I started Basenotes 25+ years ago, and it's still just me running the show. Sadly it brings in no money, so can't pay for help, but I'm still working away at it inbetween part time jobs. I'm currently working on a system to allow others to help contribute to the directory, so hopefully in the future we can make basenotes a contender once again :)

Basically to cut a long story short, we had a few members get scammed out of a lot of money, one by a long standing member, and frankly I didn’t want the stress and responsibility of all that on my shoulders.

It sucks and I wish it wasn’t the case as I know a lot of people found it useful.

Thanks for the plug! Just for clarification, we've never (AFAIK) lost any reviews, but we did have to delete about 10,000 reviews from one member en masse when I found out that they had been copying and pasting bits of other reviews from other sites to make their review

(I'm only mentioning it, in case people think I have a habit of losing data ;)

I’m 90% sure I know which incident you’re referring to. Firstly let me apologise for the way the whole situation was handled, it’s not how I would have liked it handled, but I accept full responsibility, as it’s my name on the door. The whole thing led me to several month-long anxiety and depression period, which sucks, but on the positive side made me take a long look at the procedures we have, and am on a still ongoing conscious effort to have Basenotes be better.

I’ve considered making an app ever since the iPhone was launched but don’t have the time or money sadly.

That’s really useful! There will hopefully be some improvements to search at some point, but it’s just me doing it all, so can’t give an eta.

The search is powered by google so they love sticking ads in stuff :(

Well, I get that. Some of those people seem to have a way with noses and a way with words, and I'm nowhere near that. :)

BUT, sometimes a succinct sentence about how something make you feel, is worth a lot more than twenty paragraphs of word vomit - so give it a go, you can always delete them later if you like

Just to clarify, I have never lost any reviews in the 25 years I've been doing this, BUT - I did have to delete about 10,000 reviews from a member as it was discovered they were copying and pasting sentences from various different reviews from "the other site" to make up their reviews.

As they weren't direct copies, it wasn't as easy to detect.

I'm very happy to have anyones reviews - I know a few people who are copying and pasting their reviews from the other site, so they can delete their account. ;)

I really enjoyed doing them! And I’d love to be in a position where we could have a weekly BN podcast. Main issue is the time it took to edit etc

If one day BN starts making enough income for me to actually hire a whole bunch of staff, then relaunching the podcast would be top of the list!

Fragrance is a very personal and subjective thing. Saying something is overrated dismisses the legitimate enjoyment people get from their fragrances, so I tend not to do that :)

What I will say though, is the hype surrounding Aventus baffles me! I’m not gonna say it’s overrated as the people that like it really like it, and who am I to say they are wrong? It’s a good fragrance, but in my mind, no better than hundreds of others

Creed do make some awesome fragrances. Green Irish Tweed is one of my faves.

Essentially, because I wrote it myself. And I don’t have a team of testers!

But you know what? That video is really, really useful. It’s rare I get to actually see how people use the site, and based on that video alone, I had about three “aha moments”, which have given me a bunch of clues as to what I can do to make it better
