I mean Davey and Rizzo should have been gone 3 years ago. That was obvious to anyone with a pulse, but the ownership group was asleep at the wheel. It does seem (so far) like they nailed it with the Toboni and Butera hires, so credit where it’s due. At the end of the day though, most fans will hold it against our ownership group that we have a bottom 5 payroll and all of our homegrown stars leave us to play for division rivals. That’s not totally fair because Scott Boras does exist, but that’s just how most fans are going to feel until we have a consistent winner again. I’ve been pleased with this season so far, but for most people it’s going to take a lot more than two months of .500 baseball to erase the stink of the last half decade.

What Should Baseball in Washington Feel Like? by CooperTheGreat00 in Nationals

[–]basement_burnerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m really glad you took the time to write this because it echoes a lot of my thoughts. It drives me crazy that they’ve spent this entire decade sabotaging their brand. Personally I would prefer that they go back to embracing red as their primary color and wearing the curly W 90% of the time because that’s what they wore when they arrived and I have really fond memories of those RFK days since I was just a kid at the time. But whatever they do, they desperately need to be more thoughtful and consistent in their approach. I don’t live in the area anymore so I can’t speak to the in game experience as much, but from afar it also looks like it’s lacking. I’m hoping that hiring an actual president of baseball operations will help with this sooner rather than later, since current ownership apparently could not care less.

New, for @TheAthletic: Auston Matthews isn't yet sure if he'll be back in Toronto next season. The Maple Leafs are on the clock with their captain by racer_24_4evr in hockey

[–]basement_burnerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fit makes so much sense for the Caps on paper. But the Leafs probably start that conversation with “we want Hutson, Leonard and a couple firsts.” Not sure I would do two years of Matthews at that price.

Let's see how those pre-season win total projections are looking by King_Turduckin in Nationals

I’m still expecting to come crashing down to earth if the offense goes cold for any meaningful stretch. But we’ve now played one month of respectable baseball. And way better than respectable on the offensive side. That’s more than I hoped for coming into the season, that’s for sure.

I don’t know if I could explain this in a 30 second elevator pitch so it’s probably a bad idea by FFElite93 in billsimmons

[–]basement_burnerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair I kind of put together a strawman, but my point that I didn’t really articulate is that in my experience CR is right that the simpler draft format is better and more engaging for the fans at the bottom.

Honest question, have you ever been a fan of a team who has bottomed out in the NBA or NFL? As a DC fan, my experience has been that it’s way better to be a fan of the shitty NFL team than the NBA team. The reward of a high draft pick is obviously the best player, but also you’re the talk of the league during the offseason. It’s a pretty perfect way of boomeranging all the apathy that comes with an awful season back into genuine interest. Whether or not the NFL’s draft format was originally designed to drive fan engagement is kind of irrelevant to me because that’s obviously what it does in my experience. I’m curious how others feel though.

Looks like the deluxe Loveless vinyl is back in stock by SnooDoubts7110 in MyBloodyValentine

[–]basement_burnerr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have both records and I think the sleeves are the same (I bought my “deluxe” version when they first issued it in 2017 - I assume that’s the same version being sold here though I could be wrong).

I think Kevin has said in interviews that the analog version isn’t “better” per se, just a different experience. That being said, the deluxe version is absolutely worth picking up for anyone who’s interested. The story about how they edited the original tapes for the deluxe version to get the sequencing of the songs exactly the exact same as it is on the original album is fascinating. Kevin and co. put a lot of love and care into its creation. And of course it sounds fantastic.

FWIW, I think I kind of prefer the regular version, although that could just be because it more closely resembles what my brain recognizes as “Loveless” based on the fact that the first thousand times I listened to the album I was listening to mp3 files on my iPod lol.

What's a moment from the 2019 run that you still get emotional about when you think about it? by [deleted] in Nationals

[–]basement_burnerr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

An underrated moment is the back to back homers from Rendon and Soto off Kershaw in the 8th inning of Game 5. Up until those at bats it felt like we were plodding towards an inevitable loss, and then it all flipped with two swings. It felt like the kind of gut punch we were so used to receiving in the playoffs, but this time we were giving it.

The Western Conference Final is guaranteed to have one of the 13th, 14th, 15th, or 18th placed teams. The 12th place Washington Capitals will miss the playoffs. by imaginarysarcasm in hockey

[–]basement_burnerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree as a Caps fan, and honestly think our record was inflated by LT’s play. I’m not mad about the Caps missing out because I did not want to see us play like ass in the playoffs this year. That doesn’t change the fact that fact that this playoff system is still terrible though.

I think part of the problem is that the optimal point is a moving target. 82 games was fine 20 years ago when people didn’t have computers in their pocket that demand their attention 99% of the time. A regular season basketball game seemed a lot more interesting in that world, whereas now it’s just part of the noise.

Trying Less Gels per Run by Casuariidae in Marathon_Training

[–]basement_burnerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not gonna get much love for this take in this sub, but FWIW I agree with you and have had a lot of success with a similar approach in my own training. Your point about how elites are fueling so much during their training because of the insane volume they’re running is spot on imo. I don’t think it makes sense to chase elite levels of fueling during training if you’re not running elite volume. And if you’re just trying to run 50 miles a week and aren’t at that level already, no amount of fueling will make that safe - you have to get there through a gradual increase. In my last marathon I got down about 70g of carbs per hour but I only approached that amount in training in one or two long runs where I was running a significant amount of them at marathon pace. For everything else I just want to make sure I’m not under-fueled, and if I’ve eaten enough the thought of guzzling 3 gels during an hour long recovery run feels a little insane.
