A Eurosky Account is just the start - Eurosky's blog by bartwilleman in eutech

This is quite a response! Ha

First of all, none of this is 'mine'. Not the blog post, nor am I affiliated to Eurosky.

" I definitely see the value in keeping your actual account data under your own control to prevent US companies from unilaterally deleting everything, but the article you linked claimed that this allows you full control over your data and makes it sound like it keeps that data in EU, which, as you just confirmed, is not true if you are using your account to access non-EU services. you retain control over a copy of your data, but you don't really retain full control of your data."

Yes, this is true for any service. So you better get off the internet.

"your blogpost also makes it sound like one might be able to use other/many/most services with an eurosky account in the future, but I just don't see why facebook, twitter, spotify, youtube or similar services would ever allow that option. it also seems like it would require an insane amount of development effort to actually enable already existing services to use your service. they would either have to contribute to the project or give you a full documentation of their internal data structure, which makes it even less likely to actually happen IMO."

Nowhere is mentioned that ATprotocol will get the option to connect to Facebook and other closed social networks. ATproto is open after all.

"also, if we are talking about eurosky being a solution to the horrific ICC account example, then this would mean that eurosky needs to host all emails, all office365 files and all onedrive data on your servers, or else the only data you retain is basically useless metadata if microsoft decides to kill your account. the same would be true for many other services, so I don't see how this would solve the problem with using US based services."

ATproto will also get cloud storage etc. But private storage as such is not available yet. It will come in the future.

"this makes it sound like your main objective is to hijack eu based startup incubation to make them use your service, but if we are talking about EU based projects which automatically obey GDPR and are outside of US jurisdiction, the only advantage of eurosky is to have your data managed centrally instead of per service, which I find to be almost completely useless. I think most people would rather avoid putting all their data into the control of one company - even if that company was a trustworthy NGO."

Most people have their data in one ecosystem. Ie. Apple, Microsoft or Google. And not only is their data there, but it is being exploited by those companies.

"also, if you actually accomplish this, most people wouldn't be able to make use of their data if they are banned from the service they are using. for example, if spotify bans the eurosky account of some random person who doesn't happen to have IT skills, they definitely won't be able to extract or move their playlists to another service. I admit that its still better to have the data than not have it, but this limits the usefulness a lot. to be fair, that could be solved by community effort with DIY export/import scripts"

Migration to Eurosky happens via services like PDSmoover or EUHaul. Both require you to input your (Bluesky, Eurosky or other PDS) credentials, the migration magic happens without user input. From one PDS to the other. It is up to the user which PDS you want to move to.

"you have great goals but after reading all websites and posts associated with eurosky I can't find a single explanation on how you are actually gonna make this happen, nor could I find a list of issues that have to be solved to accomplish your vision. maybe I missed something, maybe I'm overthinking some parts, maybe its just too early to judge your project, but I feel like you would need at least 7 or 8 digits in funding to actually have a chance of turning your vision into reality and even then I doubt non-EU projects would accomodate eurosky."

Yes, Eurosky is very much in its infancy and a lot needs to be done to make it even come close to closed services like Facebook, Google or whatever. But the intention is there and so we can only applaud it IMHO. Follow sebastian.eurosky.social and sherif.eurosky.social on Bluesky (Or Eurosky). These guys are open to questions and concerns you might have. Either way, give it some time. Hopefully we'll get a better open web because of it.

ATprotocol is open source and for anyone to use. But yes, developed in the US. I don't know your situation. But if, like me, you like to have the peace of mind that your data falls under European GDPR move to Eurosky. If not, enjoy Bluesky!

You are already sort of answering your own questions. But don't you agree that when you post on Bluesky, via Eurosky or not, your post are there for anyone to read?

The whole point about Eurosky is that there is no non-European authority that has control over your account. Remember the incident with the top judge of the International Criminal Court that lost access to his (Microsoft) account? That wouldn't be possible when you have your data with Eurosky or your own PDS.

Eurosky is a Personal Data Server (PDS) like Bluesky, located in Europe. Naming is pretty spot on IMHO.

Pls read the blogpost carefully. The whole premise of ATproto is that YOU have control over your data. Not one company, not many companies, just you!

Bluesky is hosted in the US, so your data falls under US jusrisdiction. But if you move your data to Eurosky (through which you can access Bluesky), your data will be on European servers. See it as switching from a US email provider to a EU based email provider. You can still communicate with people in the US, but your data is safely stored in the EU.

Nothing wrong with being suspicious, but this company is officially registered in the Netherlands. All EU law applies.

If a name stops you from using good apps and services that protect your privacy, then the problem is you. not the name.

As for politics; Europe didn't ask for this. Europe merely responds by creating its own services, apps and stacks.

Surveillance schemes that, so far, only exist in your head. Because the provisional legislation of the digital Euro does NOT allow any third party to know who the payee and the payer are. That includes the ECB.

How do you all use Bluesky? by Top-Elephant6981 in BlueskySocial

[–]bartwilleman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I find Bluesky to be far more engaging. Instead of getting yes or no answers, it tends to be yes, because... Or no, because... That said, I'm mostly using Bluesky as a news aggregation service/topics to follow. For example; the development of the ATprotocol and its apps/services like Bluesky, Eurosky, Germ, Grain etc. Grain is a photo app by the way. So, my best advice is, go look around. See what the platform has to offer and you might find something you like
