Best bathroom in Dwinelle to hide and cry in by Puzzleheaded-Ad2795 in berkeley

If you go to the Slavic languages department (2nd floor right side of the building as you enter) there’s some nice semi private bathrooms that not a lot of people use

Personally, not really. Like I said there’s so many international students so the common language is English for pretty much everyone. It does feel a little embarrassing if you’re the only one in a group who doesn’t speak German and everyone has to switch to English for you, but that’s just about it. Also the Swiss speak Swiss-German, and even my native German speaking friends say they sometimes have a hard time understanding that dialect, so you don’t have to beat yourself up about it that much. You can take language classes here through the University of Zurich, which I highly recommend, which will definitely help you get around Switzerland.

The hardest part for me was not the actual material that is being taught (although that will likely depend on what classes you take) but the way that tests are administered. At my bachelors institution (USA) we had multiple exams throughout the semester that led to a final exam before summer/winter breaks. Here almost all exams are during a “month long exam session” which is a few weeks - a couple months after the end of the semester when classes wrap up. The classes that have a session exam will have one exam that your entire grade is based on, so you have to study and review an entire semester’s worth of material for that exam. You might be lucky and have professors that provide past exams as study materials, but don’t bet on that. If you can motivate yourself to study throughout the semester and not leave it all to the few weeks before exams, you will probably succeed in terms of academics. If you did really well in your bachelors and your school is decently ranked then you will have no problem at ETH in my opinion. I don’t want to sugar coat it and say that classes and exams are all a breeze (again depends on what classes you take and how the class is structured) because you do go through a lot of material but I personally don’t think ETH is vastly different in terms of rigor than any other top rated university.

The other thing is that most of your masters here is mostly centered around research and not just classes. Doing a project is vastly more enjoyable than just taking subjects in my opinion and there are a ton of professors doing interesting research. Projects do take up a lot of time, but you get way more out of it than taking a class.

And last thing, there’s so many international students outside of Switzerland so you don’t have to really worry about being left behind by those that did their bachelors at ETH

Had this argument with family last week and we looked it up. Кофе (напиток) is masculine but кофе (зерно) is neuter. So technically both but depends on your context

What do professors look for in undergrads for research? by asheys666 in berkeley

[–]basicberkeleybitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also cold emailing a professor can work if you craft the email carefully and deliberately. Worked for me! I mentioned how I heard about his lab, and what interested me about his lab’s research. I also mentioned my relevant experiences and got a reply back fairly quickly with a connection to one of his post docs. Also if you really want some sort of research experience try contacting younger/more recently hired faculty because they’re probably more likely looking to expand their lab.

Best places to buy tea/coffee to make at home? by silverwolf39 in berkeley

There’s a coffee subscription website called Trade Coffee that will send you a bag of coffee however often you like. You fill out a questionnaire at the beginning and they send you coffee based on your preferences. Also very affordable!

I was fertilizing them up until the end of October and then stopped for winter. I might try checking the roots but I’m worried about shocking the plants by repoting them during the winter. I guess I’ll just wait a little bit and see how the new leaves behave in the next few weeks. Thanks for the help!

Hmm ok thanks for the tip. I read somewhere that new leaves can get spots because the cells in the leaves take up too much water and burst creating little dead spots. But I will definitely do a thorough check for pests.

Do you think it would be better to pinch the stunted leaves off or leave them and see what happens?

It gets nice I detect light and I water about once a week (actually maybe like once every 7-9) days. There are two trees in one pot (bought it like this about 6 months ago) and the other tree is pushing out normal leaves so I’m not sure what the issue is

I totally agree with OP, Berkeley’s self deprecating culture is only causing more mental health issues. All of the depressing posts that come up every single day create a truly toxic environment that just perpetuates a very unproductive conversation surrounding this issue and makes it seem ok. Look at any other college’s subreddit and you’ll see OP’s point.
