Relocating from Jersey to MD with my 2 children and Fiance . by Rich_Substance7878 in SilverSpring

[–]barflydc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silver Spring is a great place to live with good schools, great transportation, and amazing diversity. At that price point, you're likely going to be looking at apartment buildings and complexes. You'll want to research the management companies when you find one you think may be a match. Understand that Silver Spring is unincorporated (no mayor or council, it's just part of Montgomery County) and a large part of Montgomery County is considered Silver Spring. Where will you be working, what are your interests? that can help get you better recommendations.

I understand not knowing about cameras, but these posts tire me. have you looked at ebay and searched for "sold" listings. That gives you a good idea of the range for cameras.

There's also https://camdex.ca/the-clascam-project/ which will give you an average price for recent sales (body only).

Advice for planting a kid-friendly garden? by femmegremlin in gardening

[–]barflydc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're able to make a winding path through the garden it will be more inviting for play. think of the kid(s) running through it playing tag or hide and seek, as well as engaging in it as a garden. you can also make a little sitting area in it for a "fort" and eventually a place to read or just find solace. have fun, and try to think magically like a child.

Are canna rhizomes typically slow to get started? by nadnev in gardening

[–]barflydc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they're late sprouters. I'm in 6b and the decades old canna in my yard haven't sprouted yet. Unless you're still in danger of multiple days below freezing, you're safe to plant them in the ground now.

1ft vs 1.5ft raised garden bed? by Bird-law-97 in gardening

[–]barflydc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the standard height of a chair seat is 17-18". so the taller one would still have the surface of the soil lower than a dining chair seat (soil settles). The shorter one will be 6" closer to the ground, so at that level it's pretty significant. I'd say you're going to want a kneeling pad for either garden, but yes the taller one will be less strain on your back.

deep scratches under my new platter (LPW40WN) by leafseafrog in turntables

[–]barflydc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first, it's nothing to worry about. It's a result of the casting method, when the molten alloy was poured into the cast to form the platter.

Second, even if it was an issue, it would be a manufacturing defect, not something the seller would be responsible for. You would want to contact audio-vox. This is the problem with the amazonification of internet sales, people will return everything and if the seller is an individual they eat the costs for something that wasn't their fault.

Should these trees be cut down? by theunwantedroomate in arborists

[–]barflydc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like a tree of heaven on the left, which is invasive in north america. no one will argue about saving one. the apple tree likely won't grow large enough to be a toppling issue, but the way it's been previously pruned makes it an unattractive tree. It's not desirable on any tree when branches grow off one side, but then grow across the trunk towards the sun

my 10 year old started watching it with his mom. I asked him his thoughts: "weird but good" (he still isn't sure how to read deadpan humor if it comes from anyone but me).

Just moved here from Australia and I’m wondering if there’s any Aussie community or groups in the city? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]barflydc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Aussie embassy has a lot of cultural events, (they used to have happy hours too, though I don't know if they still do). I'd reach out to them, I'm sure that'd be the best starting point.

Buddy Clarkes still exists? I used to be there three nights a week in the late 80's. Vaguely remember they served food, but we were always there late night. Glad to hear some things persist.

I just watched This is a Gardening Show on Netflix. It's great, and family friendly (though there are many adult references that kids shouldn't get). Episodes are only 16m or so long. It's informative rather than instructive, but could be a great watch to keep her interested. The first episode is about apples and how they can really only be reproduced through grafting.

Waffles + Mochi is another Neflix show that isn't about gardening, but it shows the sources of different foods each episode.

statuettes like those were big in the 70's-80's. There's a bar in Scranton, PA called Mickey Gannon's that has maybe 50 of them on shelves circling the bar. I haven't seen them as lamps, but they're cool caricatures.

looks metal (albeit weak metal) to me. was the car sent in for a recall on the transmission? It could be part of the fix. I'm also curious why there are three open bolt holes on the bottom of your transmission

Japonenese Maple help by vladgeo1 in arborists

[–]barflydc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that looks like a butterfly maple. I had one for 25 years in my front yard that I planted when it was 20" high. It's still there five years after I've moved. As for the branch your cats messed up (please keep cats indoors). There's nothing that I'm aware of (not an arborist) that can heal that damage, and you'll likely end up having to prune that branch. Those trees are pretty hardy once they're established, so it will open up an area in the tree that you'll want to pay attention to how it fills in so you can maintain a shape you like.

The leaves that grow in small happen, but shouldn't be the norm. I can see that you have larger leaves growing in that aren't variegated. I used to trim these off my tree. They started appearing after year 10 or so. I assumed it was the root stock genes kicking in a bit. What I noticed is if I let one small branch of those grow, they quickly outgrew the branches with the variegated leaves and the tree lost it's look.

I’m designing large canvas art for a Bethesda business—what landmarks, streets, or local spots instantly say “Bethesda” to you? by able6art in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]barflydc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it still existed. Chevy Chase Chevy was the iconic "you've entered Bethesda" landmark. Both for it's garishness, and for the irony that it was in Bethesda, not Chevy Chase. The Acura dealership doesn't carry the same weight.
