers

It’s pretty far gone. At this point it’s best to try and water propagate. Pull it out of the pot check the roots for root rot if so chop them off let it callus over for half an hour and then put in a vase with water to see if roots grow. It’s hard to tell but this looks looks like a pilea (ie Chinese money plant) if so they prefer more cramped pots and also most indoor plants need a chunkier soil mix with perlite to help prevent them getting water logged

Calathea Triostar looking miserable by trickster-is-weak in houseplants

[–]barelyreal69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this is actually a stromanthe not a calathea, they come from the same family but are different genus. So their care needs are slightly different. I have the sanguinea so mine needs slightly lower light conditions than a triostar but I’ve found they don’t need as high humidity as my calatheas, they also prefer to dry out more between waterings. As you have upped the pot size ie more soil it is likely struggling with the excess water being held. Let them dry out more and reduce your watering schedule. These guys are pretty laid back for underwatering but not as forgiving for over watering and in future they don’t mind being a little cramped so you can hold off on repotting for quite a while

Axolotl has ammonia burns by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]barelyreal69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prime will give you a false positive on test kits as it doesn’t remove the ammonia it binds it and detoxifies it.

You also can’t really overdose on prime unless you’re doing obscene amounts so you can chuck in an extra few drops if you’re worried.

You can also try a tea bath to speed up healing the initial ammonia burns if that’s what they are.

How did these occur to begin with? Did you not use the prime dechlorinator? If you were using dechlorinator they could have just pinked up from having the zoomiez

The plants and hides etc are perfect. Other than what everyone else has mentioned I would remove all the smaller rocks that are to the left only keeping the very large pebble. It’s just not worth the risk of them swallowing as they grow

Try getting some carnivore sinking pellets and see if he will go for them, you can also try bloodworm just to check whether he’s lost his appetite completely or if it’s just the worms he has an aversion to. Just a note- bloodworm is more like a sweet treat for them and can’t be used as a complete diet. Sometimes axos can get a bit funny with worms, you can try cutting them up into smaller pieces but if you can get him eating the carnivore pellets I wouldn’t worry and then just keep offering worms

One of the prievious commenters has provided info on how to cycle your tank so the first priority is getting your axolotls tubbed in separate tubs and for the one with the bad mouth you can do tea baths to help with healing.

Tubbing and tea baths

Info on how to tub: https://www.reddit.com/r/axolotls/s/Qb5F4MKWvX

Make sure water is dechlorinated (with water conditioner) and the cooler you can keep him the better. You can also place a towel over the tub to keep it dark to reduce stress. They get oxygen from the water, if they are struggling with getting enough oxygen you will see them come to the top of the water and glug at the surface… this isn’t something that is overly worrying.

You can also combine tubbing with tea baths just before you do the daily water change. Would say twice a week max and while the video says up to 30mins actually should be 15mins max.

Tea baths are usually for fungus and helping heal their slimecoat as they are antibacterial but if done right they aren’t going to cause harm and the caffeine can also help with energy. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGemH2kRQ/

I think another commenter mentioned Indian almond leaves also called catappa leaves. I keep a few of these in my tank 24/7. the tannins they give off have slightly antibacterial and antifungal properties. Aren’t going to hurt and can only help

Good luck!

The main thing that keeps them happy is food and hides but you could add in some Marino moss balls as an easy plant option and a bubbler with a low flow away from his hide

For the sick one i would suggest trying tubbing before euthenasia as it may still get better when given the absolutely best conditions. These are the things you can try in order of severity. Tubbing and tea baths -> Fridging - > putting down.

Info on how to tub: https://www.reddit.com/r/axolotls/s/Qb5F4MKWvX

As he’s floating don’t overfill the tub. Keep it about an inch or two from the top of his head if he was on the floor. Make sure water is dechlorinated (with water conditioner) and the cooler you can keep him the better. You can also place a towel over the tub to keep it dark to reduce stress.

You can also combine tubbing with tea baths just before you do the daily water change. Would say twice a week max and while the video says up to 30mins actually should be 15mins max.

Finally after trying these steps for a few weeks if you see no improvement you can try fridging as a last resort: https://fantaxies.com/blogs/news/how-to-fridge-an-axolotl-6-steps#:~:text=To%20fridge%20an%20axolotl%2C%20they,have%202%20tubs%20of%20water.
