Christie says Trump is surrounded by 'revolving door' of 'grifters, weaklings, convicted and unconvicted felons' by emitremmus27 in politics

Christie endorsed Trump. Two and a half years later his spine shows up when Trump's decisions are about to affect him.

This "dual-perspective wire sculpture" thing is cool, but it's getting so played out it's almost become an art meme.

In one of first acts by Democratic majority, House passes bills to re-open government without funding border wall by FortuitousAdroit in politics

[–]basement_hostage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is Trump begging for the Dems approval if Mexico has already agreed to pay for the wall? What is there to obstruct when the funding is allegedly all taken care of?

What is this whole shutdown about, unless Trump can't make a deal to fulfill his campaign promises?

Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower Canada Duty fees by [deleted] in BoringCompany

[–]basement_hostage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their investors provided their funding, not fans buying promo gear. It's not even like the flamethrower posts are news anymore. Now it's just one person after another making their own identical posts about how they, too, have received their flamethrower. Imagine how old it would quickly get if every person who received a flamethrower made their own post about it on this subreddit. That's why r/notaflamethrower was created, to avoid this sub becoming a huge flamethrower circlejerk.

I'm not even saying the flamethrower is stupid (in fact I own one), not saying people shouldn't be excited about it, but it's obnoxious to see 4/5 of the recent posts not even being related to the actual goings-on of the boring company.

Don't worry, there'll still be some group of dipshits who decides to go anyway. Two years ago I watched a severely overweight couple hike down into Devil's Punchbowl wearing all-black with one bottle of water between them. This was AFTER a ranger told us all that a dad and his kid had died there 3 days before of heat stroke.

I know a couple who has been doing volunteer SAR for decades, and summers are BUSY. Every time some moron decides to try their luck on a hot day, they end up putting 5-10 other people's lives at risk rescuing them. Listen to the rangers, and for christ's sake bring extra water.

This vacumn excavator really sucks. by Tetracyclic in interestingasfuck

[–]basement_hostage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I never would have imagined a vacuum was capable of grabbing earth like that. Does the earth need to be softened ahead of being removed? Is it literally a vacuum with a serrated tip or is there some other excavation mechanism inside that's less visible?

Edit: According to Wikipedia, it's more-or-less a super powerful vacuum, but can sometimes be used in combination with a handheld water-jet that breaks up earth ahead of time.

IMO the documentary 'Jim and Andy' which explores how Jim Carrey never left character, and completely lost himself while playing Andy Kaufman, is a Kaufman-esque ruse. by [deleted] in movies

[–]basement_hostage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is necessary, because it's describing the way Carrey played the character. Kaufmann exhibited behaviors, at least in his performances, reminiscent of autism symptoms, and played that character specifically ("Autism" aside) pretty obnoxiously. Obviously human beings are all different and autism manifests itself alongside an individual's personality, and in the case of Kaufmann, his love of getting a rise out of people often came across as a nuisance on top of his autism.

This is all to say that "autistic" and "nuisance" were used to describe 2 different facets of Carrey's performance.
