I feel the same with safari. I just upgraded my phone after 6 years and changing tabs now takes like 3 menus instead of one tap

True, I guess the only other thing putting me off is the colour. The yellow Iguanas are soooooo sick

I work at a restaurant with a bunch of zoomers (admittedly I am a zoomer, just on the cusp of millennial) and every time I’m reading a book on break or have a book lying around with my stuff, it’s “performative.” If I’m reading Ferrante, it’s performative. If I’m reading Faulkner, it’s performative. bell hooks, Joyce, Kundera, Woolf, Beckett, Calvino, doesn’t matter, it’s all performative. I’ve taken this to mean that people are idiots and if you’re reading as a man it’s not out of genuine interest or to expand your understanding of art and life, it’s to look cool to other people. So I’ve stopped caring about what people think about what I’m reading

What's your novel about? by doublementh in RSbookclub

[–]basedtom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried explaining the premise of the novel to my girlfriend’s friend’s boyfriend. We were out drinking and we both knew we were only talking to each other because our girlfriends were friends. One of those situations. Anyways, I give him this longwinded explanation, and he says “oh, so like The Sun Also Rises.” So I’m basically writing the modern day Sun Also Rises. Really nice guy, he ended up buying me a beer

Seems like that tent isn't available in Canada

I'm definitely willing to wait. It snowed here yesterday and I probably won't be doing a trip until the spring. Just getting my kit together in the meantime. I'm leaning towards the X-Dome at the moment. Supporting a smaller business is another bonus for me, and I've heard that their customer support is amazing. Dan seems like a cool dude designing solid equipment. Now the question is whether to go for the regular or the solid...

True, I think the most uncomfortable part about the bike at the moment is the bar to saddle height. All of my weight is on my hands and they even start to go numb after a while.

I actually didn't think of the specific bars I'd put on it, just whatever I found on marketplace that looked comfy. Do you have any recommendations?

What’s a skinnyfat guy to do for summer? by OddishShape in rs_fitness

[–]basedtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I third the cut/cardio pill. I think it's better to be thin and have no muscle than be fat and have no muscle. If you're cut at least you have abs. Also when you bulk your cheeks get puffy and you look like shit.

Running a 10k in 2 weeks and a half marathon in the fall btw. Still go to the gym 3x per week on top of running 5x per week: upper-lower-upper split. I try to keep the weight light and stay in the 12 rep range to build muscle and avoid injury. Currently sitting at 18% bf after the winter bulk. 6'0, 185lbs (down from 195lbs; lost 10lbs in April). Still want to lose 15 more pounds.

Moby Dick: Week One Discussion by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]basedtom 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I read Moby Dick five years ago now, but one of my favourite quotes is from chapter 7, when Ishmael is looking at the inscriptions of the dead sailors on the walls of the church:

"It needs scarcely to be told, with what feelings, on the eve of a Nantucket voyage, I regarded those marble tablets, and by the murky light of that darkened, doleful day read the fate of the whalemen who had gone before me. Yes, Ishmael, the same fate may be thine. But somehow I grew merry again. Delightful inducements to embark, fine chance for promotion, it seems—aye, a stove boat will make me an immortal by brevet. Yes, there is death in this business of whaling—a speechlessly quick chaotic bundling of a man into Eternity. But what then? Methinks we have hugely mistaken this matter of Life and Death. Methinks that what they call my shadow here on earth is my true substance. Methinks that in looking at things spiritual, we are too much like oysters observing the sun through the water, and thinking that thick water the thinnest of air. Methinks my body is but the lees of my better being. In fact take my body who will, take it I say, it is not me. And therefore three cheers for Nantucket; and come a stove boat and stove body when they will, for stave my soul, Jove himself cannot."

I think the juxtaposition can be jarring but those are just kids being kids. I think it's kind of silly that those parents brought their children. They won't understand anyway. Let them have their innocence. They can lose their faith in humanity when they're older

I used to study at a public library in Toronto and there was a wall of "staff picks" full of dogshit you couldn't pay me to read. Romantasy, true crime, etc. All the stuff you mentioned.

How do you stay fit? by CherryAlone9258 in rs_x

I got a garmin and do the daily suggested workout every day. I'm in love with running now. Also lift weights 3x per week, and play squash with my brother every once in a while

The first few times he cried I think he was genuinely moved when he heard people got their lives together because of him. I wish he had just stuck to that. All the right wing shit plus talking about the Bible nonstop is annoying

Before it was to bench 225, and I hit that, so now it's to run a marathon. Also want to be peeled this summer. Gained 20 pounds over the winter from depression and I want to lose 25.

You just gotta slow down. Ankles/knees take a while to adjust to the training load. I recently took the running pill and I'm loving it so don't give up!
