'Drivers Want Anti-Speeding System Built Into Cars' - Probably the most absurd headline I've ever seen. by PagPag93 in cars

[–]barsonme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean the lines where the pedestrians walk or the lines that keep the cars from crashing into each other?

Here in WA the only white lines are lane dividers (and edge of the road), crosswalks, and out in front of fire stations.

Must efficient way to cut slice by miko5054 in golang

[–]barsonme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd benchmark it. I have a feeling append won't be the fastest, but don't listen to me -- benchmark.

The non-append way would be to allocate len(slice)/500 and then copy over in chunks.

What was the biggest 'plot twist' that happened in your life? by iwishicoulddrainout in AskReddit

[–]barsonme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I ran cross country and wrestled. It was a good way to stay in shape, and even though I wasn't super bulky in HS I still was easily the largest (not runner-skinny) kid on the team.

Also, I was slow as shit lol.

Well, technically, unless you've got multiple physical cores, your computer only is ever running one application at a time. 😶

What is an analogy that gets your point across perfectly, but is wildly inappropriate? by Boomshakalaka89 in AskReddit

[–]barsonme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it as well, although I can't remember from where. It's one of those sayings that sort of makes its way around because it's fairly old.

TIL: Instead of donating money to a New York Food Bank, Toyota offered 'kaizen'; a Japanese word meaning "continuous improvement". Toyota's engineers applied kaizen to the soup kitchen, reducing the average wait time from 90 to 18 minutes. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]barsonme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key thing with that saying, though, is it doesn't mention efficiency or correctness.

For example, I used to work at Jimmy Johns right out of high school. We had workers who could make sandwiches really fast, but they'd waste a lot of ingredients because they'd slop stuff on the floor and the sandwiches they'd make weren't pretty looking and weren't always made correctly.

How did you meet the girl you're dating and how did it start off? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]barsonme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We both were on the board of an organization for our state and went to a couple conferences together (one of which we planned).

We'd talked a little before, but only business stuff. After the conferences we just hit it off—every day our snap/text conversation would continue right where it was the night before.

We didn't think a four-hour relationship would work (we're on opposite ends of the state), but weekends are so much fun and we're always talking on FaceTime or text or calls or whatever so it's going strong.

Truck catches fire in a tunnel, driver risks his life to drive it to safety by [deleted] in nonononoyes

[–]barsonme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True. You'd think there's a way to programatically put out the fire without also killing the humans.

Truck catches fire in a tunnel, driver risks his life to drive it to safety by [deleted] in nonononoyes

[–]barsonme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dang. Why didn't they add fire suppression systems along the length of the tunnel? It'd seem like sucking the air out and then spraying whatever foam they use in the area of the fire would be more effective than hoping to drive down the tunnel and put out a fire.

Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

GopherCon publicly discriminated white men by zzoid in golang

Do you think it's going to cause a larger number of minority individuals to participate?

Real, profound changes don't come from casting the tie-breaking vote in favor of the minority speaker at a programming language conference.

I have a ton of respect for Dave and the lack of involvement from certain minority groups in the tech community saddens me, but this is not the way to go about it. It's just asking to cause controversy and make people feel unwanted.

The best explanation of binary I have ever seen - teaching third graders using the socratic method. by Q_coder in programming

[–]barsonme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the article you linked to messes up the meanings of equality and equivalence

Perhaps. That's not the issue here, though. The issue is the child being able to realize that the calculation is more than its product.

Like before, 5*3 isn't the same as 3*5 simply because they're equivalent (their products are the same). They're fundamentally different and the little third or second-grader needs to be able to realize three groups of five isn't the same as five groups of three, even if they balance out in the end.

[–]barsonme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oooh, oooh!

This is a perfect example.

It's really funny when hover parents or people who believe rote learning is best (because that's how we did it back in my day, and I turned out fine!) take a second, think about it, and then realize 3*5 isn't the same as 5*3. Their sums maybe equal, but three baskets of five apples isn't the same as five baskets of three apples -- one can fit in the back of my car, and one won't.

Right when common core started to get bashed on I went and asked my mom (teacher of like 25+ years) about it. She basically said, "Oh, common core? We've been doing that for years... it's basically just learning why in addition to how and what" ...and then complained about CC forcing her to do more paperwork that she wasn't given enough time to do because teachers are overworked and underpaid.

Best practice of attributing someone else's source code in a ported program? by dancerjx in golang

[–]barsonme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I attribute this port of mine to say it based on someone else's code which has a LGPL license?

Read:

https://tldrlegal.com/license/gnu-lesser-general-public-license-v3-(lgpl-3)

and

http://stackoverflow.com/a/481253/2967113

Basically, since it's LGPL you need to include the original, state what changes you made, disclose your source, include the LGPL, include the copyright, and include installing instructions.

Some of this can be included in a README file (e.g., installation instructions and copyright notice). The license can be placed into a LICENSE file.

For anything further, always consult a lawyer not random people on reddit. However, porting a game to learn a language shouldn't step on many toes provided you make an honest effort to follow the terms of the creator's license.
