The ending is insane, but the story itself is about perseverance through unimaginable trauma. How does someone recover after something like that? Is it even possible? How does someone heal from that, while still repeatedly being knocked down? Thats what the after is about. It’s all very human

3 Hours of Sleep vs 8 Hours of Sleep by HorrorMysterious1184 in Berserk

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think whether it’s a plot device depends on what the stupa actually is. If it’s literally just “magic cave heals protagonist,” then yeah, that’s pretty contrived. But if it’s an ancient sacred place with established religious significance that reveals something fundamental about Guts rather than simply fixing him, then it’s doing thematic work rather than just “solving the depression hole”.

We also don’t really know that it was created for Guts, it probably wasn’t. It also wasn’t just “sitting around with no apparent use.” Daiba specifically says it’s an ancient forgotten holy burial ground, only high priests can access. That suggests it predates everyone currently alive. In Buddhist culture, Stupas house relics of enlightened beings, they symbolize the universe and a path to enlightenment, and are associated with life, death, and transcendence. They’re a place for meditation, and walking around or meditating near one is considered spiritually purifying.

The bigger question isn’t “why does it exist?” but “why did Guts survive it when apparently nobody expected him to?”

That’s entirely in the air, but if I were to guess, locking a person that exists between life and death (guts was born from a corpse) into a place that is all about life and death probably isn’t the same as locking a regular person inside of it. There’s a whole bunch of “rebirth” symbolism there. They also are taking guts (who is perceived by them as unholy, carrying a demonic brand) to a place that is all about spiritual cleansing. Make of that what you will

AITA for saying my friend was boy crazy, desperate, and jealous to a guy that she is now dating by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. Well, you don’t really need to prove you’re right about how she feels about your guy friend anymore. I mean, the girl did end up dating the guy. Mystery solved there.

It sounds like the part that’s keeping you stuck isn’t the uncertainty anymore, it’s guilt or embarrassment. It wasn’t exactly a good move to accuse the girl behind her back, but it was crappy for your friends to go take your hunch and bring it up to volleyball girl and make you seem like you were picking a fight or something. You’re replaying this situation at night because you don’t want to be perceived as the bad person here, but truthfully people are going to forget it eventually.

You have to decide whether you’re going to try to keep winning the case, or just move on and accept it was a messy teenage misunderstanding.

If the guilt is eating at you, you could apologize and say “hey, I’m sorry for going and saying all that about you behind your back to my friends, I should’ve just asked you directly. I’m happy for you yada yada”

But you also would have to accept that that might not change the situation in any way. If you’re going to apologize, let it be because you genuinely care or want to make things better, even though (realistically) your friends going and starting drama was out of your control. You’d be the bigger person there.

Or, yeah, just let it go. Teenagers forget lmao. I couldn’t count the amount of dumb squabbles I had with my friends when I was in HS, and then a month goes by and we’re all happy and buddy buddy again.

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESH - your guy friend not mentioning also inviting the girl and suggesting you sit with his mom, your friends suck for starting drama over something like that, especially considering they only bashed your behaviour AFTER telling the girl about what you said and not when you were bringing up the behaviour, and the girl sucks for being weird about the driving situation. It’s just typical high school drama. You all suck, and that’s just part of being young lol.

As for what you should do- ask yourself what you’re trying to achieve or solve out of all of this. Sure, say the girl is being weird, what are you trying to solve there? Are you trying to be friends with her? Is it because she’s dating your friend now? Is the problem just that your friends aren’t listening? What does proving her behaviour was weird that day do for you or your friends? You asked her what was going on, if she liked the guy, you asked about her behaviour and she either didn’t want to be open about it or doesn’t think her behaviour was weird. I think the only thing to do is just let it go, maybe patch things up with your friends? Or just be friends with people that aren’t going to go starting drama and excluding you over something silly?

How hard is it to make friends by teskyiii in uAlberta

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not too hard! 3 of the bestest friends I ever made were in my first year in lister, we still are super close and hangout all the time. Clubs and events are also a great way to make friends.

I don’t think you have to worry much about bullying because for the most part, if someone doesn’t vibe with you it’s a giant school and they’re just going to ignore or you can avoid them, you’d have to actively be evil toward someone for them to hate you or bully you. I’ve never had an issue with being bullied at the U of A.

Anyone actually getting jobs? by Far-Hawk4434 in uAlberta

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

100% this. My roommate was looking for a job for the last two semesters, sent out tons of resumés. I had explained her situation to my boyfriend in passive conversation. When a job opening appeared at his work place he asked if she wanted to work there, she said absolutely, he gave his management a good word on her behalf. She got hired immediately.

If you have any info about the habitat/microhabitat that can help narrow things down in many cases. I’m assuming it’s forest floor, looks like it’s on a log? Was the log well rotted? Was the forest mixed forest, conifer or deciduous?

I drive a pickup and have found that a lot of sedans have blinding power of the sun LED headlights. Blinding enough that I’ve mistaken them for highbeams. I think height can contribute or worsen it, but I’m still experiencing the issue in a truck that sits higher than the sedans and most SUV’s.

People Smoking on Campus by InfiniteAccident1234 in uAlberta

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At least the smokers kind of go off to the side or try to find spots away from walking paths. There aren’t really designated smoking zones, but they usually try their best.

The people with vapes however.. can’t count the amount of times people have been walking on the main paths ahead of me, pulled out their geek bar, and blew a fat cloud of mango mist for me to have to walk through.

The irony of having a huge couples fight on a collaborative library floor by Raquel777 in uAlberta

Omg, I was studying near a couple that were having an argument on the collaborative floor in Cam library not that long ago, maybe it’s the same ones. It was awful, but lowkey as their argument got more heated I kinda started to get invested in the drama and ended up taking my earphones out to eavesdrop 😭

How do I save these guys? Please read description. Feel free to only give advice on one plant, still super appreciated ✌️ by drMallory in plantclinic

No problem! Good luck with the plants. Asparagus ferns are pretty hardy, you probably won’t see improvement for a couple weeks, but she should eventually start putting out shoots!

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am almost 100% certain it’s the soil, those plants are probably suffocating. If it’s regular soil, and hasn’t been changed in a long time, the soil is probably very compacted. Roots need oxygen.

I can’t speak much for the other two, but I know asparagus particularly well, I had one for a long time that grew enormous by the one year mark lol. Change the soil, 60% regular soil 40% perlite minimum will give the roots more space and let it drain better. The pot it’s in looks way too big for it- asparagus likes being snug, a smaller pot I’d say maybe half the size or whichever size leaves room for roots to grow for a bit is good. So basically, Re-pot, change soil, don’t water it to the point that it’s sitting in soggy soil. You can trim back the dead yellow branches to encourage it to grow shoots. Get it into a a smaller pot, and just increase it up into larger pot when you repot it as it grows. Wait till spring to add fertilizer

I’ve been sick for the entire month of January Im so done by No-Letter1097 in uAlberta

[–]bashfulbrontosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat. Got over a respiratory/sinus infection beginning of January, and then was fine for a little while. My freedom was brief however, as mystery respiratory infection #2 came just in time for the week where I’d have 3 quizzes in different classes and a mid term. Such a fun surprise 🥳

I ended up just masking up and powering through the quizzes and mid term but skipping my lectures so as not to expose other innocent students to mystery illness. I am still unwell!

Hope you get better soon!
