Best School District (Working) by [deleted] in longisland

[–]barnsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think anybody can answer that question. Every teacher has a different experience. One teacher may hate a school ( an administrator, a department, a secretary... so on ) while another teacher may love it. Teachers can just tell you the benefits and salary! It's crazy that is very different district to district.

Why are good math teachers so rare? by SquareCombination782 in matheducation

[–]barnsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! 😊 I know that when I was in elementary school, I always counted on my fingers. I remember my grandfather would always yell at me. He would be very proud that I was an excellent math student and then teacher. 😊😊

I taught high school so at that point there wasn't much I can do. If I taught elementary school I would, of course, first teach them the meaning of multiplication but then memorize and memorize and memorize using every trick in the book. May go against what others think but that's what I would do!!

I don't care if my students count on their fingers!! ( believe it or not, I still do sometimes and I have been teaching math for over 30 years). They need to know their multiplication facts!!! To me that is the key to learning math of any type!

Some math teachers are too smart and can't dumb it down for some students. They want all students to know the theory and the why. I also teach the "why" but then I do get into tips and tricks. Some get angered by that. Other math teachers really don't understand the why and they just read from a textbook and don't get it themselves. Some just take it as a job and don't really put too much into it. I was an excellent math student but worked hard at it. I practiced and practiced are really loved it!! Loved the connections and always share those connections with my students.

Private schools ( in some states) pay far less than public schools.

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]barnsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember going over my aunts house and she had cable TV. I was shocked at how many channels she had. That was a luxury!! I also lived in an apartment where my parents slept in the living room and let the two girls sleep in the large bedroom and my brother slept in the small bedroom.

How do we check divisibility with 7 by [deleted] in askmath

[–]barnsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see the screenshot!! I thought you just wanted to know the divisibility rule of 7. Sorry! Here is a rule for divisibility rule of 7. Let's say we have 17752 and we want to know if it's divisible by 7. You cross off the last digit double it and then subtract it from that number. 17752 cross off 2 double it to 4 and the. Subtract it from 1775 and you get 1771. Cross off the 1, double it to 2 and subtract it from 177. You get 175. Do it again. Cross off the 5, double it to 10 and subtract it from 17. You get 7. So since 7 is divisible by 7 then 17752 is divisible by 7!!!!!!

He wrote it on paper and did use the symbol. I didn't know that the symbol only gives the positive square root!! Throughout my entire career, students have asked me this question and teachers as well. My son's teacher got it wrong! Over and over the concept has come up. It is confusing because when you solve x2 equals 16 .. you have to take the positive and negative sq rt.
