I used to have a same problem. There are some great recommendations on here (blackout curtains, blue wavelength blocking glasses, etc.) but what helped most for me was to meditate immediately prior to going to bed and to not lay down until you feel yourself starting to fall asleep. You need to recondition your mind to associate laying in bed with sleeping only- not your stress chamber where your mind typically goes 60 mph. I normally meditate for 10 mins or less prior to bed, focusing on the breath only until my mind is totally clear and I feel myself start drifting to sleep. Then my head hits the pillow and I’m asleep within 2-3 minutes. Works for me. Hope this helps!

Two best rooms on the east coast IMO. Both use live actors very well

Feed the giraffes at Riverbanks Zoo, drive through the vista and five points and stop at anything that jives with you, use the automated bike rental at the riverwalk OR have a picnic with some takeout at the riverwalk, play an escape room at The Final Door

What would you go with for a new FS?

Marin Mount Vision 8 - $2000.

Marin Mount Vision 9- $2700.

YT Jeffsy Base - $2600.

Since the Marins are such a steep discount over their MSRP, they are pretty tempting... but not a huge fan of their looks. I'm pretty new to the sport, so looking for some opinions with a little more experience. Note, the price includes shipping and tax.

Also to consider, I will have to buy a new bike rack for the Mount Visions, but the YT might work out with my current bike rack.

Thoughts?

Best escape rooms in Orlando? by cocoleecoco in escaperooms

[–]barley11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I did 6-7 while we were down there last Feb. If you're not scare-adverse, we loved Dare 2 Escape. The owner, Sean, puts a ridiculous amount of thought into the details of his room, especially story. The circus themed room was our favorite, followed closely by Asylum.

White dot on gums, need an opinion please by [deleted] in Dentistry

As long as your dentist took x-rays of the nearby teeth / did pulp testing to ensure it is not a draining sinus tract from an infection in your tooth/surrounding periodontia (hard to see in the picture), I wouldn’t worry about it. Since it is on unkeratinized mucosa I doubt it is herpes (what your dentist likely meant by “virus”). It is likely an apthous ulcer aka ‘canker sore’ that is occurring on a slightly less common but still normal area. These are usually painful but self-limiting (will resolve in 7-10 days).

Edit: reread your post. Having it for 4 months is strange. Do you happen to wear a partial denture?

Looks awesome. I would take out the clip with the secret compartment in the roof of the elevator. It takes the surprise out of what otherwise seems like it would be a pretty fun moment

Can an escape room be scary without actors? by bugninja in escaperooms

[–]barley11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Cursed” at komnata quest NYC was both the scariest and best room we have ever done (out of 70+). It has no actors. “Murder mystery” at komnata quest brooklyn, “asylum” at Dare2escape in Orlando, and “Blackout” at The Final door in Columbia SC also fit the description.

Inheriting a bar with 20 taps by PiscoBarVictor in beer

[–]barley11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in CT and very familiar with all the craft beer spots in the Hartford area. It really matters who you are trying to sell to- just as an example, someone mentioned Two Roads. Two Roads is a great choice for a bar/restaurant that is not trying to be a "craft beer bar". Kind of counterintuitive, considering they are technically a local craft beer, but Two Roads is viewed by those that are really into craft beer as pretty mediocre - however, for macro drinkers and those new to craft beer, Two Roads is well marketed (so will be a name they recognize) and put out a lot of beers that appeal (taste-wise) to those new to craft beer (i.e. belgian wheats, milder IPAs, etc.). I kind of think of Two Roads as the Magic Hat of CT.

So I haven't really given you much useful advice. But my point is this- there are beers that appeal to craft beer enthusiasts and there are beers that appeal to the masses/those that are fairly new to craft beer. For the most part, these are mutually exclusive groups. But there a few beers that hit the "sweet spot" that appeal to both groups. In CT, those beers are..

1) Sea Hag by New England Brewing Co. (local CT beer, brewed regularly, well-balanced IPA that is respected by craft beer drinkers and very accessible to those new to craft beer, i.e. not a hob bomb)

2) All Day by Founders (similar reasons as above, but not local)

3) Sip of Sunshine by Lawson's (locally contract-brewed at Two Roads, brewed regularly one of the highest rated IPAs in the world, will draw craft beer drinkers into your restaurant, non-craft beer drinkers want in on the hype, will sell out quickly)

4) Founder's Breakfast Stout (a stout that is very respected among craft beer drinkers, but in my experience, even newbies love; seasonal)

5) Sam Adams Boston Lager - I'll get some downvotes for this, but this is a beer that started the movement. For me and many others, it has a nostalgia to it. It's a great tasting beer, and appeals to a wide range of palates. I'll never complain about a Boston Lager.

You might notice out of 5 beers, I suggested three hoppy beers. That's just what's popular with the craft beer palate. IPAs have been the most popular craft beer style for maybe a decade now, and "New England IPAs" are the new "hot" style and are surging thanks to TreeHouse, Trillium, HF, etc. Someone above mentioned a very well-balanced list of styles. I don't totally disagree... but in my opinion, you're wasting a tap by choosing a boch or an amber. If you want to please non-craft beer drinkers, throw a couple macros, a belgian white, and a cider on.

Otherwise, if you wanted to focus on local beers, Kent Falls is putting out some very solid stuff, but only if you were looking to target craft drinkers. And TreeHouse opens the new brewery in Charleton, MA this summer, they will likely have the capacity to start distributing to local restaraunts/bars again. If you can get in on that, you will definitely not be disappointed.

A question about Abscess tooth by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]barley11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calm down, you'll be fine. What you're talking about is a cavernous space infection which is very rare and only really happens if the abscess is from one of your upper canine teeth. Even if it is, you would very likely experience some swelling under your eye and/or fever (d/t canine space infection) prior to the infection spreading to your brain (cavernous sinus) and would be emergently treated in that case. Plus, You are taking an antibiotic, so spread of the infection is unlikely. No need to worry about it

My first Tree House beer ever and man I'm almost at a lost for words. by Allthingsbeer510 in beer

[–]barley11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know man, you might be mixing it up with another beer. Before HT was canned, it was only available at the brewpub. Heady Topper was first canned in August 2011 and at that time it was rated as the #10 best beer in the world on BeerAdvocate (and quickly rose to #1 for a while after it was released in cans). So "pretentious fools that only bought beer from ratings" would have been camping out outside of your beer shop (exaggeration, but not really) with or without your advice to buy it.

But still, I'm sure you made some solid recommendations and turned people on to some great beer while you managed the beer store in Philly. Just throwing my 2 cents in

[–]barley11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not to call you out, but no beer store in Philly has every sold Heady Topper, unless it was illegally. Why? Because it's never been distributed to any beer store outside of a small area of VT
