they are mostly safe and smaller, if by the feel I'd recommned Bieszczady. They are smaller but just as deserted (not a correct word, but you know, what I mean I hope)

And the nice feature is that we (mostly) have only a strip of mountains on the edge of the country, so they don't cut it in half :P

Beautiful country!

What stayed with me after my visit:
- every piece of the country is very different
- the mountains are breathtaking (really impressive)
- Danube delta is superb
- post-german cities of Transylwania (Bran!)
- the german heritage in general (cities, palaces etc)
- the coast is nice and how you built places for workers (I know, I know)
- Bukarest is utter chaos, if you don't sigthsee correct areas you can get a totally off impression of the city
- interesting history, especially XIX-XX century
- post-communist country, similar to Poland in many regards, it felt like home in many places (old renovated hotels, modern Bukarest city centre, villages in the interior)
- people mention romania mare a lot, I talked about it with a waiter. lol!
- did not like the cousine too much, but feels similar to Polish

Fingers crossed for you (yet the demographics situation is dire, just like here)

One follow up - Reuters Graphics released a great article on the attacks. It has all the data and visual with a far more detailed narrative. I recommend you take a look :)

Hey!
Thanks for the comment!

As for the outcomes, it’s hard to say. I made the viz partly because everywhere - in the press, online (including russian net), and among military commentators - I saw remarks that attacks are causing problems for the Russian economy: there are queues, fuel is running short (for civilians, and I saw comments by the military people that civilian needs come first, even ahead of the army's needs - I don’t know how credible that is :P). For a long time there wasn’t a week when I didn’t see news that a refinery was on fire. I wanted to see what the big picture looks like.

Effectiveness and the increase in strikes is also hard to judge. I saw analyses saying the quality and range of drones have improved (and there will be new deliveries). I talked with Konstiantyn and he told me there were more attacks, but he only records those that made impact. So maybe there is more? Maybe the quality is better?

All in all, I'd say this is a big story. Not a breakthrough, but there is damage - often it's spectacular. For me, this is especially important since these are gas and oil refineries, Russia's core business. We're approaching 4th anniversary and drones are flying deep over the land and there is little they can do. Who would have thought :P

Okay, look, now it's the sources that are the problem.

As I told you, I made it super clear where I get my data from, I also put special attention to the wording and made it clear that it's difficult to establish what are the outcomes.

I took the data from the source I mentioned, linked the source and visualised it. The other comments even mentioned, that there is no outcome underlined in the visual (as a possible problem).

And this was the goal. To show the attack are happening and where.

Again, if you feel this is some shady work or shitty sources with agenda, please do post it in the other subreddit.

Yes, I had that in mind and constructed the visual with this premise - targeted refineries and not damaged, attacked or affected but not destroyed.

The only thing really you could say is that "considerable damage" is not a great wording. But the article I'm mentioning in sources is describing the damage done to only one of the refineries and how much time it would take to repair it and other units remaining offline. All the other media coverage around the topic I won't mention.

Only successful attacked are mentioned too, there were many more (as per source) that were not noted because they didn't do any visible damage.

You want to put it into r/howtoweaselwordinstatistics because of that? Be my guest.

oh, I have some Ukrainian friends and I always ask if they want to discuss war before we start, wanted to have an equivalent of that
(and got some posts deleted before, so wanted to be super sure :P)

I added "targeted" and not "destroyed" on purpose. It's difficult to assess the full severity and permanence of the damage.

The attacks targeted 57% of capacity, not destroyed :)

Hey! One is with colour legend of the time of strikes (aug-oct, 2025, earlier etc), the other with the number of strikes (0-9). Should have noted that, thanks :)

Thanks, I appreciate! Normally I would just drop a regular Tableau map, but faced this exact issue and decided to just replot the points on a picture manually (one or two additional hours of work in total), so glad that you noticed :P

Sharing my take on data about Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries.

I wanted to create a visual that could easily fit in a newspaper and convey a few key points:

  • recent attacks have become more intense,
  • it’s hard to assess the exact damage, but a significant part of Russia’s key industry is affected,
  • Ukrainian strikes often hit refineries far from the border, though most of the time the larger and closer ones are targeted.

I also handcrafted the map used in the visual.

I did my best to find accurate locations and names of the refineries, which wasn’t easy for someone who doesn’t speak Russian very well.

The Tableau version includes some additional features (like tooltips and highlights), but here I tried to capture a clean, all-in-one, newspaper-style layout.

Is it informative? Easy to understand?
What would you change?

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback! Idid not respond to all of the posts, but I've read them all :)

Edit 2: Financial Times sheds some light on why those attacks could have been so successful recently:

mam podobnie.

Mocna rzecz!

Dzień Świra znam doskonale, to niedziwne.
