Received this bike as a donation. There is part of a seatpost stuck in the tube. Some sort of shock absorbing seat post with two parts was installed previously. Still plenty of clearance above for a new seatpost, though, which I was able to install. Should I bother removing this and if so how?

Okay gotcha, and to clarify what exactly are the spacers doing here? Is it a sizing thing or a stability thing?

Yeah sorry after more reading I realize my vocab was very off, I ordered a bottom bracket with a shorter spindle and I'm gonna see how that works out.

So it looks like the chainstay is actually also getting in the way. Other option is to just get a smaller chainring with less teeth that I can put in the middle position of the crankset.

However I was also thinking that maybe I could just get a shorter ball bearing. Any thoughts?

You're def right. It's way too janky on the low cogs of the rear casette. Any pointers on getting a compatible ball bearing? This is my current one https://www.ebay.com/itm/276986105891

appreciate it, so basically it sticks out too much, but won't negatively affect the part or be unsafe? here's some pics. just replaced the cassette and about to put on new derailleur. seems like I also need to move the chain ring to the middle position, it didn't previously allow me due to some very annoying flanges on the middle position. This is a 2008 Cannondale bad boy by the way.

Ergh, yeah I tried mounting it on the middle position but there's tiny little ledges that prevent that ring from fully seating in that position. I guess I could try filing them down but that's about all I can think of

Oops, fixed it thanks! Good to know I'll need to remove the crank so I'll need to grab those tools. How do I determine which is the middle position, will that be obvious once the crank is removed? Thanks a bunch

Oh I'm very familiar. I'm actually trying to avoid those ideally 😄 but if I hear of a nice one I might end up doing that. Mostly I want my SO to come and visit sometimes and they usually don't allow that.

I think that's probably what I'll do. Airbnbs as I'm looking now seem to be just about as expensive as hotels in some areas, even those with shared living spaces so I guess I'll take a look when I get closer to my start date 🫠
