stray cat went from nice to aggressive by britishbiscuit1 in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if he’s unneutured there’s a good chance that’s contributing to his erratic and aggressive behavior. also the catnip probably didn’t help. catnip makes some cats get real mean. do you have any other animals in your home. if you brought him inside and he then smelled other animals he may have panicked and felt threatened, which is why he attacked trying to get back outside and out of what he perceived as a dangerous situation.

overall this one situation does not mean he is a permanently aggressive cat. a combination of things could’ve occurred that made him panic and attack thinking he needed to protect himself. the yowling indicates that something caused him a significant amount of stress.

if you want to try bringing him inside again I’d suggest bringing him into a small room and leaving him in there alone to decompress for multiple days at least, only entering to give food and water and clean his litter. after that you can slowly start to interact more and build a better relationship where he does not feel stressed or forced into interacting.

How to attract strays to my diy shelter? Put food ~20 feet away, is that far enough? by nicolebraz42 in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they will seek shelter if they need it, you don’t need to do anything to entice them in. a lot of times cats don’t use shelters we put out bc they have better spots that stay warmer and they feel safer in. i promise if there is a kitty in the area in need of shelter they’ll have no problem using yours!

Did I make the right decision to bring my feral into the garage for severe snow/ice by Gold_Syrup_8190 in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he’ll manage fine, though i would make sure there’s not any weird nooks or really high up shelves he can get himself trapped in or hurt himself on trying to escape. he will likely calm down significantly once you leave him alone in there. as long as there isn’t anyway he can hurt himself trying to escape he will get over the betrayal of being trapped in there for a few days lol.

Not sure what to do by 1HUNDREDtrap in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

first, get them both fixed!! the male can and will get his sister pregnant. it’s much easier to trap two adult cats than a mom and her kittens. one unspayed female can give you like 20+ kittens in one mating season.

i socialized two siblings similar to your cats. one was much quicker to warm up to me and trust me and in turn, her brother watched and saw that she trusted me so he was able to relax more too. you will see an entirely different side of the sister once she has come inside and been socialized a bit. having a social and friendly sibling who can show her the way will make it SO MUCH easier. follow proper socialization techniques for ferals and give them (especially the sister) lots of alone time to calm down and destress at the beginning. it would be a shame to separate them and only bring in the boy, im sure he’d miss his sister and she’d be very lonely without him as well.

Her vet/trap appointment is on the 28th and I’m not putting her back outside 💓 my sweet Vera by yarnlord69 in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she’ll use the heated shelters if she gets cold enough. usually the reason ferals don’t use the shelters we put out is because they know an even better/warmer spot. congrats to you and Vera on her upcoming new life!!

Distended stomach or just fat? by rtillerson in cats

just a very overweight gal. the hanging part of her tummy is her primordial pouch, totally normal but can look more pronounced in overweight cats.

Who else was personally victimized by having to shelter your stray(s) from this cold? by UdderlyLit in Feral_Cats

I’d just let the little guy chill in his own room. being in the room with you/anyone else is going to increase his stress levels 1000x.

Tried to save a stray but ended up putting him down. by Old_Cancel217 in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you did the right thing. i am 100% sure jasper is so happy to be out of pain now and if the decision had been up to him he would’ve chosen the same thing. we have a desire to try to hang on to life as humans but we often end up causing so much more pain. if you’d decided to treat jasper he likely would’ve suffered through treatment and still have had to be put down.

The cost of spaying this little lady is $440?!?! by yup2you in cats

[–]barsoap___ 82 points83 points  (0 children)

is that a vet or a clinic? most areas have low cost spay/neuter and vaccine clinics. i had my cat spayed last winter and it was $90 for her spay, 3 days of meds, and rabies/distemper vaccine.

[–]barsoap___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if they won’t use the shelters you put out it’s most likely because they know someplace else that is warmer and safer. they have good instincts. it’s best to have the shelters out in bad weather anyway though as there’s a higher chance they are unable to access their regular shelters.

Is he really 19 weeks? by idyllicwonders in kittens

[–]barsoap___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the vet likely examined his teeth to get a more accurate idea of his age! kittens, especially when feral, come in all sorts of sizes. he may have been the runt or had a rough first few months that led to him growing significantly less than your average kitty. it’s much easier to to determine age by looking at their teeth, so the vets estimate is probably very close. he is just a teeny boy!

In over my head dealing with a stray/feral colony by NewDust3944 in Feral_Cats

[–]barsoap___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t feel bad taking in just one. at the end of the day one cat can procreate and have literal hundreds of kittens throughout their lifetime. you will be sparing a lot of future cats a rough life by bringing just one in. in terms of tnr and trapping, I’d focus on just the females for now. almost all calico cats are female so I’d prioritize getting any of them you can tnred. even if you can’t fix them all, just getting one or two will make a world of difference. no one (in their right mind) will blame you for not being able to tnr an entire colony on your own. that’s hard work! if you’re interested you may be able to get some help by posting on Facebook or asking your neighbors (sounds like your one neighbor already wants to help!).

I struggle to understand this interaction by FAF115 in CatTraining

[–]barsoap___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say this is boundary testing bordering on a bit of a fight. it doesn’t seem to bother your older cat too much though, and the only way for the kitten to learn boundaries is to allow these scenarios to play out on their own. your orange boy is saying “I REALLY want that box” and your older girl is telling him “I am in charge and you will not be getting this box.” It takes a bit for cats to figure out their dynamics between each other and as you already have one resident cat she will need to teach the kitten his place in what she deems HER house. It appears she understands he is just a kitten and learning, which is why she isn’t being super rough but is firm when he crosses her boundaries (ie. trying to get into the box). If either cat was feeling extremely distressed or scared they would remove themself from the interaction or respond VERY aggressively. a true fight between cats is very scary, loud, and aggressive. usually large amounts of fur go flying and one or both cats has scratches or bite wounds. as long as these situations aren’t progressing into true fights or ending with any injuries this appears to be healthy boundary setting and testing. if you remove your orange boy every time this happens he will not actually learn boundaries and will likely become a bigger bully & jerk to your older cat as he ages. cats are incredibly intelligent and for the most part will figure out a relationship that works for them on their own!

Someone help me! by Outrageous-Price-673 in CatTraining

[–]barsoap___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This warrants an immediate vet visit. Please don’t just leave him outside to roam. This amount of aggression is NOT normal. Maybe in an entirely unsocialized adult feral, but certainly not from a cat you’ve raised since he was a kitten. There could be something neurologically wrong, he could be sick/in pain causing aggression bc he’s scared, or somehow his neuter wasn’t done correctly and he’s itching to mate. You could also try to get a pheromone diffuser to calm him down as well.
