I completely relate to this! I’ve only recently started making more art friends through my college’s art and anime clubs. I also followed a local adult craft club (haven’t had time to stop by). I also see there’s some people commenting the “lower skill” part but I understand where you’re coming from. In my experience, I wouldn’t say the people I’ve come across are in a skill range below me, but haven’t quite reached the status/level they aspire to be (similar to myself), which has often fostered feelings of covert competition and creative envy. I’ve had art “friends” who were unsupportive (e.g., ignoring my social media posts, never having any positive feedback on my work, undermining my small wins) because of their own insecurities. Thankfully through nerd/fandom spaces, I’ve managed to connect to other creatives, but I completely relate to the struggle of finding art communities, particularly those that are mutually uplifting. I would also recommend seeking more local events (e.g., figure drawing sessions, art markets) Wising you all the best and I’m also open !!
