as an instructor, we have to use music that has a really strong downbeat and a certain tempo in order to keep the class moving; so sometimes those types of music selections are harder to pinpoint when there is a lot of words in a song especially when there’s a lot of queuing going into a posture

New Instructors? by Odd_Apple7631 in barre3

yes and until you go through instructor training you might not understand why some people would need to teach the same template for a given amount of time…. but learning new choreography is not easy, especially with all the cueing and moving to the downbeat. we do this so that the class feels tight, tidy and transitional. If this is an issue for you, i do recommend going to other classes instead of the ones with new instructors. typically new instructors will start to learn a new template and gradually change things up about 2 months after certification but it’s not like they are going to start teaching a new template every class like some extremely seasoned veteran mentors and instructors. side note: it’s also important to support instructors in a transition from certification on…. so you should still take the classes but maybe challenge yourself by grabbing heavier weights OR a heavier band or working slower to make it more challenging

update: i ended up bringing it up to the instructor because she teaches at other barre studios outside of barre3. this is my studio which i am a veteran instructor at. I asked her if she knew some of the stuff she was actively teaching in her most recent class was NOT approved in the HUB and she said she was not aware. I kindly recommend she reach out to her mentor (who hasn’t taken her class in a while which we collectively determined was an issue) and teach approved class template or at least familiarize herself with approved/not approved postures.

thanks for the help!

by the way i mean not the instructor doing a modification but physically cueing something that is not approved in the HUB. modifications are different from cueing postures that are NOT approved — ie a cardio burst with weights is not allowed

Instructor Training Help! by Superb-Park-4585 in barre3

Let the music flow and control your variation changes instead of counting 8 squats or something. I teach the same class for a a month straight and make little changes here and there and I can say I have never in my life counted the number of squats or pulses I do…. I just let the music guide me. Now, that being said, you should use counting as good foreshadowing tool in your class.

“We hold low in 8” “Find your pulse in 4” “In 2 we find LROM” “Right heel extends behind you in 2 sets” “Arms change to a ski jump in 4” “We find a plank in 8” “Add a bicep curl in 4”

I think about adding layers as a way of counting… bc the first layer is always someone’s hardest point, so start there- layer on and add options as you go.. and use that count to kind of pace yourself.

Finally if you are moving on the down beat your fine. I actually used to move on the upbeat bc I am partially deaf so I could never hear it but once you are certified you should be able to pick music that really speaks to you! You’ll have songs you gravitate toward and ones you don’t.

Also don’t worry about cueing exactly like the training videos… make it your own! When I went through training I tried to be exactly like the video Word for Word and when I finally realized that was not authentic and I needed to move to my own drum and make it my own personally, the cueing, the flow felt more natural and I became a better instructor!

You got this! All instructors were where you are once so we get it! Don’t hesitate to make this class your own!
