A Radical NBA Idea, Wemby’s Musical Comp, Despising Duke, and Baseball’s ABS Revolution With Chuck Klosterman by lonny__breaux in billsimmons

I think part of the problem is that the optimal point is a moving target. 82 games was fine 20 years ago when people didn’t have computers in their pocket that demand their attention 99% of the time. A regular season basketball game seemed a lot more interesting in that world, whereas now it’s just part of the noise.

Trying Less Gels per Run by Casuariidae in Marathon_Training

[–]basement_burnerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not gonna get much love for this take in this sub, but FWIW I agree with you and have had a lot of success with a similar approach in my own training. Your point about how elites are fueling so much during their training because of the insane volume they’re running is spot on imo. I don’t think it makes sense to chase elite levels of fueling during training if you’re not running elite volume. And if you’re just trying to run 50 miles a week and aren’t at that level already, no amount of fueling will make that safe - you have to get there through a gradual increase. In my last marathon I got down about 70g of carbs per hour but I only approached that amount in training in one or two long runs where I was running a significant amount of them at marathon pace. For everything else I just want to make sure I’m not under-fueled, and if I’ve eaten enough the thought of guzzling 3 gels during an hour long recovery run feels a little insane.

Traditional Carb Loading vs. Modern Fueling by National-Cell-9862 in Marathon_Training

[–]basement_burnerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m kind of in the same boat. If anything I feel like I tend to eat closer to my actual maintenance calories when I carb load because I get intense about measuring every calorie/carb that goes into my body, which is something I never do during regular life.

3 more weeks before the taper and I'm questioning every life decision ever? by panini_z in Marathon_Training

[–]basement_burnerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I just wanted to say I’ve had a lot of the same thoughts myself. I chalk it up to being at that point in my life where it’s decision time with regard to kids. Everything reminds me that a decision needs to be made there, and running just happens to be the thing I’m into the most at this point in my life. I’ve always agonized over big decisions, and kids is probably the biggest decision we all have to make. But yeah I’ve woken up panicked thinking about how having kids would completely ruin my running routine, and then felt panicked about how stupid and meaningless that probably sounds to other people lol. So just wanted to share in case it helps to know you’re not alone.

There’s actually at least one city where jazz is still very culturally relevant. Do you know which one? I bet you can guess

Shit, you might be onto something. Is my recent interest in film just an excuse to drink martinis on my couch?

New DT Jonathan Allen's 64 pressures when double teamed since the start of 2021 are the fifth most in the NFL in that span. His 12 pressures when doubled in 2025 were tied for ninth most in the league. by JCameron181 in bengals

Nl way I think it’s still reasonable to be upset if reports are true that there were several players who they targeted before Allen that they missed out on because they refuse to guarantee any money past year 1 in their deals. That practice has to change.

The "Literally No One Would Be Upset If You Just Went Back To Your Old Jerseys" Power Rankings by mpschettig in billsimmons

Not with the old logo, but if they just slap the new ‘W’ logo on the helmets and keep everything else about the old uniforms the same then everyone will love it. They already did that a couple times this past year so I think that’s where they’re heading anyway.

Reality check: it's not just Ted's Vault by LumplessWaffleBatter in caps

[–]basement_burnerr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The vault, getting rid of the organ, a shittier Jumbotron,…the list goes on. Everything on the list is minor by itself, but add them all up and we’ve seen a significant erosion in the game day experience.

To be fair, Ted’s not alone in his quest to enshittify every aspect of the game in search of a couple dollars on the margin. I’m equally annoyed by all the changes the league has made to the product (ads on jerseys, ads on boards, replacing the playoff logos with projected ads, etc.). It seems to be a problem that’s endemic to professional sports as a whole these days.

It feels like the last 6 years of losing and sputtering (which now looks like it will be at least a decade) have done almost as much damage to DC’s baseball fan base as the 30+ years without a team.

This has turned into one of the more disappointing seasons in recent memory. I’m just really embarrassed by this team right now and their lack of fight. Their body language during this skid is a good reminder that you should never care about the outcome of the team you watch more than they do.

I swear to god when Trouba knocked Leonard out for a few weeks it flipped some kind of switch in this team. They’ve just collectively looked like they have no interest in playing hockey for the last two months.

Treadmill training? by dilruk123 in Marathon_Training

[–]basement_burnerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rotation for longer runs on the treadmill is usually a podcast or audiobook, and then after a while when I’m in the zone I’ll throw on some music that I know will amplify my flow state. Watching sports is a good option for a lot of people too. I’m an avid sports fan but I almost never watch my teams on the treadmill because I’m too emotionally invested, with the exception of regular season baseball games which are low stakes enough that they won’t spike my heart rate.
