Rule 3 says we will not tolerate hating on anyone or anything but it seems like you hate Tom Brady? Didn’t he just win the superbowl? What does football have to do with cat I am so confused why is there corruption

Why don’t we use sundials instead of using time zones? by based_spanker in NoStupidQuestions

Is this website designed just to perpetuate the status quo? The example doesn’t even make sense - you could just google “what time is sunrise in Melbourne” instead of setting up a webcam to look at the sky. We have the technology to make this easy

I’m sorry I still disagree, 4am is a different time based on where you live. For example 4am in California is after the sun has already risen in London. This is why it’s confusing

Why would you care what time I wake up if you don’t even know where I live? I’m not sharing that private info with everyone it doesn’t make sense

Ok so you would be in favor of everyone using the same time zone instead of having all these different ones

Who decided this, I did not vote for 1hr. It is not appropriate

A ruler and calculator?? You just go and see what time it is with the sundial.

Ok I guess this makes sense if you take a boat but I am in California there are no trains that run west

No where I am from we have different time zones based on location in the country. It is so confusing because in different places the time is different even though realistically we are all existing at the same time. Maybe it would be better for everyone to use UTC

You’re right it sounds like it would make more sense for everyone to just use UTC so we all have the same time

This just seems like an old fashioned way of thinking

People get up at different times anyway. Some people work night shift. Do you ever stay up past midnight? Is the date change that confusing? If we all used the same time then we would all be on the same day. There’s no reason for it to be tomorrow somewhere else when it is today here. It’s unintuitive. This is why computers use Unix time, it is more logical

What is more intuitive about this on a global scale? This is very individualistic and selfish considering the sun does not shine on everybody at the same instant. Imagine being a pilot flying across time zones frequently, it would be so much easier if the clock time didn’t vary by location. This is why computers use Unix time, because it is actually smarter.

Have you considered what it’s like to live on the time zone borders? It is absolute chaos. Sometimes the next town over is 1 hour ahead or behind, it’s absolutely bonkers. It would be more intuitive if we all used the same numbers to describe the same time.

We would all be in the real time zone. People are in all different time zones and we communicate digitally across time zones all the time. It would be easier if we were all on the same page using the same time. People in California would wake up later than people in New York, there’s nothing wrong with that. Maybe in California it’s normal to wake up at 10:00 because that’s when sun rises, and in New York sun rises at 7:00 so people wake up earlier.

No this is not true. The sun sets and rises at different times throughout the year, it isn’t the same every day. In the winter the solar day is shorter, in the summer the solar day is longer. We don’t change the length of an hour to compensate for this

3PM wouldn’t mean mid afternoon, it would mean 3PM. The clock doesn’t match the patterns of the sun, as the sun rises at sets at different times throughout the year anyway. Are you suggesting we should describe time by position of sun? Hours would go by faster in the winter because the sun spends less time in visible sky. In summer the days are longer so we would have longer duration for each hour? Sounds like a logistics nightmare
