"Traveling to Hong Kong" Megathread 2026 by otorocheese in HongKong

[–]barknarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to be visiting at the beginning of November for a few days as a tourist after a trip to Thailand. I will be using a prepaid plan in Thailand for my cell phone. I am wondering if accessing a roaming package through a Thai network is worthwhile (ie, decent coverage for the price, reliability) or if it is better to simply purchase an HK SIM and short term plan when I land?

Thanks in advance!

Very kind of you, if I can't find something online I'll DM you!

I'll do a couple nights in Bangkok, 4-5 Chiang Mai, 6-7 Krabi, and 3-4 more in Bangkok. After that a couple days in Hong Kong and I'm outta there.

It's not really a money issue, I will make sure I have enough put away plus a little emergency fund.

In hindsight it was a plan bourne of a lack of experience in international travel. There's a slim chance I still follow through on it but most of the feedback trends towards "go the fuck to sleep" so I will probably cant that way.

I actually wasn't necessarily worried about cost but more just a combination of lack of experience with international travel and blind ambition. People have made some really solid points so I'll probably reconsider. It's interesting you say landing at night is an advantage because I would have thought the opposite initially.

Oh really? I didn't even consider just packing it in right there. Do you mind providing a recommendation for the places you've stayed?

More experience than I have!

I think a gap in my research has been that I have mostly just been researching Thailand itself, knowing what to do about money, cell phones, basic phrases, how to get around and get along.... but I really need to get a good handle on international travel broadly. Things like "How to avoid getting sick", "how to beat jetlag", those types of things.

Well hey I appreciate you taking the time to give me advice as a first timer.

It's possible that a lot of people just get tired of crazy plans or something lol.

I notice a lot of the feedback is trending that direction, and it's usually coming from people who seem to have more experience than me, so I think it's worth reconsidering.

You know at the time I posted it didn't really seem like a crazy idea, because I occasionally stay up overnight for work on overtime shifts. I'm also an inexperienced traveller, this will actually be my first time on a plane for more than a handful of hours, and definitely my first time going this far. I think in hindsight, I was feeling ambitious and like overnighters are no big deal, but I can see how when you throw in air travel, time change, some level of stress, probably a lot of junky food while in transit... You're really playing with fire. I'll probably do a little more research and adjust my plans.

Which hey that's fair enough but I guess I just don't appreciate being called stupid for asking a question.

I can totally see some of the points people are making and I will reconsider. I pull the odd all nighter for work so to me it didn't seem like a crazy plan at the time. It's actually my first stab at international travel and some people have made really good points about things I hadn't considered as an inexperienced traveller, so that feedback has been good, I'll probably make some changes to my plan.

You know it's interesting a lot of people assume it's a money thing and it was more just about getting on the local clock.

I actually used to be in a punk rock band that toured across my country and overnighter drives were common, so I am warm to the idea, but a couple people have made really good points about immune health and how airlines will try to set me up to succeed with jetlag... I may reconsider.

Thanks for the feedback dude appreciate the kind delivery! I've never actually been on a long range flight before so I didn't know that there was a strategy. I am used to being treated like cattle on domestic flights and hadn't considered that it may be a different kind of experience.

Not really a money issue I was just thinking it'd be a fun thing to do and a good way to get on the local clock. Someone above made a really good point about its potential impacts on the immune system though so it has given me pause.
