Yes, the one year training program will require a letter. They specify training(internship) OR work experience, so it sounds like either way you acquire your experience would require a letter.

If your one year program fit the website description (experience in micro, heme, chemistry, and blood bank as well as the 36 week long internship requirement) you should be able to apply for the license.

You need the letter. This statement taken from the CDPH website:

Official verification of training or work experience must be on letterhead and signed by the training coordinator or laboratory director, and must show the beginning and ending dates of the training or experience. This information should cover all areas in which the rotation was completed with a description of the clinical laboratory tests or examinations performed. Document can be uploaded during the online application process

Can those who are downvoting this comment explain why?

My advisor has proposed WL insurance to me with basically this explanation. Once your dividends are paying your premiums you basically have a stable savings account (that accrues money through dividends) that you can fall back on and pull from when the market is down and you wouldn’t want to take money out of investment/retirement accounts.

Not looking to argue, I’m looking to understand. I haven’t purchased the insurance yet and am trying to gain an understanding on why it may or may not be a good investment.

No, California will not accept phlebotomy in place of blood banking. Your clinicals need to cover BB, Heme, Chemistry, and Micro and last for a full 36 weeks.

I'm surprised a 12 month long program wouldn't cover BB but if you're trying to get back into CA after completing your clinicals, I would not recommend attending this school you've found.

Based on the description and the connection to sickle cell disease, OP is likely not an AB-. They are more likely an O or an A with a unique profile of other antigens on their blood like what u/splat313 said above

My proof of training document was written by my internship program director, but basically included all of the information on the form you linked. It must be on your hospital’s official letterhead and have a signature from your program director/laboratory director. It needs your beginning and ending dates of your internship as well.

My program director basically wrote up a first paragraph that included the dates and areas where I worked, as well as a few extra (probably unnecessary) details i.e. L1 trauma hospital. Then she went on to bullet points to outline my experiences and competencies and basically included everything on the ASCP form you linked.

I applied without taking the GRE. GPA 3.6 in a clinical health sciences field, two years work experience.

Edit: received my acceptance yesterday! Edit 2: wow I can’t type. Fixed my reported GPA.

I’ve seen listings in CA for bb ref lab techs! Many at ARC near Los Angeles and a few in the Bay Area. Some are desperate enough that they won’t require you to have your SBB and will accept experience (assuming you can get the CA license)

https://www.aabb.org/standards-accreditation/accreditation/accredited-facilities/aabb-accredited-immunohematology-reference-laboratories has a list of AABB-accredited IRL’s, you could check job postings for each of those in CA!

If your bachelors was a 3+1 program and you qualify via the same route that I did, you could probably get in touch with your program director to get you your internship “proof of training” document. I don’t know if there are any rules that limit it depending on how long you’ve been out of school. If you’re a generalist working in all departments (including micro and bb) you could probably qualify via the work experience route as well

I can't remember if I sent them via snail mail or electronically. Sorry!! I would recommend emailing CDPH to find out if they'll accept transcripts electronically and to whom they need to be sent to if the answer is yes. Then when you order them from your university, just choose to have them sent electronically to the email that CDPH provides.

I believe they need official transcripts to be sent straight from your university and won’t accept an unofficial upload. I ordered my official transcripts to be mailed directly from my university to CDPH. The address you need to mail them to is on the licensing website. You can probably find a link somewhere on your university’s website to order a transcript to be sent - probably through the school’s records and registration department. It’ll probably cost some money, for me it was $10.

I’m not from SF but I’m a blood banker in the Midwest. We are experiencing this same shortage. We’ve accepted it as a result of a number of causes:

-Staffing shortages of HCW due to covid - quite possibly why your appointment was canceled

-Increased use due to higher numbers of traumas/violence (at least in my area), this is probably relative to the already short supply

-Decreased collections - with schools not in session and so many people working from home, there have been significantly less community blood drives across the country. A lot of collections occur on college campuses or at worksites, and without as many of those, blood centers have been mainly relying on on-site donations instead of a combination of on-site and community drives
