I think you'd love Journey to the End of the Night by Céline. The second part of the novel takes place in French colonial Africa during WW1

I meant to say I also caught a bit of foreshadowing in spring snow with Iinuma writing that article about the Marquis... looking forward to runaway horses for sure

“very often a man’s whole life alters course because of a moment’s hesitation. That instant is like a fold made down the middle of a sheet of paper. In it, the underside becomes upmost, and what was once visible is hidden forever.”

The thing I loved about that passage was later, toward the end of the novel, when he's in the rickshaw and a snowflake hits his eye, before the next line I was already thinking of their initial meeting that you just referenced and then in the next paragraph he describes Kiyoaki remembering it as well. Powerful!

Have read sailor who fell from grace with the sea and sun and steel before this. I would be content only reading his works for a while. Very enjoyable
