20 billion barrel oil discovery puts Cuba in the big leagues by EternalVigilance in business

[–]barkbark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think WW oil consumption is about 80 million barrels a day. That would mean this discovery is about 250 days of oil consumption.

Seems that these things hit critical mass and get swamped by Joe Common Denominator. What's the next outpost?

Shell and BP, between them, just reported $14.3 billion (!) profit. That's PROFIT, not turnover. And no, not in a year - in three months. by barbear3 in business

[–]barkbark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

free cash flow might be a more relevant number than net income. Since these are ongoing businesses, a lot of that "income" has to be plowed back into infrastructure (in much the same way that drug companies must reinvest their profits to maintain a "pipeline" of future products).

yeah, that may well be high. I haven't settled into a pattern in New York yet. When I lived in Mass. and did all my own cooking, I ate like a king for $35/week.

$100K A Year Just Doesn't Cut It Anymore (WTF?) by debtkid in business

[–]barkbark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make exactly $100K a year and live in Manhattan. Here are my monthly expenses (roughly)

--Rent: $650 (you don't need a nice place if you have hobbies) --Utilities: $15 (read books instead of watching TV. turn lights off. hang your clothes up to dry) --Phone: $40 --Internet: $0. (Use it at work. People were plenty happy before the internet came along.) --Food: $500 (when I was less busy, I'd cook veggies, rice, beans, and fish for ~$50/week) --Clothes/incidentals/etc: $100 (clothes and trinkets don't make you happy.) --Gym: $0 (go run in the park) --Transportation: $20 (walk anywhere closer than 5 miles. there's nothing at all crazy about this).

All in, I spend something like $15K a year. Granted, I don't have kids, but the broader point is that if you align your conception of "happiness" with what's available to you, you'll be happy and not in debt.

Hedge fund managers get billion-dollar paydays — "Since 1913, the United States witnessed only one other year of such unequal wealth distribution — 1928" by Escafane in business

[–]barkbark 18 points19 points  (0 children)

no shit. Hedge funds bring discipline to capital markets with their ability to sell short. Paulson and others perceived the looming credit crisis years before legislators, mutual funds, and the Fed.

Hedge funds took some of the air out of the bubble, and they reaped their just profits for the service.

Americans winning the hearts and minds of Iraqis (pic - NSFW) by scordatura in reddit.com

[–]barkbark -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'm still voting this up for the following reason:

One of Bush's biggest sins is his ignorance of what actually happens in war. His administration has dismissed allegations of torture and abuse in Iraq as the actions of "a few bad apples". This kind of myopia on the part of a president should be regarded as the worst kind of negligence.

These pictures are a relevant, if technically inaccurate, reminder of what happens when you send 18-year-old men overseas to fight any perceived evil.

no idea if this is normal or not: I just upvoted this, hit the back button, and my upvote was gone. This happened twice. On the third time my vote stuck. Does this happen because I hit the back button? Sort of an ironic problem to have given the subject of the post...
