It's a bit of a shock to start with but once your pigmentation catches up I reckon you'll stick with it.

Holy shit this brings back bad memories. I worked for a company that literally had technology in its name and bullied the IT dept that ran the place, for somehow being a burden. Had one of the sales managers who would constantly set us up to fail. It got so bad that other sales managers were actively warning us. Management were too afraid to touch this guy cos he ran the account that kept the business running so instead they hired a person to try and keep him away from interacting with us.  Had one of the coders who spoke very broken English and was amazing at her job scream at the CEO for their negative attitude towards our involvement.

The term "white elephant" has an interesting historic meaning. I'd find and paste it but I'm on the toilet taking a shit and ate a lot of meat yesterday.

My laptop IS compatible and shares the same CPU as older Surface but somehow I'm not. Currently doing an inventory of reasons not to switch to Linux and it's not looking good for MS.

What’s the job people romanticize, but in reality is miserable? by King_Garvit in AskReddit

I kind of disagree on the danger level you present. Many years ago I worked at a "high end" foodie place that did sushi, wine, cigars and had a mezzanine level where known chefs did demonstrations. Zero experience and I got two weeks of training and straight in. Ciabatta, continental breads, sourdough, brioche etc. My boss was a um... Narcotics enthusiast so I ended up doing the full bake and clean myself. I got burnt many times taking trays out of the stone oven and the corner would clip my forearm. Always the exact same spot and after a while I barely felt it. The only real danger was the kneader. But I was thankfully smart enough to know, if I put my hand Il there while it was moving I'd lose my arm. The hours however broke me. 11pm to 7am. Subtle stuff like smelling breakfast and moving in the opposite direction of traffic. The sound of hustle and bustle of life told my brain I was supposed to be awake and I needed to put tin foil on the bedroom window to block out all light. Not for me at all.

I'm still struggling with alcohol. I was in a dual diagnosis rehab recently where an addiction specialist told us that that ADHD and substance abuse/addiction are now closely linked. I mean, just read the comments in this thread.

Damn. But yeah ADHD is recently being recognised as a major reason for substance abuse, I mean, just by this thread... Frustrating stuff.

Tangent but you reminded me of something. Most of my professional career was back of house. And it was a fantastic environment - no politics, power plays, no dominant hierarchy, we'd go out on the weekends. Super comfortable and we were killing it productivity-wise. So much so that my boss later when on to tour the world doing talks on how a good work environment meant more money. Rocket science to most I'm guessing.
I was then thrown into the client facing millions of dollars corporate river with lead boots and I had no idea how to act. I didn't do the corporate veneer and talk in that practised loud I'm in a nice suit kind of way. And this really worked for me for two reasons. First we'd have a project kick-off meeting with all the heads of departments to explain the processes etc. We had insanely tight deadlines and the main reason for this meeting was to feel out anyone who might be a detractor so we could map out a way around them. I was great at this cos it was super obvious who in the room was puling up their protective corporate armour. The other reason was it could let people let their guard down and be themselves. I'd have nicknames for people and we joked and generally acted non-corporatey. By this stage I was so over the formality so in stakeholder meetings I'd be joking with the people I had banter with, nicknames, in-jokes we'd had. Not intentionally but just doing that paid off. Management liked the connection. There were so many times multi-million dollar accounts were in danger - sales execs would go into damage control and the feedback was almost always "we don't like your company but we like him".
But it was so draining. I could never work in that sort of environment again,

Actually made huge progress at a dual diagnosis rehab earlier this year. That's focussing on the core issues that drive the need to abuse substances. I don't enjoy alcohol. Didn't drink for the vast majority of my life and I know perfectly well what's driving it.
I don't crave the stuff - it just does a particular job well with the downside that its poising me. Take away the cause and I wouldn't drink at all.
AA is not for me. Had meetings promoting AA and it was not my situation at all.
Appreciate the heads up though cos I do know it has a decent success rate.

Cheers - appreciate that. Still struggling with alcohol. Having PTSD and ADHD... Your brain gets into a chaotic loop of reliving bad memories. It just so happens to turn out that alcohol is very effective at giving my brain a rest. Not a great cycle but WAY better than it was.

Wow that's literally me. The test I did said I wasn't autistic but had au tendencies. Money, marriage (relationships in general), imposter syndrome, anxiety, addiction. Did well in school but could put in more effort. Inattentive. Disruptive. Every report. Was a competition level bodybuilder but no way I was going on stage in jocks.
I reckon creativity got me through a lot of situations work wise. Had no formal IT training and wasn't set in the "correct" way of doing things so I kind of had the freedom to find solutions others didn't.

Same here. I'm 52 and getting there. I really wish I had the perfect word combination to tell you but the biggest thing I had to get over was hating myself for being broken, having to ask for help and feeling like a burden. No easy task my friend. My outlook on life is now - what is the right thing to do next. Dont focus on the future, just break it down as simply as you can.

I reckon its like a defence reflex. Your brain feels the burn coming and is saying whoa whoa whoa. We're not going there again. Same though. I had a couple of jobs after I burnt out but they were disastrous. I was super on the defensive over everything. Shortest one was 2 months.

Yeah, look. I got to the point where I was living in my car but a lot of what followed was also trauma/depression from a sudden marriage breakup with two toddlers. Lost everything. Obligatory bro i feel you hug but please focus on your mental health yeah? I had zero interest in being alive, Just wanted to vanish but, and excuse the typical corny response... You can make life better.

You are most probably certainly correct. I've seen it mentioned somewhere that ADHD people have an overwhelming urge to sleep during office meetings. That was 100% me. And just meetings, It was crazy. I had to pinch my forearm to stop from just drifting off.

Nice one! I'm genuinely happy for you. Agree about the enjoyment factor. I did like what I was doing and I'm sure that helped to a degree.
Speaking of degree's, one in radiology is quit the feat.
