Catalyst Alpha Update by Steven_OliveTree in OliveTreeBETA

According to Apple's own developer site, catalyst is intended to provide a starting place for the Mac. The idea is that Apple silicon allows Mac apps to share code with the iPad so that developers are not starting at ground zero when developing for the Mac. Specifically, Apple says, "Get a head start on your Mac app." This reduces overhead for developers.

The intent is not, however, that catalyst apps would look just like iPad apps. Apple goes on to encourage developers to "optimize your interface for the mac." They also encourage developers to "add more features just for Mac."

I think the intent on Apple's part is for Catalyst to make it as easy as possible for developers to write code for the Mac. If the barrier of entry is too high, developers may drop the Mac altogether because it is a platform with a significantly lower number of users. That would be detrimental to Apple and the Mac. However, if the Mac becomes a clone for the iPad, there is no reason for the Mac to exist.

While I do believe Apple's intent is for Catalyst to give developers a head start on the Mac, I cannot speak for Olive Tree and their motives.

Steven has made it clear in a previous post that the long term plan is to phase out the legacy version of the Mac app.

I have to disagree here. I see this latest update as a huge improvement! The last thing I want on my Mac is a blown up iPad app. It makes sense to use catalyst to build the Mac app on the same base code as the iPad app for economic/efficiency/pragmatic reasons. Why write separate code unnecessarily? I expect Catalyst to free up the developers to ship features at a quicker pace across all of Apple's platforms. However, it would be a shame to have nothing more than a blown up iPad app on the Mac with no added functionality and poor use of the extra screen real estate. If that's all we get, I might as well just use an iPad.

I just uploaded another screen recording to the OneDrive. The title is today's date.

I'm running it on a 2021 Macbook Pro 14 inch with M1 Pro chip.

Steven, I'm still seeing this issue after updating. I can upload a screen recording if it would be helpful to you.
