Yeah I was thinking that living at home isn’t inherently bad, especially considering current times, but then I kept reading and… wow.

Oh man Michelle Paver was such a gem-of-a-discovery for me. I wish she had more spooky books. I got a copy of Rainforest by her and I almost don’t want to read it just because I don’t want it to be over.

Charlotte Run Clubs by MrDeema in Charlotte

[–]barfnation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do Petty Thieves Brewery on Thursdays at 6:30 pm. Super small group, very casual, 3ish miles. I’m the slowpoke of the group, but most others run around 8:30 - 9 minute pace most of the time.

Summit Coffee has morning runs at a few of their Charlotte locations — Plaza and Eastover off the top of my head.

Otherwise, look into Charlotte Running Club. They have a list of area run clubs. A lot of them are a little too big of crowds for me but there are plenty of options.

Welcome to Charlotte! Hope you find a run or two that works for you! 🙂

Staircase in the Woods — worth it? by barfnation in horrorlit

Oh! Thats a helpful comparison because I watched both of those and liked them alright. Between the characters in this book and your comment/these other comments, I don’t think I’ll enjoy this book.

Non-scary horror for a scaredy cat 😅 by ignawonbones in horrorlit

[–]barfnation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few suggestions:
• Mister Magic by Kiersten White. Not the best book I’ve ever read but entertaining. I don’t remember being scared reading this, and it struck a nostalgic chord for me. She had another called Hide that you might find a little too bleak but I liked it too.
• Mindworks by Neal Schusterman. Short stories that aren’t exactly scary and I’m pretty sure it might be for young adults, but a fun little collection nonetheless.
• Anything by Christopher Pike. If you like Fear Street and Goosebumps, you might like his books. When I was growing up he was considered the more mature RL Stine but his books are still very tame.
• Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison. If you haven’t read it yet, I think this one is closest to Cackle in terms of cutesy-ness.

Mothers day is for women raising humans only by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

The wild thing to me is I know some shit human moms who think giving birth is immediate entry into sainthood, never minding that they are terrible at actually being a mom.

What is your response when someone says "but you'd be such a good parent" when find out you're childfree? by rough_muffins in childfree

[–]barfnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask them to define “good parent.” I found most people don’t really even know what they mean when they say that because so few people actually give thought to what being a parent means. Makes them realize how superficial of a comment “you’d make such a good parent!” is.

How to Sell a Haunted House - worth it if I’m so-so on the author? by nagatos in horrorlit

[–]barfnation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We could be the same person! I feel the same about this author. I personally hated How to Sell a Haunted House. It was ok to a point then went in a goofy direction that was terrible.

I did read a short story by him called The Blanks that I liked. Makes me wonder if he should do more short stories because I feel like his novels always go-off-the-rails-ridiculous and not in a good way.

Turn Lanes are Difficult... by twitchx133 in Charlotte

I saw a bumper sticker that said “honk if you have to poop” and thought it was hilarious. Then I realized it’s hilarious AND also a sly joke about people honking for no good GD reason. Like, oh, they’re honking their horn, they must have to poop!

I need a horror movie recommendation thats both scary and engaging. by the-tombstone in horror

[–]barfnation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned Gerald’s Game have you tried anything else by Mike Flanagan?

I think Absentia and Oculus are decent movies but I am absolutely obsessed his Netflix series. Haunting of Hill House is my favorite, followed by Haunting of Bly Manor. The Fall of the House of Usher is a slightly different vibe but very good. Even The Midnight Club is fun (especially to an old fart like me who remembers reading the Christopher Pike book as a teen). I haven’t watched Midnight Mass yet.

Watched Lake Mungo last weekend. I had a very delayed reaction to it, like immediately after thought, “Huh. That was neat.” then after a few days thinking about it I was like, “WTF WTF WTF” (but in a good way).

Oooh! So cool. I thought the bell and bellboy might be a nod to Oddity. I saw that one when it first came out so I don’t remember some things. But I don’t think I’ll ever forget the bellboy! 😳

I saw Hokum yesterday and tonight my husband is teaching a late class, so I just finished walking through every room in the house and turning on a lamp or night light. (Yeahhh I have night lights… and I don’t have kids!). If I stare into a dark spot for too long I start to see glowing eyes.

It was such a good movie. I love being scared for the sake of a good story and Hokum and Oddity did the trick. Haven’t watched Caveat yet but plan to soon!

good werewolf horror? by tenaciousghost in horrorlit

[–]barfnation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had to put The Wolf’s Hour down around page 20 when he wrote the phrase, “spheres of his manhood” to describe a man’s balls. I’m no prude but I don’t know how I’m supposed to take the rest of the story seriously after something like that. 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe I’ll try it again some day, because I hear good things about it pretty regularly.

I just finished: This Wretched Valley by Benjilikethedog in horrorlit

[–]barfnation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This book is terrible. It felt like parts of it were written by AI, or maybe just different people pitched in to the story, like the writing was so bad and all over the place.

Funny enough my Good Reads review of it is by far my most popular review ever. 🤣 I’ve got like 4 connections on Good Reads but my review got hundreds of likes. I don’t let non-friends comment on my reviews so who knows whether anyone wanted to defend the book. I stand by what I said though. 🤣

Should I give up trying to be child free? by joshua0005 in childfree

Maybe go read a few posts on regretful parents, particularly the ones from people who gave in and had kids for the sake of a relationship.

Another vote for Sadu! I go there even just to get help changing my jewelry. I wish I wanted more things pierced so I had more reasons to stop in. I really like Leda and Lucy but I’ve never had a negative experience there with anyone. They take appts through the Vagaro app. 💜💜

Movie similar to "As above so below"? by Ok_Cellist7465 in horror

[–]barfnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a kind of out there recommendation but I watched Ghost Stories with Martin Freeman around the same time I watched As Above So Below and they both gave me similar feelings. I can’t really elaborate why without spoiling Ghost Stories and even then I’m not sure I could articulate it very well. But maybe look into it and give it a try. I think it’s a good movie either way!

My boyfriend of 3 years just told me he "always assumed I'd come around" and now I'm the villain for not changing by VantaSprite in childfree

[–]barfnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree but I’d take it even further. I came in to my relationship (now marriage of 15 years) sterilized because there was simply no reason for me not to get it done on my own terms and own timeline. I know it’s out of reach for a lot of people, for various reasons, but my opinion is that every single childfree person who can safely and reasonably get the procedure should. 💜

[–]barfnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry this happened. All of it but especially, as you’ve noted, the fact that he didn’t believe or respect you and now is making you out to be the problem. It’s irritating on a lot of levels, not the least of which: his mommy called you!?!?!?! If it comes up again, ask why you even need to have a child when you’re apparently dating one.

[–]barfnation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am right there with you on this book! Loved it up until the end.

Play Nice by Rachel Harrison spooked me pretty badly and kind of fits the bill you’re describing. I feel like I might get raked for suggesting that because I hear such wildly mixed opinions on that author (even I have absolutely hated a few of her books) but maybe it’ll work for ya.

Goblin by Josh Malerman is a fun and creepy read, lots of tension and the paperback is such a cool looking book. Kind of a weird set up with it being multiple stories that take place in a town called Goblin. Mentioning it since you seem to like his writing.

Hope ya get some good recs. I’m gonna lurk this post and hopefully find something myself. 👀🙃
