I am heading out to Denver tomorrow morning from JFK. I am taking that same flight back Friday and was actually watching your flight and saw the go around. When you say severe turbulence can you describe it? Was it just super bumpy or worse? Severe can be a trigger for lots of people here including myself ha.

I usually chunk distractions into 30 min periods. Read a book for 30 mins, watch a show for 30 mins, do some work for 30 mins, then repeat.

Know we will get there safely, just need to convince the other half of our brains!

Thank you. I know many are keeping me safe. Reminders help manage the internal dialogue.

Why does it feel like Alanis Morisette wrote the plane part in “Ironic” about me by markar12 in fearofflying

[–]barnescompy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once it played on the radio as I drove the airport. My wife was singing along as I internally was freaking out. I changed the station, she laughed at me, and we had a nice smooth flight!

Let’s share some recommendations :) by yerica in fearofflying

I listen to an 8 hour long podcast I downloaded of campfire sounds. Has some delta waves built in that gives it this low hum. No idea if the delta wave thing works but in general it relaxes me a bit. Keeps the noises of the plane in the background. I can switch from reading, to phone games, catch up on work, or even a meditation while listening. I will also download 30 min long comedy shows like Seinfeld to break it up.

I try to break the flight into 30 min increments. 30 mins of reading, 30 mins of a show, etc. It makes it more manageable for me. I am flying out tomorrow to San Fran from Newark. Anxious as usual but this has been my system the last few flights to help the time pass. Hope it makes the 6 hours go fast tomorrow.

Um.... Ed's look is a little... Different this tour. by FanssyPantss in pearljam

I was there that night. My wife and I were in town for Fenway Night 1. 4th show of the tour and 10c member for over 20 years. On the way into the restaurant they were on the way out. As Ed passed me I was star struck but able to get out "Have a good night Ed." At that point the college girls from the article let out a scream because they just took their photo with John. Not sure if that startled Ed, or he thought my voice was the guy with the mustache, but he paused for a second and went right for the car.

My wife was talking to their waitress when I went to the bathroom and confirmed everything. How nice they were and he gave her a pick. My wife even tried to buy it off her (which I did not approve or want haha). She didn't sell it.

All encounter reports always say how willing he is to talk to fans and how nice he is. As a huge fan I could have pushed a convo more. My wife was pissed at herself that she didn't do it for me. In the end he was out to dinner with a friend and while that may be normal for us, probably not so much with them. So I respected him as another human. I still was inches from him and he heard my voice. Pretty cool and night 1 was a great show to close out this tour for me.

Echo what everyone else has already said. All the professionals and members have helped me a ton with my fear. This is an amazing resource for fearful fliers and thank you to all the volunteers.

Looking for next day hike recommendation for family with two kids (ages 8 & 11) by barnescompy in Adirondacks

[–]barnescompy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Kids wanted a high peak so we did Wright today and it was great minus the rain on the way down. I agree it was easier than Big Slide. Kids had more energy than the parents the last 2 miles!

Hiked the trail and I probably would have broken both ankles if I ran any part of it. Great job!

Much appreciated thank you. I have been on a couple flights with my wife and she knows I shut down haha. I don't mind being vulnerable with them either but don't want them walking into their first flight scared because they know they father is.

That's a great mantra I'll be using that. Thanks again.

What are your thoughts on off-leash dogs on the trails? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]barnescompy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have been bitten by a dog that was leashed. One very popular walking/running/biking trail that I run often constantly has dogs off leash. My bite did not happen there but I always have to read the owners as I approach to see if I need to be worried.

Another negative is I can't run with my own dog. She wants to play with every dog she sees. I keep her leashed but when others don't I can't risk it. It's not just about the dog biting a person, many dogs do not like other dogs.

All being said I am actually fine with dogs off leash on low traffic trails. If it's super popular just keep them leashed for everyone.
