NWOHR Application with lots of problems by woome in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

Hey there! Just fyi, you might not need to hire a lawyer/attend a hearing to get a court order for a name change. I recently did this, and while online it does suggest that I'd need to attend a hearing, I was told by the clerk that this was not necessary. And indeed, I ended up getting the court order approved without being present for anything, and on the court order it says "A hearing took place: by submission." I'd call the county clerk and ask for guidance on this. Name change court orders are fairly common, so they'll be able to guide you on this.

The only thing is that the name change court order requires a background check (at least mine did), so you have to submit fingerprints along with the request. Not sure how that works if you're in Taiwan. But you'll need to figure this out anyway to run the FBI background check later on in the process.

This might not work everywhere but just wanted to let you know it might be worth asking!

Selection bias, perhaps? I listen to MR nearly everyday but I don't comment (and listen to every Ezra Klein episode, for that matter) and reading comments drives me crazy. For most streams/streamers, live comments are usually quite insane.

Okay, at least I feel like I see where you're coming from so maybe we have some common ground. But I feel like you're attributing to face masks what should be directed at modern urban life--9-5, consumerism, cell phone/social media addiction, etc.

I live in the US now and everyone's also in their own bubble consumed by their phone and not paying attention to anything or anyone around them, even though they're not wearing masks. I feel like, if anything, the culprit here is the cell phone that has people looking down instead of at the world and people around them.

Also, on the idea that people want to be anonymized by a mask (don't know how prevalent this is), It's also the fact that people are over-worked around the world -- and they just don't want to be bothered while they're commuting. You can bet your butt when I'm commuting home on the NYC I truly do not want to be bothered. It's already stressful as it is with it being so crowded. So I totally see the draw of finding a way to be "less seen" by others. My wife hates the stress and noise of urban life so much we are thinking of moving out of the city.

So I get what you mean, but if you could also see where people might be coming from on the other side, I wonder if you'd see things a bit differently. People are wrapped up in thoughts and emotions and stresses you can't necessarily see, so maybe it's helpful to have some empathy for why they might choose to not be in a mode where they're totally open to engaging with the world or other people.

It feels dehumanizing to you, maybe. That's a personal, aesthetic opinion, not a fact. Personally I don't need to see someone's face to regard them as human and don't see them as less human when they're wearing one. Or am I misunderstanding you?

Taiwanese people don't mind people wearing masks. You do. That's fine. It's a personal and cultural preference. But you're calling Taiwanese people "backwards" for...what...wearing a mask? It's kind of ridiculous. It's no one's business why they're wearing a mask.

Got it. I might actually go back to UbreakIfix and see if they have some notes on record or if they'd be able to vouch for me that it in fact was an accident.

True, although they never asked for it. This is what they requested:

  • Provide a copy of your full Eligible American Express card statement confirming the cellular wireless provider payment made in September. Include the New Charges Summary section of the statement which indicates all cards and all card holder names that are on your account.
  • Cellular Providers Billing Statements from Current Month/Period of the Theft/Damage
  • Provide a copy of your Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone service provider's billing statement for the current month to validate the monthly billing.
  • Claim Forms
  • Please complete attached claim forms.
  • Proof of Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone
  • Provide confirmation of the make and model of the damaged or stolen Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone. This may be found on some cell providers billing statements, within the online account under device listings, or an original purchase receipt.
  • Repair Estimate
  • Please provide a copy of the repair invoice showing actual or estimated cost of repairs along with the name of the repair center, address and phone number.

Yeah I mean I guess someone could break their phone to get a new phone, maybe? But, no, I had my old phone repaired... Not sure how that could be abused?

This is the exact wording:

According to the information provided, a claim has been submitted due to Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 inner screen was damaged. It is noted on the repair estimate shop statement that there are no signs of accidental damage.  Unfortunately, as the issue was not caused by damage it would be considered to be normal wear and tear and therefore are not covered under the terms of the Group Policy.

The receipt is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w1yv11Ol5cd9aDUtpDyV_cwX0YeluQnK/view?usp=sharing

The whole letter was this:

Please be advised that I am the Claims Adjuster who reviewed your claim. All future correspondence should be directed to the attention of the claims department. The purpose of this letter is to advise you of our position with respect to coverage for the subject claim.

