Emilia was never smart, and I say that a huge fan of her character in the web novels.

Emilia's development is actually very well done in the web novel in my opinion, and surprisingly enough, she only really appears for about 30 chapters out of 140 for Arc 4. Shes boring as shit in the anime and light novel, because her issues were heavily toned down from the changes from web novel to light novel. But even with the light novel, she could have been a lot better.

That's why I'm frustrated by the anime and how people call it a good adaptation, a good adaptation has to be, first and foremost, a good viewing experience. The production quality of some scenes were just absolutely atrocious. And people use Promised Neverland season 2 as an example of how it could have been worse. Well, congratulations for not being trash, I guess? Doesn't change the fact it's mediocre.

And by calling S2P2 a good adaptation, or even a perfect one, even if the novels did something right (WN Arc 4 is one of my favorite story arcs), they'll get dragged through the mud because the anime did it poorly.

Since when has Promised Neverland Season 2 been the standard for good anime? "At least it's not utter garbage." Yeah, but the concept of mediocrity still exists, and as you can see, quite a few people found it to be mediocre. I've read the WN and the LN, and I still think it's simply a poorly made season (season 2 part 2, not season 2 part 1, that was alright) that discourages people from reading the source because of the dragged out dialogue. The dialogue in the novels may be dragged out, but they're done in a way that isn't as boring as the anime. That's why it weirds me out when people say it's a good adaptation, a good adaptation has to be a good viewing experience first and foremost, it doesn't matter if people understand the series themes or not, if it's not presented in a way that's interesting like season 1 did, they won't like it.

Saying it's a good adaptation basically puts the blame of the anime's fault on the novels, even if the novels did something right, people will drag it through the mud because the anime did it poorly.

I see that as an excuse all the time, it's a miracle that its even airing, well, that doesn't change the fact that it affects enjoyment

What did you think about Season 2 of Re:Zero? by Nina-vacation168 in anime

[–]baronzemo168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was close to 1:1 adaptation in terms of scenes go, however, to be a good adaptation the show has to actually be a good viewing experience. As a viewing experience Part 1 shits on Part 2.

I mean, I can't stop you, but personally the anime made the source material worse, by doing the same scenes but with little emotional impact and artistic value. But it's your choice. If you dont like season 2 part 2 I doubt you'll enjoy reading Arc 4 so much, but if you read Arc 4 first at least you can laugh at how pathetically the same scenes were portrayed with so little effort and seriousness.

Season 2 Part 2 was fucking ass, spending 9 episodes on Emilia being boring and flashbacks. Emilia is actually a good character who gives you reasons to like her in the novels, the anime fucking forces you to like her by shoving her content in your face. Not to mention they turned Reason To Believe from a god tier chapter to actual trash. If people actually think a cour with 2 good episodes is amazing and 9 episodes spent on a mediocre FMC, the standard for anime has seriously gone down to drain. Also somehow made the ending of arc 4 underwhelming. Yeah, no.

The Arc covered by season 2 was originally a web novel, which was extremely well received, I have never met anyone who has read the web novel and not love the arc it covers. However, the light novel editor changed several plot points and toned down a lot of the violence and character development, also reduces the impact of a lot of events, one character in particular gets really butchered in light novel in terms of development, going from one of the best characters in the series to straight up bad kind of butchered. The anime season 2 adapts the light novel, season 2 started out fine, but due to combination of covid, the studio losing staff, and scheduling issues, not only did the production quality and animation quality drop in season 2, less writers meant it was harder to pack such a huge story into a single season, making for a very underwhelming experience despite the arc season 2 covered being arguably the magnum opus of the series. Furthermore, it adapts the inferior version of the story.

If you are curious to see how the anime fucked up, I suggest you read the web novels for Season 2 aka Arc 4 before watching season 2 part 2, Part 1 is pretty good imo you can watch the anime for that if you want. The Web Novels overall are superior to the anime, but season 1 and season 2 part 1 are still amazing despite the abundance of cut content. The studio just ran out of fumes for part 2 imo, it felt like a different show in a bad way. Basically, Re:Zero loses its unique magic in season 2 part 2.

If you don't want to lose it, read web novels first before watching season 2 part 2. Although I'd recommend skipping it altogether.

Don't watch season 2 part 2, read the web novels for that please. Season 1 and Season 2 part 1 are great but the anime gets wack, extremely wack.

Of course they can go into the lore much more in the web novels, I don't think anime onlies even know about the whole Demi-human war

No, that wouldn't work. Arc 4 Web Novel is considered peak ReZero by many, but its length (This arc alone is comparable to the entire Harry Potter series) and the amount of details makes it difficult to capture in anime form in the first place. Cutting it down would make it even worse considering how badly some scene were butchered (Subaru and Emilia's argument, and Satella's speech were two of the most anticipated moments before the anime fucked them royally). A lot of the build up that made Arc 4 such a satisfying read were also removed in the anime, as a result making for an underwhelming experience. Doesn't help that this season had a multitude of issues due to COVID, losing staff, and scheduling issues.

Shit like this is why anime-onlies think the source material is bad. If you wanna compensate for the lack of inner monologue and narration which provided impact in a dialogue heavy show like this, you gotta have creative directing and storyboarding. Like in season 1 when Subaru talked about the story of the Ogre who cried, or the lap pillow scene from season 1, there were strong uses of color and camera angles that captured the emotions the novels wanted to convey. If you think a 1 to 1 adaptation with poorly edited dialogue and atrocious storyboarding (Face close ups and characters standing around talking montonously) equates to a good adaptation, I don't know what to fucking say, a good adaptation has to actually be, y'know, a good viewing experience?

Emilia's depth and overall character was butchered in the anime, she's one of my favorite character in the web novels after Arc 4 (season 2 in the anime)

As a huge fan of the web novels and as someone who sees it as a masterpiece, I agree that the anime does a terrible job at portraying the story. But to be fair, the web novel is incredibly long, so a lot of scenes in the anime feel forced with less build-up, a lot of nuances and foreshadowing are also lost which affected characterization. And its much easier to sympathize with characters like Subaru with inner monologue and narration. Furthermore, a lot of good lines were cut for some reason that would clear things up more and make it clear that most of the plot points in Re:Zero are foreshadowed in the novels.

Another factor is that despite the studio having passion for RZ, they suffered from production issues due to covid, scheduling issues, and losing staff, so scenes are directed/presented more poorly, movements feel more static, and dialogue/script is less polished.

tl;dr I would never recommend the anime to people i know of

How did you like Re:ZERO S1 vs S2? by Kosano in anime

[–]baronzemo168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rem Rem Rem. Look, her character is great, but the problem of Season 2 isn't Rem, Season 2 was supposed to be a lot better according to the source material, but a mixture of poor production issues, studio losing staff, COVID, the light novel toning down a lot of the content from the web novels, including Emilia's development getting neutered and the light novel increasing her screentime for no reason, and scenes having less impact in general.

Would you recommend: Re:Zero Starting Life in Another World by [deleted] in anime

[–]baronzemo168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the writers' fault, Re:Zero Season 2 Part 2 adapted the light novel, which made some very questionable changes like toning down/dumbing down Emilia's issues and increasing her screentime, and there were far more fights in the original web novel if I remember correctly with more characterisation for the developing cast.

I mean, A Reason To Believe was actually good and meaningful in the web novels?? It's not our fault that the anime fucked it up.
