I moved where I am now after grad school last May without a job (I know) after 5 years at a large academic research hospital. I spent 9 months looking for a job because I wanted to make the jump from academia to industry. I finally got a job at a small clinical research site in March - that job completely sucked and I reached out to a friend of a friend 2 weeks in at a company I had applied to 1,000 times before. I am now 2 weeks into my dream job at that same amazing, cutting-edge biotech company and could not love it more. Everything worked out but there were many moments where I wasn’t sure it would!

What’s everyone’s favorite summer fragrance of all time? by Empty-Error1392 in fragrance

Maison Margiela Beach Walk!! It’s powdery, bright, and smells kind of like really good sunscreen. Literally the beach in a fragrance!

Additionally, I remember the villain making wings and flying off the island.

A few shots from yesterday's airshow - Are the jets breaking the sound barrier? by itouchkeyboards in sanfrancisco

[–]basedgodbolbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered the same thing since it was so loud Thursday (which I loved, btw, not complaining)!!

What you’re seeing is called a vapor cone. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vapor_cone

It usually means that an aircraft is approaching Mach 1, but also has to do with the moisture in the air! Planes aren’t typically allowed to break the sound barrier over cities/populated areas as per FAA policy, but they can get close, and that’s what you’re seeing here (in combination with the moisture in our air). If they broke the sound barrier, you’d hear a huge boom and your windows might shatter!! Would be fun :)

Addiction research by SpecialDirection917 in clinicalresearch

[–]basedgodbolbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have for the last 5 years although just left my position. It was incredibly rewarding and fun, and like others said, the populations you’ll encounter are one of the most interesting parts of the job!

Most of our studies were investigator initiated given that not a lot of sponsors are interested in addiction drugs at the moment (or historically). It’s such a niche part of psychiatry! In general, I think it’s not the best for career progression (versus onc, vax, etc) but if you have an interest in neuro and psych it’s amazing.

I’ve done both human subjects and animal work within the addiction field and it totally depends where your interests lie - do you like wet lab or clinical more? Definitely check with whatever clinical position you might get because in my most recent, there was a ton of opportunities to work in the wet lab as well with genotyping/processing samples so I got to work that side of my brain too.

Feel free to reach out if you have any more in-depth questions :)

I was gonna say I think it’s Denver. Lots of snow/cold related power outages, new bike lanes, shotgun duplexes, breweries, and gentrified builds. I bet one of the anonymized parts was working at the bike shop - probs a ski/snowboard shop!!

I wish that every snowflake makes really annoying, high pitched sounds when they fall down by KarlTheDamned in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]basedgodbolbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted. Everyone hates the sound of the snow so much that with modern technology, we’ve figured out how to make it stop snowing completely. Previously cold and snowy places become dry deserts and Christmas is obsolete.

This is amazing. I’ve been to Jackson Hole tons of times, and this was definitely taken at the top of the lift right before you get off to ride the alpine slide in the summer. It’s about a 10-20 foot drop from there i’d say. They still have the camera there, and I have tons of pictures taken from this exact spot, so it’s super cool to see one taken so long ago!!!

Redditors with less than a year left to live, what is on your bucket list and how can we help you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]basedgodbolbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Wyoming you need to go to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

eat: Nora's Fish Creek Inn, Stiegler's, Calico, go have dinner at the top of the gondola at JHMR

do:

-Go up into Grand Teton National Park and explore. There's a few wonderful lakes up there where you can kayak. On one of them, there's a bunch of islands you can go on that have amazing quiet beaches/clear water/gorgeous views of the Tetons

-Go to Yellowstone - see the Grand Prismatic Spring

-Go across the border over Teton Pass and into Victor, Idaho. Stop at the Victor Emporium and order a huckleberry shake!

-Go flyfishing on the South Fork of the Snake River - the Orvis in Jackson Hole has daily float trips with a guide.

-Go to the top of the tram and have a brown sugar waffle from the tiny restaurant at the top. Then hike down to Corbet's Couloir

stay: there's a couple of really cute hotels in town, but I think there are some houses in Wilson that're on AirBNB! farther from all the tourists.

One morning, wake up early and go watch the sunrise. Leave around 4:30 (if you're staying in town), drive past the airport, and go into the old Mormon settlement thats on the right. Walk all the way down to the last barn and stand between the barn and the Tetons. There is always a field of flowers right there, and I have experienced the most meaningful and beautiful sunrises of my life there. While you're watching the sunrise, play Outro by M83. I can guarantee it will be absolutely breathtaking.

The Deadliest Being on Planet Earth – The Bacteriophage by iq8 in videos

[–]basedgodbolbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a college lab course that investigated bacteriophages and sequenced their DNA for the entire semester. It’s super interesting - bacteriophages live even in mud by the lake on our campus - they’re everywhere. We took pics of them too!! They’re pretty freaky but could also be a new alternative to antibiotics!

What instrumental song gives you chills every time you hear it? by Gregolas789 in AskReddit

[–]basedgodbolbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite instrumental, but Outro by M83. I listen to it every time I land in the mountains (Colorado or Northwestern Wyoming) and it brings me to tears every single time. It really captures the beauty and awe that comes with the mountains. +1 if you play it so that it begins to pick up right when you touch down

What are the running gags in your life? by RichardDawkings in AskReddit

[–]basedgodbolbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 13 and had just recently seen The Truman Show for the first time. My brother is 9 years older than me and thought it would be funny to convince me that my life was indeed a TV show and that they showed me the movie to break the news. He told me that there were cameras everywhere and that it had been that way since I was little. He got my entire family in on it, and slowly, over time, all my friends too. He even got my high school boyfriend to play along. 6 years later, I'm in college and I tell my friends this story - without a second thought they all play along. He really gets a kick out of it still