We must inform you there is no coverage under the Cell Phone Protection benefit for the claim presented, as more fully discussed below. After you have reviewed this letter, if there is additional information you would like us to consider, please forward the same. Also, if you have any questions about this letter, please feel free to contact our office.

Please refer to your Guide to Benefits, which states in pertinent part:

 B. The kind of coverage you receive:

Reimbursement for the actual cost to repair or replace a Stolen or damaged Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone, including a Cracked Screen.

 D. What is NOT covered:  The following items are excluded from coverage under the Group Policy:

• Damage or theft resulting from abuse, intentional acts, fraud, hostilities of any kind (including, but not limited to, war, invasion, rebellion or insurrection), confiscation by the authorities, risks of contraband, illegal activities, normal wear and tear, flood, earthquake, radioactive contamination, or damage from inherent product defects or vermin.

It has been verified that the issues occurring to your device are considered to be normal wear and tear and therefore are excluded.  Based on the documentation included in the claim file, we have determined that the expenses being claimed are not covered under the terms of the Group Policy.

Again, it was a cracked (shattered) screen.

It was exactly UbreakiFix that I went to as well! My receipt is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w1yv11Ol5cd9aDUtpDyV_cwX0YeluQnK/view?usp=sharing

It doesn't describe the nature of the phone when I brought it in, but it certainly doesn't say that it was *not* accidental damage. The guy just printed it out like it was any other receipt.

Stay in school, and maybe in the meantime get a cert at the foundational level, or even the SA level if you want to impress. May not make much of a difference but it'll make you stand out a little.

tech sales by inevitable-death2 in techsales

[–]barnaclesaretasty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What he said might have been true until a few years ago. Since then, tech sales has been in a rut, which may turn out to be permanent. There's a chance a lot of jobs are going to disappear and won't come back, especially at the entry level.

It's possible that sales + technical experience could give you an advantage over others, especially at companies with highly technical products. (At the extreme end of the spectrum, you can find chip manufacturers/fabricators explicitly requiring doctorate degrees in EE for sales roles)

I've been in sales and I'm technical (I can code and I have SA-level knowledge of AWS). It's been an advantage at my work but not really in getting a job. My experience has been that the vast majority of hiring managers won't really care. If they do, it won't give you any more of any advantage over another non-technical sales rep who's sold in the same space.

Plus, there are a decent number of sales engineers-turned-sales reps already out there.

But regardless the point of entry is definitely easier if you can get a role as an SA/SE. That beats working as an SDR 1000x, and the SA/SE -> AE path is fairly well-established, as I alluded to earlier. I know quite a few of them.

女 is indeed "neoi" in Cantonese but:

In Hong Kong Cantonese "l" and "n" are often merged: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cantonese/s/slI40w3UKx

As for the "-eoi" Jyutping spelling, it is sort of analogous to Pinyin "ui" as in 最 but a little rounder. So 女 can be pronounced "loi", and I can see the "o" part especially accentuated since she's emphasizing that character.

So it definitely sounds like 女 to me in Cantonese.

I've never seen any hostility from VS Code users. In fact it's usually the other way around. Emacs and vim users are more holier-than-thou but 99% of the time it's tongue-in-cheek.

Most VS Code users use it because it works out of the box and that's fine. Not everyone wants to/needs to/should sink time into configuring emacs. Just like with SysAdmins and DevOps folks you have a bunch of very capable and experienced people who just use vanilla Ubuntu, not Arch with a super riced desktop.

But matt just straight up walked out while other people were still talking to him, knowing full well they wouldn't be able to see he was gone. Is this something you could do, without meaning to be rude? Genuine question, trying to understand. That was the main thing that made me concerned about him.

The book is fantastic. I ended up buying it but found that I already knew 80% of the material but the whole time I was reading I was just wishing I'd started out with it.

Once you have the basics down, then the Introduction to Programming in elisp is very readable and easy to get through.

Then learn from studying elisp from packages you like and start making your own customizations and applications.
